It depends on your location, I am from NYC, where there are tons of people everywhere on the streets and everybody is always in a rush, everyone has too many friends, there is always something to do and it is far better to go to a event you are interested and talk to the strangers at the event. In general the people that talk to random strangers are mentally ill, trying to set you up to get robbed, trying to beg and guilt you for money, trying to sell you on some product, convert you to a religion, try to get you to donate to a specific charity, convert you into a cult etc...
I remember the first time I left the city, and went to an extremely high income small town in connecticut where everybody was white and extremely wealthy. In the main shopping area people instantly noticed me as a out of towner and they would make eye contact smile and say good morning, people would go up to me and ask me if I was new in town or just visiting. The town was one of those towns where everybody knew each other and frequently spent time together at town events.
So really it depends on your location.
If you grow up in a large city filled with crime and scams you are going to be on your guard especially women. There is no need to talk to people on the street because there is no shortage of people sharing your common interests and hobbies
If you grow up in a poor area you aren't going to talk to strangers

When people approach me on the street, it's always because they want my money. I've learned to be afraid of people. It's either me getting jumped or a drug addict following me around begging for money

Here in the part of the UK Im from people don’t really speak to others who you don’t know unless they want money or sign up to something or you can tell there’s something wrong with them in their head and they won’t be making much sense, I went to stay with my cousin in the Midwest in America and I was so taken back as to how much people round their spoke to each other like I was so not use to it like I’m fine with talking to people it’s just I was waiting for them to ask me for money or to sign up to something but people there are genuinely just kind and want to talk

Yes unfortunately social media has had a very destructive effect on human verbal interactions.

Context is everything. When I first moved to the place I currently live i found your average person to be snooty and somewhat prejudice towards me based on socio economic factors in their & my backgrounds. So I felt like most people were really not even capable of comprehending me as a human being, so I kept isolated, why try to make friends with people who objectively perceive themselves as superior to you? I do still feel that way, although I am trying to give everyone the benefit of the doubt until I see a good reason not to, and reaching out to people and trying to be empathetic, even though i quite literally feel like they're not capable of it.

It's the western society, all material. Work my tail off, in ten years I'm out and off to the Philippines.

Empathy and sympathy are definitely dead. Once you become an adult you realize that relationships aren’t really anything. You date because your lonely and need attention nowadays. It’s like drugs, just say no lol.

Technology dependency has definitely degraded a lot of social skills. I've noticed modern women are very "selective" in their receptiveness to unsolicited male interactions. Definitely wasn't like that pre-smart phone.

    Self preservation.
You were born in the wrong decade.
You would have loved the 70s or 80s.
