  • In this vlog, we're visiting El Jem (or El Djem), Tunisia. This city in the center of Tunisia is home to one of the largest and best-preserved Roman coliseums outside of Rome! I'll also show you what it's like to take a 'louage' -- a Tunisian minibus.

Same thing for your country. You have a whole Roman city that needs to be prepared and become the focus of the world's harm. Tunisia and Algeria followed Roman and had a lot of relics. But our successive governments don't give it a significance.

Here some answers to your questions:
*The guy heading next to you in the station is working based on commission every passenger he brings; he will get a commission on the sold ticket, it is weird I agree.
*The louage stops in a small town called Swassi which is in Sousse province, the name is quite similar to Sousse.
*The rooms in the colosseum are cages where animals and gladiators are kept,
It is great that you have been able to go to the top of the colosseum it was closed until recently. Also, the view with drones is amazing, happy you have been able to use it because is not allowed unless authorization; I suppose.

What is beautiful in Tunisia is the contract. from north to south, the landscape changes completely, from beach and forest to desert and sand dunes. To the north, Bizerte, Béja, Tabarka and Ain Drahem are fantastic, breathtaking landscapes. Further south, Sousse, Monastir, Mahdia with the catacombs, el Jem .... Further south, the desert and the Berber sites and the waterfalls of Chebika and Tamerza. Many thanks for you Doug. Every time I see your videos, I realize that Tunisia is more beautiful than it looks.

In the state of Mahdia in Tunisia, and in the coastal city of El Jem, which was called in antiquity (thysdrus), one of the greatest Roman ruins in Africa still stands. It is the great Roman theater famous for the El-Jem Palace (or El-Jem Amphitheater), which was built more than 1800 years ago, and despite this, it still receives peaceful human artistic performances and festivals, and not as it was at the time of its establishment as a theater for bloody shows, wrestling shows and slave fights.
Most of the accounts about its construction suggest that the Roman Emperor, Gordian II, ordered its construction in 238 AD to be a great Roman theater comparable to its counterpart in the imperial capital in Rome. Beyond beauty and splendor. In their work, the designers addressed all the engineering errors that occurred in the construction of the largest and earlier Roman amphitheater. Therefore, El Jem amphitheater remained in the eyes of archaeologists and historians a first-class architectural and artistic work, testifying to the sophistication of this city. Over the ages, the amphitheater has been the scene of great historical events, as many events that marked turning points in human history took place.
The area of the palace, which has a high Roman facade, is 148 meters by 122 meters, and the dimensions of the arena are 65 meters by 39 meters, and its runways could accommodate about 35,000 spectators. Thus, it is one of the largest theaters in the world, as it participates in the list of great theaters such as the Colosseum of Rome, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Capua Theater, and the Pozzuoli Theater. It was inscribed by UNESCO on the list of World Heritage Sites in 1979.
This huge master has seen several battles. Sources indicate that "during the Islamic conquest of Africa at the beginning of the eighth century AD, the Berber queen "Dhamia", nicknamed the priestess, took refuge with her army for four years after her defeat in the second battle against the leader Hassan Ibn al-Nu'man. In 1695, the western side of the palace was demolished by order of the Bey (king) of Tunis so that no one else would be holed up there in the future . After the inhabitants took this landmark as a fortress in their revolt against the rule of the Bey at that time."
Thus, the calamities of time descended on this huge palace, and it did not withstand much against the force of nature and the nature of wars. It was a sign of the greatness of human ambition, and it became a victim of human violence over time. The palace was also not spared from looting and the theft of its contents, mosaics, inscriptions and marble over the past centuries, as it was abound with rare antiquities that were later transferred to the Archaeological Museum in El-Jem. Mosaic floors, whose drawings reflect the daily life and economic lifestyle of Rome's residents, have also been moved towards national museums.
And when this landmark has befallen, it has been sustained over the past century by some care and preservation of what remains of it. Some historical photographs in 1900 show that the theater of El Jem was neglected and its lower part was covered by a heap of dust that concealed the shape it is in today.
The theater is still largely in its original form, as it has enjoyed maintenance in several periods of history, had it not been for some events that prompted the demolition of some of its sides, when the amphitheater was used as a fortress to shelter in, and its stands are not in their first condition. There are many rooms and cellars in the theater, and it is said that there are long basements that connect the palace to distant areas, but they have not been discovered yet.
Beneath the stage were two galleries, accessed by light from the middle opening of the arena, and two apertures on either side of the arena whose function was to raise slain beasts, such as lions and leopards, and gladiators of prisoners of war, who were deposited in chambers under the arena; To be released on feasts and huge occasions that witness a huge turnout of the people under the auspices of the nobles and gamblers who sit in the runways to watch the battles of monsters and the battles of gladiators from prisoners of war and chariot races.
Most of the antiquities found in the theater area and around the old city, which are many, were transferred to the El Jem Museum, which was also erected on the site of a Roman house.
