Your dad created so many wonderful memories for you to look back on. He showed you the power of giving and how good it can feel to make someone else happy. He exemplified the power in making others smile. What a truly amazing thing to have done with his life.
Hey guys! Who's going to see the new Sonic 3 in the theater? Can't wait to take my daughter. I thought now was the perfect time to share this Sonic 3 story. We hoped and prayed Sonic 3 would be released in time for Christmas 1993, but Sega had other plans. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays gamers ;-)
Taking my daughter as well (already got our tickets). She fell in love with Sonic at a young age and if you ask her Sega is her favorite game company. Sonic has once again come full circle in our lives. Merry Christmas.
I have not purchased my ticket yet. It will be just me, myself, and I. Also, I am about to purchase tickets for Dream Theater, so, decisions, decisions.
The delay of Sonic 3 was never going to ruin your Christmas. You got lots of games and Sonic CD was right there 😆 I was 10 years old in 1993. I got Mario Allstars for SNES, a CD HiFi, some CDs and a camera. I was a happy kid.
Love this format! Kinda hope the podcast thing is a separate project from the usual content. I appreciate both, but they don't blend together as nicely for me. Keep up the great work!
nothing to do on Sunday and now I'm watching your videos thank you very much for uploading it even if it's still too early, wish you and your family a merry Christmas❤
@ I still prefer both Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles on Genesis because of the music! Keep going strong with My Retro Life 2025 is gonna be great for gaming because of Metroid Prime 4 I hope you do a video on that! I know I’m jumping ahead but you’re my favorite channel! Hope you and your family have a fantastic Christmas and God Bless!
Iconic game for me too! I remember getting stuck on Carnival Night Act 2 with that one jumping platform. Little did I know at that age all I needed to do was push the up and down buttons!
I got Sonic CD with my Mega CD for the Xmas it was released and I remember being blown away by the cartoon intro, I think I showed it to anyone who visited that Xmas. Good times, I also lost my dad in 2001 RIP our dad's ❤.
I genuinely wonder how many thousands of kids got stuck on the Carnival Night barrel. I know I did. It wasn't until years later, with a little help from GameFAQS, that I was finally able to enjoy the entire game.
Merry Christmas to your family! This video reminded me of a lot of the times I had with my family when I was younger but unfortunately over the years that kinda deteriorated based on life just kinda playing out in the worst ways possible unfortunately leaving me now alone watching these videos appearing these kind of memories from the past myself, even if from a generation of more after these times. I legitimately found your videos earlier today just before this video came out and usually am just a lurker when it comes to watching RUclips videos but I felt like I had to say something here. Thank you so much for showing the internet these wonderful stories/videos from your past!
I can't really have a nice Christmas this year sadly, times are quite tough. however, I just want to say thank you that I can live vicariously through you with these videos. Really is a lovely feeling feeling nostalgic for Christmas times from the past. Have a great one, wishing the best to you and your family!
Sonic was a staple on Christmas mornings in the 90’s , I remember getting the sonic 2 pack in sega genesis in 1994 . So awesome , merry christmas ! I’ve got my games 3 of my kids lined up , youngest is getting a new switch , oldest getting the new series x , I’m probably more excited than they are ! Haha
The delayed launch felt weird when i got it. It clearly should've been the center piece of my Christmas 1993 list. Instead this felt like late added DLC to Christmas 93's haul. A patch, if you will.
That's what I've been saying. People complain about 70 dollar games NOW, but have no idea how good they've got it. Video games have somehow been almost immune from inflation.
I somehow completely overlooked Sonic 3, and had no clue about its connection with Sonic & Knuckles, which I did end up getting. I had Sonic 1 and 2 which I used with the lock-on gimmick, but never had Sonic 3 with it until emulators and ROMs came out, and people figured out that you could literally just stick the ROMs of Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles together and end up with the lock-on thing really working.
Brother, seeing those Sonic games on the chair literally brought tears to my eyes. I had all of those and I remember waiting for Sonic 3 as well. My grandma would buy me the games my parents couldn't afford. Your videos remind me of way back when. Grandma is no longer with us but I'll never forget how she did anything to put a smile on my face. Thanks for triggering happy memories and tears Tyler. Merry Christmas!
Your cousin’s Mike and Manny New York accents really come out during pronunciations so well at that age! It’s always a day when Tyler drops a new video! The Sonic era of gaming is one of the golden age’s so many of us got to actually live through during each installment! I miss those days (simpler times).
Yup for 1992 to 1996 I was getting mostly Sonic stuff. Between the games Sega Genesis with Sonic 2 I was hooked. The stuffed plushies, the Game Gear with Sonic Chaos, Sonic Triple Trouble, Sonic 2. It was Sonic everything back then and the best times for me
I got a Sega Genesis with Sonic 2 for Christmas in 1992. Some time in '93 my parents told me they heard Sonic 3 was coming soon (of which I thought they were making it up lol) but no part of me figured it would be a possible Christmas gift in '93. A few months later I saw it at the Sears my dad worked at and couldn't believe it was real.
Glad I'm not the only one who remembers preordering it and getting the Sonic CD Soundtrack. I think they actually gave it to us early by mistake as it was supposed to be given away upon redemption
Merry Christmas! I wish I could’ve grown up during this time. My first experience with Sonic was on the GameCube funny enough. Sonic 3 is my favorite 2D Sonic and I’m glad he’s still around today
I'm extremely jealous of all the video games you got for Christmas. We simply weren't spoiled as kids and got what we got instead. But man, Hedgehog Day was truly the Christmas Blast for Sonic fans everywhere, and your dad was a true Santa way past the holiday.
Christmas of 1993 was the first time that I owned more than one game console in the same generation, because there was a Sega Genesis model two bundled with sonic the hedgehog two under the tree. It also had a coupon to send off for a free game from a list of games, and I chose Aladdin.
I remember reading about Sonic 3 in Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine and getting so pumped for a Christmas release. I asked my parents for a Genesis 6 button controller instead and a raincheck for Sonic 3 and my parents obliged. Worth the wait, I think.
As I watch this video I turn around and remember that I've got a whole bookshelf filled with all the Sonic games for Genesis, the systems complete in the box, posters etc. Just crazy to see them because it brings me joy. These games were iconic growing up. I used to sit down with my brother and we would play all night until they were finished. I loved the Genesis and the artwork on the boxes was always much cooler than Nintendo. Thanks for the video man.
1998 Christmas for me is one of my most memorable! I got BOTH metal gear solid and resident evil 2, both double cd games for Christmas. What an epic time for gaming!! Love the video as always Tyler, keep up the good work!
So uh.. it wasn't delayed it was meant to come out on groundhog day to tie into the sonic 3 groundhog day promo it was never meant to come out at Xmas It had to be spilt in half back in July to meet this deadline of the sonic 3 promotion at macky D's hence sonic and knuckles exists ..so yes hate to tell ya this Tyler far I know sonic 3 was never meant to done and shipped out in December 93 however..the UK sega mag got a preview of sonic 3 that December the same one that would be shown off by hidden palace on twitch in December 2019 the Nov 3rd 1993 prototype which has alot of buggy audio you can tell they were scrambling to finish 3 by Feb in time for the groundhog day promotion so yeah. Sorry Tyler I know alot bout sonic 3 figured I'd give ya more info it was never coming out in December of 93 The prototype also uses the pc music! Which means this is infact the fixed non mj ost it sounds better than the pc vers with the mega drive soundchip Thr final uses mj's tracks the reason for this is unknown But i wouldnt have it any other way from the stranger in moscow basis track for the credits to hard times by the jetzons for ice cap ty to brad buxer and mj for those honestly!
Thanks for the info! I was merely basing the story off of what we thought and felt back in 1993. We assumed Sonic 3 was coming like Sonic 2 the year before. Also, I did find this quote from STI programmer Peter Moraweic, "Sonic Spinball was intended as a stop-gap product when it became clear that Naka wouldn’t be able to deliver Sonic 3 for Christmas." Somehow we knew this bit of info even back in the day. I'm not sure where Dad read it.
@@MyRetroLife huh..i actualy didnt know that I did know sonic spinball was meant to be a shoe in for sonic 3 for the holiday season but not much more than that.. I'm kinda surprised sega UK somehow got ahold on the 1993 prototype to show off the UK viewers of the mag and yet sega visions didn't get ahold of it either to show it off to yall will never cease to confuse me yall should of seen it too! on the note of the 1993 prototype there is Map data for Lava reef zone act 2(which is very different from the final) that was added back in via a code and some editing of the from to give it the colosuion data of the final game making it very buggy but viewable.. the level select code shows off other locations too but all of it is dummied out so only the music could be heard and you have to activate the debug code to avoid dying of falling to your death...again showing how unifinshed the game was in early nov 1993
oh man, ill never forget watching sonic CDs intro for the first time - it must have been around 1996 (new Zealand was always pretty slow getting new consoles/games from memory- plus my family were on a pretty tight budget) But that intro in that moment made me a sonic fan for life
Sonic 3 is such a gem. Although I had catching up to do in 2004, it really left an impression, even if I was quite late to the party. The OST was masterfully made, from MJ's Launch Base Zone, to MJ-inspired Ice Cap Zone, and Death Egg Zone that sounds like Sonic is running at lightning speed, just listening to it. Though I needed a Game Genie to get through Death Egg, it is such a masterpiece, and Sega nailed it.
I didn’t have a Sega Genesis growing up, my next-door neighbor did. I had a super Nintendo and was very much Mario and Nintendo fan. But even I couldn’t escape the sonic mania at the time. Sonic the hedgehog three and sonic and knuckles were monumentally, huge games and even the promotion behind those games was just as big. For instance, I still remember collecting the sonic the hedgehog three happy meal toys at McDonald’s and even to this day I still have a few of them.
So many comments saying how your dad was a good dude. And I'm making another. I've said it before but there's no reason not to say it again. He was a cool, kind dude who loved you with all his heart. As always thank you for sharing him and his legacy with us. RIP your dad. One kickass guy.
I was born in 86, so in 1993 I was still mostly into mascot character type games, so Sonic and Mario were always my preferred games to play. It was Sonic 3 or nothin at that point, but I loved Shinobi 3 shortly after.
I mean it worked out for the better really! Instead of getting Sonic 3 you got four other games, and Sonic 3 later on a non holiday. That sounds like a win. I'm not sure how it would have worked out if the game had been released before Christmas, but I think the wait paid off. Loved the video, very heartwarming stories.
The Christmas of 1993 was the Christmas that I got the Phillips CD-I. I remember getting a bunch of Demo discs that Circuit City gave my parents when they bought the CD-I. Mystic Midway, Lords of the Rising Sun, and Tennis. I also got Escape from Cyber City, and the now infamous, Link The Faces of Evil.
I definitely remember Christmas of 1993. I got Super Empire Strikes Back for my SNES, then went to my neighbors to see if they got any Genesis games and we all kinda felt underwhelmed by Sonic Spinball being the stop gap Sonic game to fill in for the Sonic 3 delay.
Wow man I really enjoyed this. I had my own Sonic Christmas back in 1994 when I finally got my own Sega Genesis console along with Sonic 2, Sonic 3 , and Sonic & Knuckles I felt like the happiest 16 year old on the planet that day. Not only that (for me at least) to add the cherry on top of my Sega Sundae the next day with some cash I got for Xmas my mom took me to Kay-Bee toys and I purchased Contra : Hard Corps which was one of the two main reasons why I wanted my Genesis console so badly by mid 1994. Number one is because it was the most popular console during my high school years and number 2 I was a huge fan of Konami ( before they went downhill) and was eager to see what they produced for Sega Genesis.
Amazing amazing amazing feeling this vídeos gave me... I'm from Brazil but the feeling I had when I was a kid was just the same. Thank you and have agreat xmas
Despite being an avid gamer by the end of 1993, I wasn’t upset to not get Sonic 3 for Christmas, in fact I didn’t even know Sonic 3 was on the way in the first place! I did start reading game magazines by this point and my brother and I were both avid readers of the then-new Sonic The Comic (NOT the Archie Sonic comic that was sold in the US) but I definitely didn’t hear ANYTHING about Sonic 3 until we were just about to get a copy! I didn’t get any games for any systems until Christmas 94 when I received Micro Machines 2! My main present for Christmas 93? A Hornby Thomas The Tank Engine set! Yes Hornby’s models didn’t mimic the actual Thomas character designs as well as Bachmann’s did (I didn’t even know about Bachmann until years later) but I was still very pleased with what I got! I did however receive a Game Boy game 2 days before Christmas 93: Dropzone, a Defender clone that first saw the light of day on the Commodore 64! It’s a great game, play it if you haven’t already! If I were a parent or uncle in 1993 and my kid, nephew and/or niece wanted Sonic 3 for Christmas that year and had a Mega Drive but never owned a Master System, I would’ve gotten him or her Sonic Chaos and (if he or she didn’t already have one) a Master System adaptor! I do however like to wonder what kind of game Sonic 3 would’ve been if McDonald’s weren’t as desperate to do a Sonic 3 Happy Meal tie in? You want to hear about a bad Christmas? Christmas 2005: 2 days prior my Xbox 360 started suffering from the Red Ring of Death! Under the tree for me that year was Project Gotham Racing 3 but I could only play it for a few minutes before the Red Ring of Death cut me off again! To make matters worse, my parents, desperate to try and get me to be more like other adults, spiked my orange juice with champagne! They added a tiny bit of champagne to my OJ thinking I wouldn’t notice, but after I had 1 sip, I could EASILY taste the champagne! I interrogated them, they admitted to the crime, and I got at them for spiking my drink! When school started again shortly into January, I actually went as far as to tell my teacher and classmates that my parents spiked my OJ! I do NOT drink alcohol and my parents did a few times before this tell me “Come on, drink some champagne!”, NOT taking no for an answer! Way to waste my time doing something I was OBVIOUSLY going to say no to! Madness is pulling the SAME dick move more than once thinking you’d get different results!
Not Sonic related but I remember when Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze for Wii U was supposed to come out in the holiday season from 2013. My grandmother preordered the game and it said it would come in February. We didn’t know why until I looked it up and that’s when I found out that it was delayed until February 21, 2014. I wasn’t too happy about it because it felt like a long time from then. I love the game now though and it was worth the wait.
I never got to experience Sonic games as a kid for Christmas. Back then, I was strictly a Nintendo kid up until 1998 when I got a PlayStation. Nowadays, I kind of make up for it by getting Sega games on Nintendo (we all never thought that be a reality). I just recently got Sonic X Shadow Generations on Black November and having a real blast with that one.
As a kid, I only had Nintendo. Never had Sega, even though I really wanted one to play Sonic. I only got to play Sonic when over at friends houses. Sonic 2 is still my favorite Sonic game followed by Sonic Mania. I didn't get to really deep dive those early Sonic games until I bought them on the Virtual Console for the Wii in the mid to late 2000's. I did really like that early 90's Sonic cartoon. The good one. Even though I never had a sonic game as a kid, I still have a ton of nostalgia as Sonic was everywhere in the early 90's regardless if you had a Sega console or not.
I got mortal Kombat 2 and secret of mana on Christmas Day. When January came around, I received Sonic the hedgehog 3 and it was a Friday when I got home from school.
Use code 50RETROLIFE to get 50% OFF plus free shipping on your first Factor box at bit.ly/4ftdWwy!
I got sonic 2 and toy story and a few other ones even mortal kombat but never 3 for some reason by then I was onto gauntlet legends for 64. lol

Which means this is infact the fixed non mj ost it sounds better than the pc vers with the mega drive soundchip
Thr final uses mj's tracks the reason for this is unknown
But i wouldnt have it any other way from the stranger in moscow basis track for the credits to hard times by the jetzons for ice cap ty to brad buxer and mj for those honestly!
I'm kinda surprised sega UK somehow got ahold on the 1993 prototype to show off the UK viewers of the mag and yet sega visions didn't get ahold of it either to show it off to yall will never cease to confuse me yall should of seen it too!
on the note of the 1993 prototype there is Map data for Lava reef zone act 2(which is very different from the final) that was added back in via a code and some editing of the from to give it the colosuion data of the final game making it very buggy but viewable..
the level select code shows off other locations too but all of it is dummied out so only the music could be heard and you have to activate the debug code to avoid dying of falling to your death...again showing how unifinshed the game was in early nov 1993
oh man, ill never forget watching sonic CDs intro for the first time - it must have been around 1996 (new Zealand was always pretty slow getting new consoles/games from memory- plus my family were on a pretty tight budget)
But that intro in that moment made me a sonic fan for life
LOL Sonic 3 was my Birthday gift in 1994. I only had to wait 5 days after the game's release lol
When people ask me what my favorite retro game is, I always say sonic 3
Sonic 3 is such a gem. Although I had catching up to do in 2004, it really left an impression, even if I was quite late to the party. The OST was masterfully made, from MJ's Launch Base Zone, to MJ-inspired Ice Cap Zone, and Death Egg Zone that sounds like Sonic is running at lightning speed, just listening to it. Though I needed a Game Genie to get through Death Egg, it is such a masterpiece, and Sega nailed it.
Sonic 2 was the first game I've ever played and owned that got me into gaming!
This is back when your Dad was alive, such memories you have😁
If a company was in that position today, they'd release unfinished without a care and patch it later... Still ruining kids Christmases.
And people complained about games reaching 70 bucks this generation. Sonic 3 was 69.99 in 1994. That's wild
Another great memory shared. Merry Christmas to all.
I remember seeing that anime intro for Sonic CD for the very first time and was immediately felt validated in spending all that money for the Sega CD
Had this on release day. Sonic Spinball is a consolation prize lol
I've never seen a kid walk down stairs slower on Christmas morning in my life.🤣🤣
Indian style butter chicken
Sonic 3&knuckles is the greatest sonic game ever made for the sega genesis ❤
Cant wait for your daughter to open her present this Christmas
Member berries picked at the peak of freshness every time.
i fuckin love this channel...i grew up close to this, not as many video games but i had my own version of a awesome, privileged childhood
Imagine waiting over ONE year for a new video game.
And now we are going to watch the Sonic 3 Movie.
Oh poor you - Try having your parents deny you the Nintendo World Championships!
Past & present, I always thought Sonic Spinball was 💩
