Never seen such beautiful graphics in the PS1. A pitty I missed this game back there. I'll check this out on my PSP. Sacrificing textures over resolution and framerate was a very good decision, this graphics ages very well.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH !!!!!!! I've just been looking like a madman for this for the past hour, I knew there was a fighting game I'd forgotten about all these years...thought it was on Dreamcast for some reason... THANKS SO MUCH FOR POSTING !!!! This is ENORMOUS for me !
Totally agree the graphics are still impressive till this day. Man i wish we could get Tobal 3 or just a new Tobal in general or even a Tobal 1 and 2 HD remake that would be awesome.
Indeed. The Tobal games used the so called "high resolution" mode of the PS1 running at 60fps. Essentially the game frame was rendered at a full SD resolution size (640x480) unlike most games which rendered the frame at 320x240 and then upscaled the frame. That's why these games look so sharp. The tradeoff for this was the very, very limited use of texture maps in the game for performance reasons. However, they used the PS1's Gouraud Shading features to make everything look smooth.
Sorry for digging up an old post but how can it possible for analog tv to run a game at 480i (or any other interlaced resolution) in 60fps? Being an interlaced video means that every single full frame is composed of 2 fields (one odd lines field and one even lines fields). Every field needs 1hz for being displayed. So if one frame must be composed of two fields it means that 60 fps needs 120Hz tv set for being displayed within 1 second..
The soundtrack of this game is so amazing, my bro and I played this all the time back in the day

The graphics in Tobal 2 were way ahead of it's time. Looks like an early PS2 game which is saying alot for a PS1 game.
