Here’s how the Integra was Acura's first, and possibly last sportback

  • In this episode I provide the history of the Acura Integra, which along with the Legend were Acura's first models when the brand launched in North America in 1986. Initially available as a 3-door or 5-door hatchback, it would later lose the 5-door, but then become more popular thanks to its GS-R trim in 1993, and the Type R in 1997. It also gained fame as one of the stars of the first Fast and Furious movie. But in 2002, Acura re-did their model names and changed the Integra to the RSX, and sales dropped with sportback models losing popularity, ending in 2006. Acura brought back the Integra name in 2022 as a 5-door sportback.

Your comment about insurance is spot on. I vividly recall buying a new 2000 Grand Prix Instead of a USED Integra in NYC entirely based on insurance costs which were almost double for the Integra. The company even cited the risk of auto and parts theft as the reason which also gave me pause.

Great video! My first “fast” car was a 98 Type R Integra. Very fun and quick for the day. Lots of great memories with that car, I drove it to see the first Fast and Furious movie in 2001. A couple of years later sold it because I didn’t have a garage and was worried about it getting stolen. Definitely one that would be worth a lot of money if I had held onto it. Thanks for the nostalgia!!!

I had a 2020 Kia Stinger GT2 that I bought for $41,500 at the very start of the pandemic and sold for the same amount a little more than 2 years later during the used car bubble. I'm now forever sold on the liftback/sportback sport sedan as my favorite car style. I hope to own another one someday. I'm in a tuned VW Alltrack for now that I bought a year after selling my Stinger. It's my second of those and what I'll either drive until the wheels fall off or I can find and am willing to pay for a the exact right low mileage Stinger/Arteon/S5 in the next few years.

If ur still looking for future video ideas there's a lot of history in the Nissan Z and ZX models. Late-1960's to the current day, the switch from chain driven straight-six engines to belt driven V6's, carb to efi. n/a to boost, back to n/a and then boosted again lol. I haven't seen any confirmation of this statement but I was also told Nissan couldn't afford to make the Z and the GTR concurrently so they're dropping the GTR...? I could be wrong but after 15+ years in production it's probably about time

The reason why Acura was introduced was because in the 80's, the U.S. put taffifs on Japanese cars to prevent Japanese imports from outselling the domestics. So when Honda started making cars in the U.S. to avoid the taffifs, they decided to import their JDM high-end models, rename them Acura, and market them as luxury cars so Honda can make more profits from their more expensive cars.

I had a difficult time choosing my first brand new car in 1992. I looked at a Nissan Altima, Honda Accord EX 5 speed sedan and Acura Integra (2nd Gen). The Nissan got expensive if you wanted a sunroof- they made you buy the leather seats. The Acura was more than the Honda, so I felt the Honda was the better buy. I loved my Honda and traded it in on a new 2000 Accord V6 Coupe.

When I was shopping for my car an Integra A-Spec was a consideration and truthfully I really loved the car itself. Awesome audio system. Great hatch. Very comfortable. Good steering/suspension and stuff...
But what killed it was the CVT. They should have kept the DCT from the ILX on the Aspec at least. The CVT murdered the car to me. A manual isn't an option for me (joint issues) so I need something automated.

I have a friend who owned both the 90's Integra and still owns the '06 RSX. She is not a fan of the new "Integra". She liked the fact that it was a small sporty car with no crazy frills or thrills; just a manual gearbox, decent stereo and low to the ground feel. Raising the height, giving it rear passenger doors and offering it base as an automatic was a turn off for her. It's now just a fancy Civic, which is a decidedly different car.

😅About the only detail left out was the unusually long lifespan of the 3rd gen Integra, which usually would be completely redesigned after 4 years, but instead got a very mild facelift & doubled that! & perhaps that the 1st was closely based upon the packaging of the original Accord 3dr, finally getting the performance engine upgrade most wanted... And that in Japan cheaper Integras were also available with basic Civic 1.5 & 1.6 carburetored engines.

@@fredschriks8554 Both Kia and Hyundai have come a long way. I currently own a 2009 Genesis 4.6 with 190k miles and it runs like a champ. It's honestly better than 95% of the (almost two dozen) American cars I have owned since 1993, the exceptions being my old 75 Buick Riviera that had over 300k miles and a 79 Thunderbird with almost 250k miles when I sold them.
If I had the money, I would get a Stinger GT when I eventually get rid of this car.

@fredschriks8554 they definitely look good, other than the refrigerator EV9 and newest Santa Fe. But they have a ton of problems with oil consumption and premature engine failure. The oil consumption also clogs expensive catalyst converters and fouls O2 sensors.

@@Noah_E Maybe over there in the US. Here in Europe KIA is in the top 3 of most sold cars.

Hopefully it wasn't stock. 8.8 seconds 0-60 is slow. My nearly 4 ton truck is a second faster, and that's for perspective, not to brag.

People will disagree with my choice, but I like the second-generation sedan the most.

In the late '90s and early 2000s, many Honda's and Acura's were stolen. They were easy to steal because we didn't have the engine immobilizer technology back then

Don't forget that Hector is going to be running 3 Honda Civics with spoon engines".
