I too got off the trail this year, but much earlier than you did. The shuttle driver/hostel owner who took me to a hotel gave me some good advice (I'm certain he's had this conversation before!). Basically, he said that you don't have to be a thru-hiker to be an AT hiker. Whether you day hike, section hike, LASH, or whatever, you are still - and will always be - an AT hiker. What you accomplished is fantastic, and it's an accomplishment you should always be proud of!!
Unfortunately, too often we assign our value as a person to our accomplishments and our productivity. We seek bigger and bigger things to FEEL "worthy of love". The reality is, none of it matters. I've seen it for 20+ years as an endurance athlete and coach. The true problem isn't mental, it's emotional, and there's a differed. One of these days I'll get to posting videos on all of this. Until then, all I can say is, we each matter, are worthy of love, and connection is proven to be the key to happiness.
@Kevin R Strauss Okay, although I agree, but sometimes it's just the body that is not able to cover such long miles in harsh weather conditions.
Totally
@@ElPiedro80, for sure. The body has a limits but there is so much more that can be done to take care of it than what most people (and doctors) realize. And one question I often ponder is "why do so many people push their body to the extreme?"
This is a little off topic now, perhaps. I just want to be clear that I 110% support @Laura's decision.
@@KevinRStrauss I'm only at 90%, I think she´s stronger as she thinks she is and is capable to thru-hike the AT, she just needs a couple of days/weeks to realize this.
If you never fail, you never learn, and you never grow. So…congratulations on the hike and the many lessons learned!
Thank you
I totally understand, this trail is effing hard. I have thoughts of quitting often tbh. I'm happy that you did what's best for you!! Congrats on all you've accomplished 😀
Thanks 😊
You definitely had to do what was best for you. Physical health and mental health are so much more important. The trail will be there when you are ready! Happy to hear you are keeping your channel and looking forward to your future endeavors and adventures! 😊
Being a fellow AT thru hiker, I can fully relate to all of your physical and mental challenges. Hiking the AT is hard, no matter your physical shape and conditioning. Take time to reflect on and reevaluate your preparedness.
Physical therapy helped me tremendously with foot and ankle issues, as well as changing shoe brands.
As hard as it is to hike alone, it's better to hike miles each day that work for your body, than to push more miles sooner in order to stay together with a group, and have your body in pain from over use. This is definitely a difficult choice to make, but as you establish your own mileage range, you will still be around other hikers, and eventually be able to hike longer days with higher milage once your body adjusts to the trail.
Eventually, you'll get your trail legs, and the pain will disipate. For some hikers, it takes two weeks. Other hikers can take two months or longer. Listen to your body, and hike the mileage that works best for you. It's a marathon, not a sprint, and there will be plenty of time to make friends along the way.
I believe that if you take time to reflect, recover your confidence, and regroup, that you will learn from this experience, and will have a much greater chance to succeed on your next attempt. There is no failure in trying, the only failure is when you stop trying.
Best of luck to you. Also, check out Trail Days in Damascus on May 19-22. Not only is it a really great experience, but you can learn a lot from successful past thru hikers. --Ozoner
The day you started the trail, you were successful. You did fantastic. I'm out on the trail right now and I've watched a lot of people go home. Some went home because they completed their goals. Some went home because the pain either mental or physical was that severe. Most people will never understand what you've gone through. I can empathize with that pain. Good luck in your future, I have no doubt you will be extremely successful in life.
I sure hate to hear this, but I totally understand. Hopefully you will be able to start again at a later time. I enjoyed the adventure and I appreciate you sharing it with us. You went farther than I could have gone. Best wishes to you. You don’t need to apologize to anyone!
Thank you :)
I’m not sure where I heard/read this statement but I think it provides an important perspective, that is “comparison is the thief of joy”. While most of us find it difficult to not compare ourselves and our accomplishments (or perceived lack there of) to others I think that is an important goal. Good luck and remember you gave yourself a chance by taking the first step.
You're a beast! not many people even attempt to do what you did. Keep doing you! 🙂
Hi Laura. I was injured on my hike and had to come off trail. It was hard but the best decision. Know that you are an amazing person and have accomplished what many others would like to do but can’t for a myriad of reasons. Don’t get down on yourself and don’t listen to negative comments. You have done well and can hold your head high. Wishing you all the best in the future.
No listening to the bad comments for sure
I’ve really enjoyed watching your videos, thank you for sharing your journey and keeping it real. Sorry to hear that it was so tough on you, both physically and mentally! Of course your health and well-being are the most important things, so it was a smart choice to come home and reevaluate the situation.
I’m happy to hear you’ll continue to make videos 😊 Running/races content would be interesting to watch. And if you get that job (fingers crossed) travel videos sound wonderful as well. I hope you’ll recover quickly and I’m sending warm thoughts your way 😊
Thank so much :)
I just want to say THANK YOU. I watch AT hikers every year during the bubble times because I just love seeing people follow a dream. I’m not sure I will ever be able to try due to back problems but I love to dream about it. I am currently in grad school and these last two weeks have been hard but hearing other people process their feelings during hard times is very helpful. I will follow whatever you get up to!!! Hugs❤
Thanks! Good luck with school
Friday...This is the first day of the rest of your life..you are cute, you are talented and you are smart. It's too bad that you didn 't get in with a different group that had the same plan of action that you had, but...that's all history now..the most important thing you can do immediately is to get to good podiatrist and have your feet checked out. I too have foot issues and knee issues and unless you have experienced the pain that goes with it you might not be able to understand..but I do. I have to say that you are one of the funnest vloggers that I have followed in several years. Thank you for all of these fun videos..I thoroughly enjoyed every single one of them! In closing..just remember..look out for that Bear‼️Good Luck and God's Peace!
I just found your channel while searching for genuine AT hike stories. It was smart of you to follow what your body was telling you to do for good reasons. Whatever you decide to do in the future, it's about your own destination in life and no one elses. Doing what God created you to do and following his plan for your life is where you'll be happiest. There won't be any doubt, anxiety, or lack of self-worth. God's plan is to prosper you and to give you hope and a future. I appreciate that you were honest with yourself.
Good job making a decision that supports your physical and mental health. There are a lot of folks documenting their thru-hike, and I think viewers are interested in the person and not just the hike. I look forward to your future videos :)
Thanks
I have watched your AT videos over the past couple months, and I enjoyed them all! It’s absolutely the right thing to take care of yourself. I’ll be watching for whatever fun adventure you choose to do next!
Thank you so much
Yes! That's right! Take care of yourself!
Take care of yourself and take time to rest and reflect. You did not fail, you embarked on an amazing journey and inspired numerous people. You were real and honoring your physical and mental well-being is never a failure. Would love to see future videos from you as you embark on whatever life brings you next. Chin up girl, you are amazing!
Thanks
The trail is always there. Section hike, long section hike, day hike and many other choices are still available for you. As a thru hiker, I can say I respect anybody that’s on the trail no matter how they do it. Even just doing some of the highlights and skip other sections. You’ve got a long life ahead of you. It’s your journey, don’t struggle with it.
Yepppp
I am sorry to see you quit even thou I understand your reasons. Every year I watch several people thru hiking the AT and this year your videos were the best. You showed the ups and downs that hikers go thru. Thank you for what you did and good luck in the future.
Glad you enjoyed the videos
Great job hiking as far as you did. The more I section hike, the more I know I am a section hiker and not a thru hiker. The trail will always be there for you!!!!
Thanks lady!
I feel the same way
Congrats on making it that far! That is really an accomplishment! Embracing the suck ia one thing, but breaking yourself is another. You will have lots of great experiences in the future. Also, if you can’t enjoy the journey, what is the point? You totally made the right decision. This is the first of your videos that I have watched, but I look forward to seeing your future adventures. Unless there is a reason why you can’t take it, you might want to try a 50-100mg B6 supplement for a few weeks (generic Wlgreens). It won’t fix your body, but it may help your energy and headspace. My daughter is doing a rigorous grad program, and she has found it really helpful for her anxiety and energy levels.
You are definitely not a failure. I’m sure you learned a ton and grew. Your body has a lot to do with continuing on or stopping. I have only just found your channel with this video so I don’t know what you went through. Good job!
I enjoyed watching your pre-hike and your on trail vlogs. HYOH also allows one to quit the trail at any time without any problems or concerns for what others may think of your decission. Hope your legs heal up quickly so you can resume you running!
Same here lol
You did great! You didn't fail anything or anyone. It took a lot of courage to do what you did. And I really admire you for the way you explain your reasons for ending your hike. You come across as exceptionally emotionally mature as you're not blaming anyone or making excuses. You didn't quit. You ended the hike and you had valid reasons to do so. Hold your head high and move on to the next adventure with confidence! Thank you for sharing your experience!
Totally
LEA You did a great job with your AT adventure. Be proud of what you accomplished. I am retired but over the years I have learned that timing is everything. This may not be the best time for you. I am very happy I found your vlog and followed your adventures. You have good energy. Be well. 🙂
Timing is everything. We shall see if the AT can happen another year
you are loved and respected, and have gone further and longer than many of us would have. you did good
Thank you
Anyone coming at you with any negativity from the comfort of their keyboard can kick rocks. What you did out there on the AT is more than what most could dream of doing and that’s something to be proud of! I loved watching your journey and appreciated your sincerity and realness about life on the trail! You seem like such a sweet, genuine person and I wish you nothing but the best for you and your YT channel!
Thanks 😊
You know yourself better than anyone. Live your life, and do what makes you feel best. You have a long life ahead of you, go out and live it. Enjoy whatever is next. God Bless, be well and thank you for the update.
Of course
Huge virtual hug, Laura. You gave it your all, and that's all you can do. Get your confidence back at all costs. The incessant pain you had would make anyone doubtful and whittle away mental strength quickly. You failed nothing. I'm no doctor, but it seems like physical damage could have been done if you pushed on. You tried something incredibly difficult, but it wasn't the right time. Hold your head high young lady! You'll bounce back mentally and physically, but it will take time. Be patient with yourself. You're stuck with me as a subscriber. 😂 Rest well, and I look forward to whatever you have in store when you're ready of course. Peace and Happiness Friday! ✌️❤
Totally agree about pushing on would cause serious damage. See ya around these videos :)
I plan, prayers allowing, to be at Springer Mountain next March of 2024
.
Good luck
I know you’re really disappointed in not getting to Katahdin, but you went on a 30 + day hike and (as a 59 year old ) you’re still young and got lots more adventures to look forward to. Congratulations on what you did ! I hope you get to feel better about your hike . Good Luck and Good Health on all your new adventures !!
Many adventures to come
was that a typo? she looks like she is in her 20's. Just sayin'
@@spectrum10 30 day hike not years 😁
Wishing you all the best! Your journey didn’t end, it just shifted. Lean in and do your thing! Your experience on the trail will always be with you!
Totally
You were not ready. To be an AT Through hiker is not something you just decide to do. it is a goal that you have to really want to achieve and have to work to attain. Start slowly and build your body and mind, once that is achieved then you can attempt to try again. Those that have ascended Mount Katahdin are a very small and elite group.
Sounds like you properly listened to your body. Lots of good times ahead.
Thank you for sharing. I'm glad you listened to yourself and are doing what you feel is best. I enjoyed watching the time you were on the trail and I look forward to any content you have coming in the future. 😊
Thanks
Laura - Appreciate your efforts to keep everyone informed. I know this had to be a difficult vid to make. If you do decide to finish the Foothills, be happy to provide some additional info which may prove helpful. In short, take a few days up near Brevard where there are something like 200 waterfalls , some great swimming holes, breweries etc. In fact, I'll be over near Gorges next week (also a great place to camp/hike).
As an aside, you are certainly not alone in re: to facing the challenges of the AT this year. There have been lots of people sharing your difficulties. Live and learn and fight another day and find a way to do the things you love in some fashion. Best !
Yes there has
You have every reason to feel good about yourself! You have accomplished more than almost everyone you know. You have persevered incredible adversity and triumphed over it. This is from a section hiker who has ended hikes sooner than planned more often than not and is now only 116.5 miles from completion. Those "failures" will cumulate in success. I'm sure that you will recuperate and rekindle the desire to get back on trail. When you do, hike your own hike and celebrate your accomplishments.
So close
Some people don't have the body to hike every day. I'm one of those people. I like short hikes. Hike around for a half day or so. Hiking big miles day after day is not for most people.
True
It doesn't matter when you out get off the trail. Everyone gets off the trail sooner or later. Unless you live there. A tree is a tree. You can see the trees there or at the end. I think you did beautiful ❤️
I appreciate the time you took to document your adventure.Your explanations will indeed help others as they hike or decide to take a break. I have a 37 year gap in backpacking trips......ya never know.....
Haha wow
I totally understand your feelings. I only did 10 days got to Dick's Creek and said this is it. I love hiking/backpacking, getting new gear, but found out that thru-hiking was not my cup of tea. Injury was not a cause for me, it was cold, hard, those also didn't change my mind. Just not wanting to be out there is the major reason. At 62 and being retired, I just want to go back to day/overnight hikes. Good luck in the future.
Yesss thruhiking is such a long commitment
Sadly we generally don’t learn and grow when things go well. I was injured on my first thru hike. I came out to fast. I returned a couple months later stronger and lighter than ever before. PT helped me a lot. I am sure you learned from this experience and grow as person. Please be kind and gentle to yourself. I am sure putting everything on RUclips puts a lot of stress on yourself. Hiking is not a competition. Take care
You are awesome! It’s a very difficult thing to do and you hiked many miles of the AT! Be very proud of what you did. ❤
Thank you
I think you made the best decision for yourself right now. I have a feeling you will be doing a thru hike again sometime in the future. Best of luck in your future adventures!
Yesss I definitely want to attempt a thruhike in the future!!! It’s a big goal of mine and hasn’t gone away.
Do a thru hike or section, whichever. If I were you, with the problems you with your feet, ankles and knees, I'd get those marathons run first. It really sounds like that's where your heart is. People of all ages do the hike, you can take is as slow as you want. Marathons get harder as you get older and your injuries could impede, so do those!!! Then worry about the hike. I know lots of hikers and lots of runners, they all say get your marathons done if that's where your heart is. Go to Atlanta and do the Peachtree Road Race, every 4th of July. A lot of my family runs that. I live in the Ap mountains, these are hard and mean mountains. Anyway, your face really lit up when you talked about the marathons. Do those!!!😊
I’ve been following you since the start and you should be proud of your effort and accomplishment. As a day/section hiker myself, I always enjoy following through hikers each year…. partly envious, always hopeful that will make it. It’s hard. Very hard. I don’t think I could do it. Don’t be embarrassed or fearful of negative comments. Be proud of your attempt, find your hiking joy again, and keep posting. I intend to keep following. Now go rest. 🙂
Wow, thank you!
You are the only one who needs to be comfortable with turning your hike into a section hike for very valid reasons. I would like to congratulate for having the tenacity to plan your trip; the endurance to hike 275+ miles through brutal weather and severe physical pain; the wisdom to know when it was time to go home; and the courage to move forward. These are successes in my world. I hope they are in yours. Wishing you further success in your life. Disney Run. Yay!
Disney runs are the best
Girl, don't worry about what other people think! You can always be like me and do day hikes, one section at a time, when you get time! It's all good! I probably couldn't have made it out there as long as you did....so congrats to you!!
I won’t worry about it anymore
Physical pain seems like a good reason to hop off the trail. A lot of things can be attempted multiple times, but you only get one set of knees and feet.
Being middle-aged now, even short hikes (3 or 4 miles) has me complaining about the climbs, and my wife complaining about the descents. I really think that pushing beyond the limitations of your body may be rewarding in the short term, but may cost more than you'd have imagined in the future decades.
I hope you get healed up, continue growing as a hiker, and enjoy the outdoors in ways that enrich your life.
Exactly… not willing to risk my future health
There is no shame in abandoning a hike and continuing there another day.
a great strength is knowing when to stop.
Keep your head held high.
Warm greetings from Germany
Thank you
There are no failed outings. There are only experiences gained and lessons learned. Yes, would love to see you finish the Foothills Trail. Like you, I started at Oconee and made it about 24 miles before having to bail. But I went back and finished, and loved it! It's a great trail.
Yesss I would love to go out and finish it.
I really think that you made right decision for you. I’m so proud that you have decided that your mental and physical health is more important. I definitely support you doing what you love. However, being in pain and trying to keep up with the group was not who you are mentally. So kudos to you for putting yourself first. Best to you on your future adventures. 💜🙏🏻💥
Thank you so much! Such kind words
Just another life experience and you are amazing! You did more than most and you can always come back! Don't sweat the small stuff! Cheers!
I learned a lot
You did not fail! You got out there, you learned. Don’t beat yourself up. Thanks for sharing your journey!
Totally
You did great, so proud!!! I’ve had 2 attempts in 2022, but had to return to the U.K. with damaged Achilles, having one final go starting in Feb 2023, I’ve worked hard on strengthening my heels (and lower back) losing 15kgs (hopefully) and adjusting my load! I am also working on my mental approach with the odd moment of anxiety. I fully understand where you are and acknowledge your bravery to plainly state what you’ve been going thru. I have subscribed and look forward to your future adventures…..wonderful x
Thanks
Don’t think twice about your decision to quit that hike. I am glad you did what was right for you. I am sure you will have plenty of opportunities to finish what you started.
I am glad you are doing ok. Looking forward to hearing about your future travels.
Thanks so much!
You are totally amazing for what you did accomplish…I want to be you!!❤
Thanks:)
You did the right thing for you at this time! Loved your journey that you shared with us. Be well!
Totally did
You made the right choice! Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Be proud of what you did accomplish and the lessons learned!!!
Thank you :)
Laura, you should not look at your hike as a failed attempt of a Thru hike, but you should take pride that you successfully completed a LASH! Congratulations! You not only did it under harsh weather conditions, but you did it while constantly maintaining a vlog. That’s nothing to sell yourself short on. Now, if you choose, you can pick back up on trail and continue on as a Section Hiker, picking better weather conditions and better enjoy the trail. It’s all about perspective … I just finished section hiking the Smokys last week and on the first night on trail, I was asleep in my hammock and was woken up at 5:30am by a 70mph thunderstorm that ripped my rain fly stakes out of the ground. For 15 to 20 minutes I was hanging on for dear life, wondering about surviving. But I did, and chalked it up as an experience. I know how you felt about your feet … mine swelled up so bad during the Massachusetts section that I had to get off trail. I saw a pediatrist when I got home and got fixed up with custom inserts. If you don’t get back on trail in the future, I get it, but there’s no expiration date on section hiking the whole thing … and you’re on a great head start. Good luck on whatever you decide, and again Congratulations on what you’ve so far accomplished! Sugar Bear
Yikes at your experiences!
@@lauraevelynashley Laura, that Big 70 mph storm was in total darkness, but I got some footage and captured a smidgen of some of the essence of the storm when it lighted up and the winds toned down to 40mph. It’s on “Section 13 - Day 2” on my RUclips channel.
Thanks for taking us on this journey. The trail has called my name every year to do a section hike. Can you tell us about the gear you used the most and what you liked about it. I'm always looking for new ideas that everyone can share. Thanks so much for what you have accomplished.
I honestly used all my gear. There wasn’t a single thing I’d get rid of. I spend so much time testing out my gear prior to Trail that I really had it dialed in.
There are a lot of people who do section hikes, others who do much shorter days, even as you were with that group, if you had stayed back you would have hooked up with other people/groups, maybe even a few different ones. You would have met lots of new people that way. You were hiking your group's hike not yours. Also I've heard the PCT trail isn't as rough, I live in the Appalachian mountains, these are very rough and hard trails! Be proud of what you did, and the things you plan to do. All those marathons sound awesome to me. Don't stop on here, you're good to watch. I'm hoping you've been to a doctor regarding your knees, ankles and especially your feet. It really sounds like you're gonna have an awesome life, only thing is listen to your body sooner. It would be a shame to do permanent damage!! And in every aspect of life honey, 'hike your own hike' ❤😊❤
First off Congrats on hiking how far you went. Not alot of people out there would even consider doing it. Second, Anyone that comments on here about you quitting is small minded and self centered or might have had money involved in you completing it. So do NOT worry about those "people". I'm very glad for one that you have the tenacity to get on here to let everyone know what happened and what your plans are. It takes alot of guts to do that. It also IS a great video for those that are coming behind you to make them understand what it takes! What someone goes through is an individual feeling. but it does take alot of effort to get on here like this. most hikers would just drop off the Vlog and not explain or something like that. So from me and Buttons Congrats again and you hike your own hike the way you want to do it! Don't ever let someone tell you different. P&B..... P.S. Go get a pedicure!!! those toes need some WORK Girl!
Thank you! I appreciate your words in This comment :) it has uplifted up:)
Just found out you got off trail. I’m really sorry to hear that but you take care of you. It was a pleasure hiking with you! Best of luck on all your future endeavors. Soup Cup
Thank you soup cup! You got this
Just do you and don't feel that you need to apologize for that. I'm learning the same lesson. Take good care. I'm looking forward to what's next for you. I'll be watching. :)
My moms name was Tammy :)
Thanks for this video, I totally understand why you´ve stopped this thru-hike, looking forward for your upcoming videos . . . especially about the Foothill Trail 🙂
Yes hoping to get out there, got to rest the full and fully heal before then
@@lauraevelynashley The Foothill Trail looks great in autumn, I do hope you´re really healed before that 🙂
thanks for your honesty. I really hope you allow yourself to see all that you learned and tune into how strong you are, even though you may not feel that way now. I suggest you do the videos you like to do and then it will be fun for us to watch. 😃 Looking forward to seeing what you do next!
Thank you
That's a really difficult situation to try to "hike your hike" while also being tied to a group. It's hard. Regarding ankle/foot pain, both hiking and running, might be worth getting some analysis and checking whether you have well-matched footwear to your bio-dynamics.
Yes totally going to get my gait analyzed
It took real guts to make that video. 👍🏻 Good luck on your next adventures!
It did indeed
Good that you listened to your body. You did the right thing. The trail will be there if and when you want to return. Great adventure, 36 days of hiking is more than most people could do.
Thanks
Thank you thank you thank you for your vulnerability and sharing your thoughts processes so thoroughly. It truly sounds like you made the best decision for you and I commend you for that. The idea of ‘quitting’ a thru hike has such a strong negative connotation; I strongly believe we need to begin changing that perception as the choice to end a hike is just that, personal choice. I can’t wait to see your continued content and am particularly interested in race videos and the Foothills Trail. Please reach out if you ever need. Vlogger to vlogger, I know how the comments can be. 🧡 Sending you much love!
Thanks girl :)
So back in 2022 I attempt my first thru hike on the AT. I felt that I could do it. Well that was a big nope. I took an ankle injury while I was in Georgia. Took 3 zeros icing my foot at the Hiawassee budget Inn. On day four I felt great day five I left for the trail and got about two days outside off Franklin NC. When I could not walk any more without severe pain. So back to Hiawassee and call the wife to pick me up. Yup that sucked. It took 90 days of physical therapy to fix what I hurt. But , I am going out on the AT in March of 2024. Look you did the right thing and I hope you try it again. Do not concern yourself about what other people may think about you taking an extended break from the AT.Rest up and at another date and time do it. Life short have fun and everyday is a good day.
Love to hear it! I’m hoping to get back out there… just gotta save up again. It’s goi g to take a while
@@lauraevelynashley yes saving money is one of the reasons it’s taken me two years to go back. One bit of advice ,well maybe. One. You hike you. Meaning hike your speed ,your pace. Also in the begin do only 5-8 mile days , take three weeks in Georgia. It will be alright. Don’t get caught up in the race. I know I did and by the time I hit Woody’s gap I all most quit. Also I had the wrong foot ware for me. So my feet were killing me. So I went back to Dahlonega. Where I took two zeros. Bought new foot ware rewrote my plane, which was “there is no plan”. Remember it’s a hike not a race, that and every day is a good day.
@@royferrissugarbear5306 thanks! Yeah I agree with that you said. I definitely have reflected and plan to hike a very different “plan” 😂
Regarding pain during an activity, a good rule is to stop the activity if the pain does not subside or gets worse - or to REASONABLY continue the activity if the pain improves with the activity. It looks like you may have been well overdue for at least a significant break just to address the pain and potential injury.
I hope that you can find your way back out - and it looks like you would be better off tagging along more or less on your own, or until you find others who hike to your style. Nothing to be worried about as everyone should get to hike their own hike.
Good luck in planning your BRIGHT future.
Yep
Laura thank you so much for sharing your experience on AT. You did great, and you made right decision to stop..You will to great going forward in life. Thank you again
Thank you for the support
You hang in there young lady. Very proud for your honesty. I hope your confidence comes quickly back. Glad you are taking care of yourself. Stay tough. Even though I don't know you personally very proud to know you .👍👍👍
Awww thanks
If you aren't having fun, if you are in pain and physically challenged, in pain, exhausted, then getting off trail and waiting for another day is the right call to make. YOu had rotten weather and were having physical difficulties. YOu listened to your body and made the right call. No shame at all! Its a tactical retreat and temporary.
Thanks
Always remember that most of the folks that were out there on the AT with you are some of the top hikers in the world. If you aren't as fast or strong of a thru hiker as others on the trail it is easy to get down on yourself; however, you are still likely top 1% of the world when it comes to hiking ability.
Okay yeah
Have you been to a doctor or physical therapist since being home? Someone to evaluate your leg issues. How about someone for mental health - to help with your mind set? Good Luck for the future.
Nope! Just enjoying being home and relaxing resting and recovering
At least you tried, better than most people who sit at home just watching the TV. :-D
You should be very proud of your AT attempt. So many don’t even take that first step. Your physical & mental health should always come first. Wishing you the best with possible new career & future running goals. And if you decide to do the Foothills trail again, let me know. I live in NC and would love to do it again someday 🥾
Thanks!!! :)
You made the right decision to not go back on AT (for now) would love to see your running videos. Smaller hikes would be nice too.
Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to your next video. Please stay safe, and enjoy no matter what you do.
Thank you, I will
Hi
Thanks for sharing. Hiking the AT is certainly a personal decision that you need to make that best fits you.
I will say from listening about your pain issues that your shoes and insoles were probably a factor. You may want to explore different shoes and insoles whether to support hiking in the future or running long distances. You may also want to include the massage ball into your routine.
Perhaps you may want to consider doing the AT in sections- you are young and could spread over numerous years. Another thing to consider might be a shorter thru hike like the Benton MacKaye 300 mile trail. Let’s you try other equipment (especially shoes and insoles) and rebuild confidence?
Again, this is a very personal decision. You have already accomplished more than most. Whatever you choose to do going forward remember- hiking should be something you enjoy - not something you endure.
Agree on the shoes. Altras are not for everyone yet everyone thinks that’s the shoe for them.
Yes I have
You did what was best for yourself it is not fun to be in pain!
Hey it's not easy as long as you're okay that's all that matters doesn't matter what anybody else thinks.maybe if you take a couple of weeks off assess whatever it is you need to you might look at it different maybe next year , look better maybe never will look better you did a good job with what you did. big enough adventure for life time
Cool beans
Not failing, just another learning experience. Some things to consider for next time:
1) HYOH, at your own pace, nobody else’s. People come and go. New people come along. Embrace being alone. If you absolutely must keep up with other people, then you are subordinating your health to somebody else’s pace. Part of the mental growth of hiking is being on your own.
2) cut pack weight. And that includes extra video equipment.
3) consider strengthening foot health by walking barefoot on soft natural ground, paying attention to walking form. Start slow. 5 min a day. It should be soothing and massaging not painful. Gradually increase time walking barefoot. If problems persist, see podiatrist and physical therapist. Explore minimalist shoes to train in… to develop foot health.
4) if foot health improves, add a backpack while still wearing minimalist shoes. Low weight. Short distances on natural surfaces. If that goes well, increase weight and increase time.
I strongly advice against running if you have the pains you do. You are likely just repeating a motion that is aggravating your stress injuries. Walk before you run. Walk before you hike.
Good luck.
Thank for you advice
There will be other adventures 😎 I enjoyed your videos and look forward to more in the future, seems you're a natural on camera! The distance you hiked is still a huge accomplishment.
Thank you that’s sweet
You did your best and that’s all that matters. You should be proud of your journey!! I’m not calling my hike a through hike I’m calling it my journey and doing my own thing. Every time I hike with others it their hike and the miles they want to hike. I’ve had some bad experiences with hostels and shuttle drivers so I’m trying not to let that get in my head.
Totally hard
Don't beat yourself up... 75% of Thru hikers stop every year. It's not for everyone's anatomy. It is always tough to find we all have limits. Part of living is being able to find what we excel at and enjoy. You have a kind soul, life will treat you well.
Thanks
Long story short, do what makes you happy, live your own life. Best Wishes. - Grizz
Totally
Sorry that your hike ended. Try some light hiking shoes or light boots. They will save your feet. Trail runners are great for trail running but they are not made to cushion your foot for backpacking every day for 6 months.
Thanks for the tips!
No worries.
Hike your own hike definitely applies.
I enjoyed your videos and your great attitude.
I myself am working on doing section hikes and have been for a couple years.
Heading down to Virginia next month for two weeks.
Heading south on the AT.
Good thing about section hikes is you can choose when to go!!!
Keep hiking-getting it done is getting it done.
Da Breeze
Exactly
The mistake people make is going to the AT with the intention of completing it.
The intention should be to go to the AT to see how far they can get and if they manage to be the small percentage that do complete, great. Completing is very unlikely. It doesn't come down to just your ability, but chance, circumstance and you can't foresee the possible physical/health problems that can arise.
Do go with the intention of trying your best, but shit happens. Don't expect it to be a success on the first try. Or it to even actually be a thing you want to do once you get a taste for it.
So if you don't, well, no big deal.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do :) Make whatever content you feel like.
Totally will haha
Hope you get back there!
Ya never know
You’ll have another chance! Don’t be so hard on yourself! Keep training if you want to try again. 😊 You did great!
I totally will
Looking forward to seeing what life has in store for you next! As a runner also, I would love to see info about training and races on your channel. And Disney! I’m headed down to Springtime Surprise races this weekend.
Glad you were able to make the best decision for yourself! And good luck with the job application process!
Thank you! Oh my gosh! I am so jealous. I wish I was going to springtime surprise.
I'll tell you, Laura, your "what I'm taking with me" video showed up as a RUclips algorithm recommendation and I like those kinds of videos. Always interesting to see how other hikers think about their gear.
Normally, I watch the video and never return to that channel. I only subscribe to about 5 hikers. I subscribed to your channel because your honest, personal, open, and humble approach I found very refreshing. And I've been watching for dozens of videos and have no intent to stop now.
If you lose subs, they weren't here for the right reasons.
If you get negative comments about this decision, ignore them. The kind of people who would kick you when your down for making a choice they have no right to judge are not worth paying attention.
I'm 50. I've failed at MANY things in life, and those have been the most valuable experiences. They are life's greatest teachers. And if you really learned from a failure, then it was never really a failure - just a lesson to help you choose your real path in life.
Hang in there, young lady. You're a champ in my book, and I look forward to more videos to come.
Thank you that is very kind
You gota do you, other people are not feeling what you are and by far your health and well bring is far more important than what anyone has to say. They were not there and have no idea what it takes. Hope you get the newe job and I from one will continue to watch your channel, good luck in your future endeavors.
Thanks
You should be proud of the accomplishment to Hot Springs!
The trail will always be there. Sometimes section hikes are so much more exciting and fulfilling!!
Keep on getting out there!!
Totally agree
You made the right decision for you. Congratulations on a wonderful attempt, hope you are proud of yourself. Did you find out what caused all the pain and swelling? I love to hike and live in an amazing place with gorgeous hiking. About 5 years ago I thought it was a good idea to start running again and hurt my knee, bad. First thought was this stupid running will ruin my first love, hiking. I decided I wasn’t built for running any longer, lol. Looking forward to what the future brings for you. We only have one set of legs/knees/ankles/feet….
So we are the opposite
@@lauraevelynashley but somehow the same …
Thanks for the video. I appreciate you taking the time to do it. There's many who just quit the videos when they quit their thru hike attempt and it speaks highly of you that you didn't.
Sorry to hear you were in pain while hiking. My hunch is that you wore the wrong shoes. Altra shoes are quite notorious for not providing a lot of support, especially the Lone Peaks. Which is good for some hikers but inadequate for others. In hindsight you should have paid much more attention to getting your footwear right especially since you had issues in the past with plantar fasciitis. You should definitely still get foot analysis done and maybe get orthopedic inserts or better shoes for you (Blaze Physio is someone I have seen help hikers with this).
Using trail family as a mental crutch is problematic and a real pitfall. Starting with someone is another one. It is as mentally draining to have to keep up as it is to wait around and do less miles. Though truth be told, in the beginning there's no such thing as too few miles. But so many people for some reason need to push in the beginning only to get injured...it is what it is but no one is forced to hop on that train.
I hope you'll give it another try if you want to. But it's not for everyone and incredibly hard by our society's standard. Nothing wrong with shorter hikes.
My first AT thru hike attempt was a failure as well and then I returned and did it. I also got more appropriate gear that was lighter, you have room for improvement there as well which would help your body a lot.
All the best and keep busy and plan new adventures to not fall into a mental pit. Happy trails
Lol can’t improve on my gear weight by much. Shoes were never an issue for prior to the hike. But I have a whole video coming out about things I would do differently later this month
@@lauraevelynashley Yeah, that's the thing with thru hiking. You constantly need to manage stuff and take care of things. Little, unnoticeable problems in daily life become major problems on a thru hike. It's like failing the Tour de France and then telling someone your city bike was never a problem before...
18lbs base weight is about a third more than you conservatively need. I would call that room for improvement. But you could've definitely done it with that gear. Right now there is plenty of hikers on the AT with worse gear who will make it to Kathadin. Just trying to be helpful. The gear will serve you well on your future day and weekend hikes. It will be the envy of other hikers even and you can share stories from when you attempted the AT. Nothing wrong with that.
Anyhow, was nice to watch your videos! All the best
