She clutches the helmet close to her abdomen, the smooth metal cooled by the rain. She looks down at the iron shell that once protected her best friend. They had grown up on different paths; her in royal blood, and him in iron and sweat.
Thunder crashed in the distance as her knights escorted her through the dark lands to the remainder of the kingdom's camps. The warriors around her clenched their iron clad hands around the hilts of massive swords. Blood dripped from cracks in their armor and covered their blades. None of them said a word to her. Were they afraid? She didn't know. They must be, though.
Another THUD came from behind the blanket of darkness ahead of them. The group stopped in their tracks.
The five knights, as if working with one singular mind, moved into a formation in front of her, raising their swords in unison. Their iron boots stomped into the wet ground, steadying each of their stances.
Together, they were and immovable wall, standing stiff as statues, each easily two heads taller than her.
