J.C. just wanted to tell you thank you for this video. I am a mechanic in the marine field and very mechanically incline. This video saved my butt. I refused to figure this out with any help. Until I exhausted all my trouble shooting. I am not a diesel mechanic, but I an almost figure it all out. I am not to familiar with this truck. I bought this truck 3 years ago. its a 2001 4700 international with a dt446e. This video was very helpful and wanted to personally thank you for your video. I am officially a youtube mechanic for 7.3 diesel thanks to you. lol
I work on electrical problems on cars at work. It's my favorite part of being a mechanic. You really aced that electrical problem. So many people have such a difficult time with electrical. It can be learned but it takes someone really dedicated to wanting to learn to get it figured out. I work on automobiles and there is no lack of electrical faults. I see a lot of issues of wires breaking inside if the insulation and that requires a pull test to find. You taught me something tonight, I can totally understand the difference between car engine harnesses and truck harnesses but I never even considered insulation breaking down from rubbing on the loom. I guess that's what you get when a truck engine runs 8+ hours a day and a car engine maybe runs 2. Great video! I enjoyed it - thank you.
The green crusties are usually the root of most electrical problems. When I was working, one of our Macks quit running on the interstate. After checking for a while, we had it towed back to the shop. After running down the problem, we found that the seal on the ECM was twisted when put together at the factory. After 2 or 3 years of winter snow plowing and treating the crusties had eaten the majority of the pins on the computer and connector. Looked at repinning the harness, but because of the way the harness was made and run, there wasn't enough wire to make it to the ECM. The only solution was a new harness and ECM and atrip to the dealer to have the ECM programmed.
Dang! That cost a bunch and no way around it. I had a truck which got struck by lightning, of all things! It fried the ECM and every sensor as well as melting wire in various places. I was out about 4 grand and we did a lot of the work ourselves.
Intertrash I swear it's the cheapest junkiest truck on the road. Navistar got sued almost into bankruptcy over there motors. You are the man to even mess with it. RESPECT

This video gave me the confidence I need to track down why my ecm doesn't get power, I can't find a correct wire diagram for my bus, but it is very similar to your rig so this was ever so helpful, I'm working on my first bus and the amount of wires is pretty intimidating

Good job fixing it the right way. Wish I could find someone that was half as good as you to higher in the shop.
Great fix J.C. From finding the initial problem to tracing it down to a tiny little cut in that single wire. It’s truly surprising to me that the wiring harness loom could stop a truck dead in its tracks just from simple engine vibration over 20 years. Also looks like you caught it just in time too before it frayed even more wires in the harness as well. 👍
I'll never remember what all you've taught... but it teaches me what to look for when hiring the next mechanic for my business... attention to detail and tenacity to make it right
You have a really good approach on troubleshooting. Great use of a schematic. Knowledge on how a circuit works. Great knowledge on actually testing the integrity of a circuit. The use of a light for a load. I use a light myself or a 12 volt buzzer/ horn. Great video. Thank you for sharing....
Your efforts in the electrical diagnosis warms my heart. There is alway a solution to the riddle if one has the patience, the knowledge and a procedure. Nicely done! I find that a “Power Probe” connected to the vehicles battery ensures that I have a known good power/ground source. I have chased my tail with what I thought was a good ground. Thanks!

I like the light bulb trick. I had a VW Passat, that was a no start, no fuel pump, but I got 12v at the plug at the tank, it puzzled me for days, until I took a 20w kitchen halogen puck light and used as a test light, I found that the fuse was blown, but my volt meter did not know that.
Thanks for the video I really enjoyed it. Never had thought about using a light to check the load. I've always just checked for continuity with a ohms meter. Awesome video for me.
I got a 95. What I did was I improved all my grounds, took them loose and ground the frame and put them back. Putting all new sensors and kept the other ones for spares and she fired right up and ran. Still been running good
J.C. When you retire you can go on the road with your comedy act, you can open up with Belt Dressing! 🤣😂🤣 Great video, I know your supper busy, so I’ll be glad to see a video when you have the time.
Good evening, my dear friend. I am from Iraq and I work as an international car mechanic. I made a device of my own making to start the engine without a wheel
Exactly... high impedance test showing voltage does not equal current carrying capability. Similar, but conversely, is how a bad battery terminal can sometimes start a vehicle, but then loose connection and not recharge the battery. I've tried explaining that one several times to people, but end up just having to do the work for them to prove it. Do you have a "toner" a.k.a. fox&hound set? I've used that a few times trying to figure out where a wire is broken. Doesn't always work perfectly (won't show break if it's simply high resistance), but it's another good tool for the bag. Also helpful for mapping wires when there's nothing to distinguish them from another. Thanks for the video and excellent explanation!
Chafing...water..corrosion... WORK AROUND REPAIRS... when you fix em...understand the removal of the bad repair -- learning all the time. .! Well well well.... tests indicated other rely were well fed , and operational...instructs from cpu were part of avlogic"safety/lockout tree....
I really enjoy your videos and you are very knowledgeable with International trucks. I'm working on a 2001 International T444E Dump truck with electronic auto trans. I have a no start issue using the ignition switch. I have either no power or no ground going to trans shifter. I also have no source power at start relay on dash. It click when key turned but no main power. Could be a ground issue. Possibly none to ecm? With a remote starter button hooked on starter the truck starts and runs. But the electronic controlled shifter and transmission won't do anything. In your video you put a piece of mig wire in the back side of the ecm plug. How do I get the bolt out of the plug and the back cover off of the ecm PLUG? Any help is greatly appreciated.
ecm doesnt supply power to relays. it controls them. always start with basics. power and grounds at the batteries. then at the engine and starter. branch off from there. continue until you have checked them to each and every destination. verify you "wait to start" and "engine warn" lights operate. once you have verified these things, you can start to look at what is or is not happening. electrical diagnosing can be difficult if there isnt any direction or procedure. if you think of it like this, it might be easier. "what does the ecm and trans have while sitting and not running? what does it take for the ecm and trans to turn on? what does the ecm and trans have to see to crank?" then move forward. ecm and trans need power and grounds at all times. they need an key on signal to "wake up". if you have that at both, now look for do they have a "crank signal" from the key. once you verify that, now you look for what the ecm needs to have before it enables the crank prohibit to let voltage go to the starter. the ecm must see "neutral" or "park" signal from the trans. your automatic trans controller and shifter must be working properly for it to send the needed signal to the ecm crank enable. that is where i would start.
I have the same truck same transmission , yes i have had wiring problems in same front part of harness . i had a 10 amp fuse problem for years brake and shift interlock circuit . no pattern to problem . found it, neutral switch pigtail rubbing on shift linkage . hardest to find and easiest to fix.

hi sir, interesting videos. im having trouble removing the harness connector. the plastic tab spins but won't come off. I removed the small Phillip screw but no luck. any idea as to how to take it off. thanks
i find it is easier to let them tell me their lies. as long as i let them go, they usually will tell all the bad things about the truck....in their "own way." i just have to be sharp enough to distinguish between "reality" and "their fabricated reality."
The weight of all those wires resting on an enclosed loom plus the vibration plus the hot and cold cycles was enough to rub through wire insulation and allow contaminant ingress. These are the kind of real word issues that usually lead to changes in build processes.
I had a Oshkosh front discharge mixer that kept blowing fuses for the instrument cluster. Traced it down to on wire on the body harness . Replaced the wire taped the harness up and reinstalled the harness. It only took 3 days but we got it fixed 🤣🤣🤣
good hunch on the 2nd problem JC. saved yourself the hassle of chasing a 'problem' that wasnt actually there. troubleshooting is becoming a lost art. easier to just hack something get vehicle out the door let the next guy figure wtf is all this hackery doing
What is the buzzing sound in the background when ignition switch it turned to on before cranking over ? I got a 1994 4600LP & I got crank no start and the buzzing sound is now gone. I was thinking of changing my icp and ipr
You have a link to that wire schematic? I have a similar problem. No power signal to the start relay on the firewall. I've been looking around and found so many wires stab tested and now corroding it's disgusting. With ignition on I can jump the pins on the firewall and it all starts/runs great. No power coming out of firewall bulkhead connection but back probed ignition switch and is good.
No need, found my problem. Between ignition switch and crank relay wire 17 and 17C I had a body builder starter interrupt circuit installed but not used anymore. Found wiring fault. Bypassed body builder interrupt and unit starts fine.
I'm so glad I found your channel, at least I have something to go on . You have a new subscriber and I do have a International but its a Bus so that being said I m hoping to get mine running again. So thanks for sharing your videos from Mobile, Alabama .

Great video and diagnoses. I really could use your help if you would be so kind and inclined. I'm working on a 2001 International 4300 dt466. Its a little different than yours. I changed the batteries yesterday and now I have a crank no start. Im not a diesel mechanic but I have a few years with the gas burners. I can't find a wiring diagram that matches the truck Im working on or even a fuse box legend. Do you have a link to find a diagram? Everything I find on google is not close. I would like to check my powers and grounds at the idm relay but its not in the fuse box labeled. Also I hear no clicking under the hood with the key on. This is not a all the time thing of working on diesels. Im just trying to get my but out of a crack. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. thanks for your time.
Bought a 2001 International 444e school bus and someone ripped all the wiring including fuse blocks out of the bus. Can you help me is there a way to start the bus with wiring removed from the inside of the bus? Im will to pay you as you are absolutely excellent at troubleshooting. IM in the DFW Texas area.
get a wiring schematic from the international dealer or the bus dealer. it will outline the power and grounds you need as well as the throttle pedal inputs.
Is this a good motor to have? Im looking at a 2001 international 4900 26ft box with the 6+ manual transmission.. Under 200k on the motor... Any input about this combination would be greatly appreciated please and thank you😎
i am always cautious when someone say xxx miles "on the motor". it is usually followed by "i dont have paperwork on the engine", or "engine only had 40k miles" "the chassis has 500k" or more miles. i have not run into a 4900 series with a t444e. most times they are dt466 or larger. i like the trans. some do, some dont. i have owned many. i would put a scanner on it and see what the ecm miles and hours are before i would consider it. those clusters are notorious for not working.
Awesome job JC, I have a 2001 Freightliner chassis with a Blue Bird body on top doing the same thing. Where do I get a wiring schematic, Freightliner or Blue Bird or both? I love your channel because I'm always learning something. Thanks! Silvermint.
Fyi, your ohm meter sends a known current or voltage through the load, then measures the voltage or current across and through the load for you to readout resistance or ohms. You are in fact putting power through load when you use an ohm meter. Ideally, resistance value should be checked on isolated loads.
@j.c.smithprojects agreed--great use of the 1156 bulb. Most electronics will be immune to the low current resistance measurements from a dmm. Made the statement for anyone who is curious how "horseshoe" mode works.
I have a problem with my international 99 won’t show my wait to start light of seems like my pcm has no power or ground I could start it from relay but won’t turn on () oNly over

I really think International has the worst wiring in the business. They just can't figure it out.
i think freightliner is one of the worst. at least the circuit numbers are still on internationals.
I'm beginning to find that out. At least my truck is paid for.
I need help with this i got no crank-and transmission seems stuck in gear. Ran fine and shifted fine before now
so was the dash on this not lighting up/turning on as well? ive got an issue where on the same system im not getting crank or power to the dash
Profesional job 👍
Questions where can I get a print out like the one you're using. I've gone to International Truck and of course they look at me , like really ! But that's OK I'm not giving up. So thanks for sharing your videos from Mobile, Alabama .
what year is your bus and what engine is it? i can see if i can a wiring schematic
@@j.c.smithprojects Hey there, how ya doing , good I hope . I have the info for you ! 1997 International Bus/ 7.3 T444E . Oh please if you can help me out I'd would appreciate so so much ! I want to learn how to fix a problem with I'm out on the road. I don't really want to put my phone number out here , is there anyway you can reach out to you ? I have a Gmail address. What ever you need me to do . I just want to get her running ! Ok thank you so much from Mobile, Alabama
Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. thanks for your time.
look in the battery box for missed ecm power and grounds. may have left one off when you changed the batteries.
@@j.c.smithprojects Thank you Sir. Will do!
Where did you get the wiring diagrams from?
You're freaken awesome!!! Wish you could fix my 🚚 😆
Awesome job brother
We have a 1997 with a 466E crank no start, could you tell me where you find the electrical schematic you printed? Thank You
INTERNATIONAL DEALER
Bought a 2001 International 444e school bus and someone ripped all the wiring including fuse blocks out of the bus. Can you help me is there a way to start the bus with wiring removed from the inside of the bus? Im will to pay you as you are absolutely excellent at troubleshooting. IM in the DFW Texas area.
get a wiring schematic from the international dealer or the bus dealer. it will outline the power and grounds you need as well as the throttle pedal inputs.
@@j.c.smithprojects Thanks JC
I have a similar problem a crank no start...can we connect I need help?
You make it look so easy...
this was an easy repair. all in it was just a couple hours work.
Key words, "can it carry current?".
Jc Ever use for conformal coatings for moisture control
no i have not.
I had an old Chevy truck that had a rear main "belt dressing" leak.
built in belt dressing. it is a rare option. only available on trucks with "special" owners.
@@j.c.smithprojects actually just click ony youtube page.. I just uploaded a video of the truck and motor pleaseeee
Awesome job JC, I have a 2001 Freightliner chassis with a Blue Bird body on top doing the same thing. Where do I get a wiring schematic, Freightliner or Blue Bird or both? I love your channel because I'm always learning something. Thanks! Silvermint.
chassis schematic from freightliner. body schematic from bluebird.
Fyi, your ohm meter sends a known current or voltage through the load, then measures the voltage or current across and through the load for you to readout resistance or ohms. You are in fact putting power through load when you use an ohm meter. Ideally, resistance value should be checked on isolated loads.
your meter is not putting enough load through the wire to be sure it can handle the entire load it is meant to carry.
@j.c.smithprojects agreed--great use of the 1156 bulb. Most electronics will be immune to the low current resistance measurements from a dmm. Made the statement for anyone who is curious how "horseshoe" mode works.
Great job!
Where do you get the schematics?
If i buy a truck it will be from u i love u detail to fix the problem
I have a problem with my international 99 won’t show my wait to start light of seems like my pcm has no power or ground I could start it from relay but won’t turn on () oNly over

i dont know if your going to see this message. but where did you get the wire diragram from. i have a 1996 4700 with a 7.3 diesel and i have the same issue. but im getting 5 volt on 97 ah ..
Got it from my international dealer.
