This was the first time Dimash ever performed on what he calls “the adult stage “. He was the only non Chinese and had to go first to open This 2017 season of The Singer in China. Dimash was invited to compete amongst known, established singers in China. He came in 2nd place. A Chinese woman won the only prize by just 0.10. In my eyes, ears, and heart, Dimash won this competition and the Chinese knew it. Each week he had to learn a new song. Dimash was only 22.6 years old during this competition. He celebrated his 29th birthday on May 24, 2023 and has since The Singer held solo concerts around the world. You are starting at the very beginning of his adult life. SOS is Dimash masterpiece!! SOS is an existentialist song, about ups and downs in life, depression and death, when you feel you don’t belong here. The Singer , it was a Chinese show for highly respected singers to compete, Dimash was the only non Chinese singer invited because the producer saw him perform for the Chinese and Kazakh presidents and was very impressed. He is from Kazakhstan and was the youngest ever competitor in 2017 at only 22 years old. This was his first performance on the show and the audience went wild for him. When the show was broadcast on tv he had to have bodyguards for the first time in his life as he had become a superstar overnight in China. Dimash is a world class artist from Kazakhstan, turned 28 on the 24th of May but touring the world to sell out arenas with his solo concerts, he also performs in concerts with the famous Ukrainian/Russian composer Igor Krutoy, is constantly collecting awards, attends many prestigious red carpet events, film festivals and even models for lots of high end fashion houses. He is university trained in Classical opera vocals to degree level, also holds a degree in contemporary pop music and jazz with a major in vocals, and now has finished his master degree in music composition. He started his doctorate in Musicology.He has been having singing lessons from the age of 5 when his teacher noticed he had perfect pitch . He was offered a place at the Astana Opera in Kazakhstan but respectfully turned it down to pursue his own more contemporary musical career. He is a multi instrumentalist, more than 8 instruments and also sings in 15 different languages and has a range of over 6 octaves from a low bass A2 to a high soprano, plus a whistle register with his highest note so far being a 5 second D8 with vibrato. They speak Kazakh and Russian in Kazakhstan, Dimash speaks both fluently. In The I Am Singer competition the audience are all from the music industry and they are the judges. The people in the green room are the other contestants and their dedicated vocal coaches. The contestants are all famous Chinese singers who are invited to take part. Dimash was the first foreigner to compete. All the contestants had not heard him sing before, this was the first episode of the 2017 season. The competition lasts for 14 weeks.

You couldn't have picked a better video to start with. Perfect. SOS is a song in the rock-opera „Starmania“ from 1978. The first who presented this song was the French singer and songwriter Daniel Balavione. SOS was Dimashs‘ first performance of the China competition (in 2017) and was his first appearance in this show. The Singer is a show in China where only established singers are invited to perform. All the singers invited to this show are already well-known artists in China who have already won awards. Dimash was invited as the first foreigner as a wild card and the youngest in the history of this show. They became aware of him because he had already won some important competitions in Kazakhstan and Belarus, among other countries. He was still completely unknown in China. Actually, it was intended that he would only have 1 or 2 appearances. But it came completely different. When he woke up the next morning after his first performance of SOS he was a megastar in China and even found bodyguards outside his hotel room. SOS’ first video had 600 million views when it aired. He was just 22 years old at the time. Luckily he was able to assert himself in the performance. He can be very stubborn. He listens, but then does what he thinks is right. And afterwards he said that he was really uncomfortable that his father saw him like that🤭. Luckily he didn’t find out until afterwards because I love it when he’s like that on stage🥰. I love this video because he still seemed so innocent. Just a boy and he didn't seem as serious as he sometimes is these days. He still looked carefree. The holdup seems to be finding more levels of corruption above and below ground level that must be cleansed before they get to grab the fruits of all our labours. But I’ve heard that they are so dealt with now that since ‘God’ is in charge, it will not go backwards….maybe after 1000 years of peace and prosperity, another test cycle might go again. STORY: This song (SOS Terrien en distress) is part of Starmania, it's a rock opera, music by Michel Berger (France), lyrics by Luc Plamondon (Quebec, Canada).......two of the best.. .. ... The show was presented for the first time on April 10, 1979 at the Palais des Congrès in Paris. Michel composed especially for the first performer Daniel Balavoine for his special range. Sadly, Daniel died at the age of 33 in 1986 in a helicopter accident during a humanitarian mission in Mali. The second, magnificently interpreted by Grégory Lemarchal, in 2004, he became known to the general public by winning the fourth season of the show Star Academy. Sadly, he died of cystic fibrosis at the age of 23 in 2007. Dimash took over, it was “him” who chose it when he saw Grégory perform it, respect to Dimash for having preserved the linguistic origin of this work. Dimash performs this song phonetically……. In May 2018, Dimash performed at the 71st Cannes Film Festival (France). This was the first time Dimash ever performed on what he calls “the adult stage “. He was the only non Chinese and had to go first to open This 2017 season of The Singer in China. Dimash was invited to compete amongst known, established singers in China. He came in 2nd place. A Chinese woman won the only prize by just 0.10. In my eyes, ears, and heart, Dimash won this competition and the Chinese knew it. Each week he had to learn a new song. Dimash was only 22.6 years old during this competition. He celebrated his 29th birthday on May 24, 2023 and has since The Singer held solo concerts around the world. You are starting at the very beginning of his adult life. The Singer , it was a Chinese show for highly respected singers to compete, Dimash was the only non Chinese singer invited because the producer saw him perform for the Chinese and Kazakh presidents and was very impressed. He is from Kazakhstan and was the youngest ever competitor in 2017 at only 22 years old. This was his first performance on the show and the audience went wild for him. When the show was broadcast on tv he had to have bodyguards for the first time in his life as he had become a superstar overnight in China. Dimash is a world class artist from Kazakhstan, turned 28 on the 24th of May but touring the world to sell out arenas with his solo concerts, he also performs in concerts with the famous Ukrainian/Russian composer Igor Krutoy, is constantly collecting awards, attends many prestigious red carpet events, film festivals and even models for lots of high end fashion houses. He is university trained in Classical opera vocals to degree level, also holds a degree in contemporary pop music and jazz with a major in vocals, and now has finished his master degree in music composition. He started his doctorate in Musicology.He has been having singing lessons from the age of 5 when his teacher noticed he had perfect pitch . He was offered a place at the Astana Opera in Kazakhstan but respectfully turned it down to pursue his own more contemporary musical career. He is a multi instrumentalist, more than 8 instruments and also sings in 15 different languages and has a range of over 6 octaves from a low bass A2 to a high soprano, plus a whistle register with his highest note so far being a 5 second D8 with vibrato. He is widely recognized as the best vocalist in the world. He speaks fluent Kazakh and Russian, is studying English and Mandarin and has conversational skills in both but not quite fluent yet. They speak Kazakh and Russian in Kazakhstan, Dimash speaks both fluently. In The I Am Singer competition the audience are all from the music industry and they are the judges. The people in the green room are the other contestants and their dedicated vocal coaches. The contestants are all famous Chinese singers who are invited to take part. Dimash was the first foreigner to compete. All the contestants had not heard him sing before, this was the first episode of the 2017 season. The competition lasts for 14 weeks.

The beginning discussion about his talent being 'verified' before being invited onto the program is because all competitors are required to already be Established Artists.
This was his first appearance on the show so he was a total unknown, but the audience gave him a very warm welcome and he blew them all away. The morning after this first episode went to air in China, Dimash was stunned to be told he now could go nowhere without personal security, and didn't believe it at first, but he had gained an instant and very devoted fan base of many millions literally overnight. As you observe, this has grown hugely, not only in China, but now internationally as well.
The 'West' has been slow to recognise Dimash, primarily I believe because he explores artistically across EVERY Genre and refuses to stay in the tightly confined and heavily marketed 'genre lanes' that currently exist, but this is changing as the word about his 'gobsmacking talent' spreads.
The Director cuts - to the audience, the other competitors and judges - are also brilliant. Everybody says; "That's ME!" We all feel for the other competitors who upon this one 1st performance must have recognised; "Game OVER!" The thing is, you can see over the course of this 2017 season of this show, with Dimash being not only ridiculously talented, but charming and humble as well, that they transitioned very rapidly into some of his greatest Fans! This song is one of the most difficult songs to sing and made Dimash a mega-star overnight in 2017 (The Singer).
The song comes from the famous Canadian-French rock opera 'Starmania' (1978) and is known in the English-speaking world as Tycoon (1995). Music: Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon (French original text). The English adaptation is by Tim Rice.
That's how it all started: In 2017 Dimash received a wildcard for the “The Singer” competition in China. He was the youngest participant ever (22 years old). Foreign participants were actually forbidden at that time. The director ignored the ban, believing Dimash would only stay 1 or 2 episodes and then go home.
The competition is not a talent show. Only professional, award-winning singers participate. Nobody knew or heard Dimash before and he had to start first ... and after his first song "SOS" Dimash captured the hearts of over 600 million viewers and a mega-star was born overnight. The next day bodyguards were at his door and now he is a superstar but without airs... just our Dimash.
The competition consisted of 14 rounds over 4 months. The jury consisted of 500 spectators who knew music, not just your average "Joe". They were well screened to be sure they would be able to judge the musicians fairly and competently. With up to 1 billion people watching this TV program and international interest was aroused. The performances were uploaded to RUclips ... and so we became Dimash's Dears.
The Chinese organizers planned... but Dimash came, sang and stayed ... for the next 3 years in China ... but he only finished second in the competition because he is not Chinese (conditions have changed: 2018, Jessie J. Won).

SOS is a song in the rock-opera „Starmania“ from 1978. The first who presented this song was the French singer and songwriter Daniel Balavione.
SOS was Dimashs‘ first performance of the China competition (in 2017) and was his first appearance in this show. The Singer is a show in China where only established singers are invited to perform. All the singers invited to this show are already well-known artists in China who have already won awards. Dimash was invited as the first foreigner as a wild card and the youngest in the history of this show. They became aware of him because he had already won some important competitions in Kazakhstan and Belarus, among other countries. He was still completely unknown in China. Actually, it was intended that he would only have 1 or 2 appearances. But it came completely different. When he woke up the next morning after his first performance of SOS he was a megastar in China and even found bodyguards outside his hotel room. SOS’ first video had 600 million views when it aired. He was just 22 years old at the time. Luckily he was able to assert himself in the performance. He can be very stubborn. He listens, but then does what he thinks is right. The other competitiors might not have taken Dimash seriously at first because of his age and that they didn’t know him but that quickly changed after the performance of SOS, as you can see. Through his honest, cheerful and open nature, he found friends very quickly. Contacts that still exist today.

He always thanks his musicians. He is incredibly humble and never acts like a star. When he is praised, he constantly says that it is thanks to his teachers and his parents, who made it all possible for him. He’s just incredible.
Opera2 was the second performance of The Singer competition in 2017 in China. The song is in Russian. A language he also speaks fluently. The original was from the famous Russian singer named Vitas.
If you want to know a little more about Dimash, then I suggest you to watch the video where his father was in the audience. However, Dimash knew nothing about it when he performed. It was a big surprise for him as he saw his father.
I think it was very difficult for him at the beginning. You have to imagine, until this competition in China in 2017 he never was alone. Dimash, like many other Kazakhs, has the tradition of living under one roof with the whole family all together. He lives with his grandparents, parents, a sister, a brother an other relatives in the same house. And now he had to go to China alone, didn‘t know the country, didn‘t know the language, didn‘t know the traditions or livestyle in this country and up to that point he spoke (almost) no English, except maybe „Thank you“ and „My name is Dimash“. Only one interpreter came along and that at the age of 22. He was almost a kid to me then (my son is 20 so I can imagine…). And after that performance he saw his dad. So beautiful and emotional.
BTW the audience is also the jury.
During the Opera 2 performance, he flirted with the audience in a way that wasn’t really his habit at the time (fortunately that has changed in the meantime). And afterwards he said that he was really uncomfortable that his father saw him like that🤭. Luckily he didn’t find out until afterwards because I love it when he’s like that on stage🥰.
I love this video because he still seemed so innocent. Just a boy and he didn't seem as serious as he sometimes is these days. He still looked carefree. I think what's happening today in the world worries him a lot.

Michel composed especially for the first performer Daniel Balavoine for his special range. Sadly, Daniel died at the age of 33 in 1986 in a helicopter accident during a humanitarian mission in Mali.
The second, magnificently interpreted by Grégory Lemarchal, in 2004, he became known to the general public by winning the fourth season of the show Star Academy. Sadly, he died of cystic fibrosis at the age of 23 in 2007.
Dimash took over, it was “him” who chose it when he saw Grégory perform it, respect to Dimash for having preserved the linguistic origin of this work. Dimash performs this song phonetically…….
In May 2018, Dimash performed at the 71st Cannes Film Festival (France). In July, he appeared at Slavic Bazaar 2018 in Vitebsk, Belarus, as a judge and guest artist, and sang "SOS from an Earthling in Distress".
