This was only attributed to Turlough O Carolan (whose music I love) but was actually written by a 17th century Irish Harper called William Connellan. Molly MacAlpin was is original title.
Very nice but, this isn't thought to have been written by Carolan, though it was said to be the tune he most wished he'd written. It is a setting of Molly McAlpine which is genrally credited to either Thomas or William Connellan.
Dear Sir, Thank you for this so much pleasure ! Fortunately, I now know where the loop button is on RUclips ! Is this wonderful piece playable on a 8 course Renaissance lute tuned D F G C F A D G ? My 13 year old princess would love it ! She's the player (I am only the tuner !!!). Do you know where I could find an affordable tablature for it ? Indeed, I may not be able to find it just by watching the video... Thanks again for sharing this music with us, it is an invaluable gift !
That was beautiful! I was wondering if you have any sheet music/tabs for this arrangement? And can I ask what the tuning is on the baroque lute? I want to arrange this piece for classical button accordion and I was going to base the harmonies off this version as they really resonate with me 😁 love from Ireland ❤
Thanks! but sorry, it's in baroque lute tablature which I don't think would do you any good because of the strange tuning - also the lute is tuned to A 415 rather than A 440 tuning is from high to low is fdafdagfedc
I have to ask: do you keep the standard D minor baroque tuning for the huge diversity of music you play, or do you retune based on the style? (ex: the Irish music here as opposed to baroque songs)
I love this song and play it on irish harp. But,it's not written by O'Carolan. It's by William Connelan. On hearing the beauty of this song, O'Carolan said "It's so beautiful, I should have written this"
@@mandarinlearner As a pedal harpist, I heard this story too. Since Carolan was blind he was able to play a song after hearing it once. Inspirational for a harpist!
What an amazing instrument played by a great musician
Thank you Jao ...I'm still new to the baroque lute, but I think I've fallen in love with it.
And a great tune!!
I think you capture quite well the soul of this song. Very well done
Thanks Andoni!
Ahhh, so very lovely. I'm glad that this popped up in my recommendations. I'm always happy to hear some O'Carolan.
Thanks for listening

OK - thanks for setting us straight - so many people think it was originally a Led Zeppelin tune...something about a stairway
A most beautiful piece played supremely.
Ru - thank You!

Thanks! unfortunately the tuning for the baroque lute is very different than the renaissance lute,
so the tablature I used is worthless
@@danbluedeer Thank you for your answer ! Too bad, my daughter will wait to play the baroque lute ;-) !

@@danbluedeer thank you! Could I see the tablature anyway? I'm interested in how it's written with that many strings😀
@@o.omalley I stopped giving out scores several months ago - too many requests, too little time but I'll send it to you if you give email address

I tune the lower courses to whatever the music calls for...the more open bass strings the better!
When was this written? 5 years ago? Five centuries ago?
O'Carolan lived 1670-1738 ..so this was written somewhere in between those dates.

Huh, I hadn't heard that one...
@@danbluedeer Kind of a known story among many Irish harpers. That's why it's called his dream as he wishes he had written it :)

Stairway to Heaven (Led Zeppelin)???
There do seem to be some common elements. We all borrow and rearrange musical ideas of the past - that's how music permeates our consciousness.
If you can’t come up with ideas, Nick them from classical sources, no copyright
Wow, so Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" is a cover from this masterpiece!?!?! Or coincidence...
at any rate, Page and Plant never had copyright infringement issues.
O' Carolan died in the 1730's, so I don't think any old timers from Ireland lived to hear Page's & Plant's version... regardless my Bic was on too!
Are you high???🤦🏻♂️
I think Led Zeppelin must have been inspired by this song when they wrote Stairway to Heaven
you may be right about that...
Led Zeppelin jajaja
Zepplin may have nicked a few notes when they wrote Stairway
