    nicely designed product Dave. I'd like to suggest making a similar pan but out of plain carbon steel. they also are called blue steel. they need to be maintained like cast iron but are much lighter. they are more non stick than teflon if taken care of. most of the professional cooks I've worked with prefer blue steel over anything else. I carry a 10 inch blue steel pan into the woods. it'd be nice to have one with a folding handle.

    Looks like just what I've been looking for. Everyone that I've seen so far has been thin sheet metal that will have hot and cold spots. This Pathfinder skillet looks like it will heat and cook evenly - looks like a winner to me.

    Hi Dave, here in Australia I have 1. I like that the pan is heavier than the handle so it wont tip over on my Solo Lite stove. They are a good combination. Your tips coating the pan & not overheating it was very helpful advice & much appreciated. Yes I do love my Pathfinder Skillet with lid. Best on the market. Great design & construction.

    Brilliant.
    If you can master the art of seasoning a pan, you will have pans that work for life. No more teflon, no more pans that "wear out". When they get too crusty just sand them down with very fine emery paper, and re-season them. Im trying to do this with aluminium with zero success.

  • @BorealWoodsrunner
    @BorealWoodsrunner 8 лет назад +8

    I use flaxseed oil and repeat the process 11-12 times but use less oil only enough to coat the pan...was taught this way by my culinary arts teacher.......mainly so we would stop burning all the eggs and we're able to serve lunch right lol

    Dave, I wanted to wait till the video ended to see that I’m not missing anything and I’m glad I did because when you said fifteen bucks I said “ahha”…
    The price is great.
    You probably don’t even remember but I’ve been a subscriber since 2008. Back then you were unknown. I remember you had a video where you handmade arrow cases and tried to sell them for pennies through YT and you barely had 200 subscribers (that's 200, not 200 thousand!).
    Sure come a long way!
    I’m just not a massive comment maker since most often it’ll only open the door to trolls.
    What I wanted to say is that for many years I neglected to buy anything from Titanium because of the price but lately (planning a backpacking trip in Scotland) I finally bought a pot and silverware from titanium and to be honest I doubt I’ll ever go back to stainless steel. It’s just really hard to beat the weight difference. For the same weight as my very small MSR pot I can now have a bigger pot, frying pan, lid and two sets of forks, spoons and knives and honestly it may still weigh less.
    My question then is how come you don’t make more products from titanium?
    If I’m honest since I moved to England it wouldn’t be as easy for me to buy your products due to the shipping involved but nonetheless my question is still valid.
    Is it a question of not liking titanium or is it a question of cost?

    • @DavidCanterbury
      @DavidCanterbury  8 лет назад +5

      IMHO the heat retention of TI is not near as good, the Material is less durable using camp fires over time and the cost is always at least 3 times that of stainless, to me the weight differential would only be worth it for short term use or Long distance packing over shorter durations. I have several warped pieces of TI from camp fire use now-

    • @BravingTheOutDoors
      @BravingTheOutDoors 8 лет назад

      Good info.
      You just really have to do something about the shipping fees.
      It says 50$ to ship it to England!
      Appreciate your reply.

  • @ManLand

    absolutely right I had this treatment on my channel for a while now and one tip I always like to share is never heat the pan up to a higher temperature that what you treated it at...and thru continued use just repeat the process as needed because we all know that a good ole campfire does not have a temperature control...lol. it a learned practice to regulate that temperature. I am excited about that skillet...and am headed that way to check it out....this could be the answer to my 2 light weight stainless steel versions...very thin but kinda feeble...lol.

    @cmcclellan9721 7 лет назад

    Folks, let me tell ya, I bought this because of the price mainly but was a litle skeptical of the "substantial" part. I'm happy to say he UNDERSTATED it! I looked and looked EVERYWHERE and you guaranteed will not beat this anywhere on continental USA! Follow the instructions exactly as he says on seasoning it and it works great. ONE THING THO, do not use even plastic spatulas ONLY WOOD! I was surprised but using a plastic spatula made my next eggs and sausage breakfast stick and I had to "re-season" it again. You cannot go wrong with this.
    UPDATE: Found out why it stuck using Plastic! Wasn't the plastic. I cooked directly on the coals that time instead of the grate I normally use. It happened again when I cooked on the coals directly. STILL the best deal you can get. Re-seasoned a second time and used grate consistently and never happened again.

    While waiting on your skillet I did a lot of research on how to cook in it. This guy's experiment is really well done and what he basically says in the end is: Seasoning/applying a film to a stainless steel skillet basically has a very low effect. Now I'm confused because you have so much experience with cooking. I'm really looking forward to seeing what my experiences will be :) It arrived yesterday and the quality is very good!

    Dave the best nonstick ing treatment oil for any cooking surface is to always use "flakseed"oil. heat treat it like you did here...whether it's cast iron or other stainless steel pans. same cooking methods applies. but the finish the natural patina it takes on is a shine darkened black like tarnish an wood utensils used always will definitely be non stick patina for as long as one keeps it in good cooking practice for sure. What's the width an depth of this skillet? if you would care to letting me know,I definitely would appreciate it. it looks high quality,it does.

Good job on the fry pan and price Dave, I did some checking and no folding fry pans come even close, they start at $24 and go up and not made as well as the PF fry pan.
