    Alan, can you please do a video about the rift that has developed between SS and barbell medicine (Rip vs Feigenbaum)? I don't think anybody wants to ask you to pick a side or anything like that, but if you could discuss the differences in programming ideologies and offer your own thoughts about what was discussed in the article that sparked this whole thing, I think it would help a lot of people make sense of the situation?

      i know this is an old post, but, they talk about it a bit on the Barbell medicine website. They have more in common than differences in programming and frequency. Mainly after the SS linear progression. their was also some basic business issues that they didn't agree on with coaches and online coaching. sorry i forgot most of the detail

    I get so tired of hearing people take Rippetoe's comments out of context. I listened to his comments on warmups. His only point was to clarify you don't need these hour long mobility routine warmups to lift weights. He didn't care if you did it, he just felt it was a waste of time. He was tired of people trying to make it seem like yoga would somehow make you stronger, when it isn't true. He doesn't care if you enjoy it for other reasons. Rippetoe is primarily interested in cutting through the BS. Even his squat teaching is not going to cause you anymore back issues or pains than any other form of heavy lifting. Lifting heavy weights is going to cause occasional injuries, especially if you're pushing the limits. It's laughable when I hear some of these people claiming Rip's squat form will cause back issues when heavy squatting period will cause issues for people that push it and knee pain and soreness and other possible issues. Nature of lifting unless you're some circuit trainer or stay light all the time. I feel like a lot of people don't like the way Rip presents his information rather than the information itself.

Thanks and I'll always remember to TRAIN UNTAAAMMMED!!!

    Rip did indeed say that only a couple of sets with the empty bar is all that's necessary in one of the "Ask Rip" videos; however, in the "Starting Strength" book, he says that anyone who recommends against warming up is committing malpractice and follows that with a fairly thorough warm-up method. I know it's not fair to hold everyone to every word he ever says, but that's a big difference.
    That said, I agree with thoroughly warming up.

    Alan, a question regaring warming up. Based on the example you gave, thats like 20 extra reps spread over 5 sets of increasing weight before your even begin your working sets. Isn't that going to reduce the weight and reps you can do at your working weight and hinder your growth?

    • @GeneralSouL99

  • @GeorgeLocke
    @GeorgeLocke 6 лет назад +1

    In general, how long should you rest between warm up sets?
    Assuming the progression given at 3:40 45x5, R1, 95x5, R2, 135x5, R3, 185x3, R4 205x3, R5 -> working weight of 225x5x5, what amount of rest are we talking? I assume R1 and R2 would be rather short, then R3 at least a minute, then R4 and R5 at least three minutes?
    This is something I've been wondering about in my own training cuz it feels like I'm spending lots of time waiting between warm up sets recently....

    • @sumsar01
      @sumsar01 6 лет назад +1

      Some time shorter than the rest of your working sets. RPE 8 sets should be 4-5 min for squat and deadlift less for presses. RPE 9 maybe a little more if needed. The warmup sets should have appropriate rest to their RPE.

    well if y'all read the book practical programming for strength training coach rip wrote for warmups "do the complete range of motion for that exercise with an empty bar, for as many sets as necessary to warm up the range of motion. then increase the weight in even increments for 3 to 5 sets until the trainee is ready to handle the work set weight." it cannot get any simpler than that. people just dont read??!?

    Foam Rolling:
    It’s not a warmup, but it really helps to fight imbalances, squish tight muscles, and I can use it to crack or align some areas of my body. It has always helped me, and IMO it should be used unless your body really doesn’t need it - mine does.

    Hey Alan I have a super important question for you. I went back to your squat depth video and I'm currently training for football season. You strongly recommended atg which would help me with sport safety and also would help me gain weight which would be nice. Only problem is I tore my meniscus a lil over half a year ago and lost a bit of range of motion (just enough to not be able to kneel). I could still perform ATG squats but the surgeon/doctor told me not to squat past 90. My question to you is do you still recommend me to do ATG squats? Thanks

    • @canererbay8842
      @canererbay8842 6 лет назад

      The general recommendation is equal or slightly decreasing increments between the first warm-up weight and the first working weight. It's 50-30-20-20-20 for the 185 example on the video. And 50-40-50-40... pattern is just because of practical reasons of pound-plates (There's no plate that weighs the half of what 45 lb plate weighs.).

      People who are good with money don’t give a fuck about people who are bad with money. You get good with money by intentionally pursuing wealth accumulation.

      It's an educational seminar. It's a good investment if you earn your living coaching and there's good money in becoming a SS coach and there probably will also be good money in becomming a Barbellmedicin coach when that day comes.

    Post your form check to Reddit and ask questions there to save your money. A lot of real doctors and heavy weight lifters there, but then a lot of beginners of course.

      Falcon Lover the only subreddit worth posting a form check to is r/startingstrength or even the starting strength Facebook group
