Here's one more use for curry paste (although it does involve coconut milk) ruclips.net/video/PAmctHjPAlQ/видео.html
And here's a link to what I think is a very cool website :) www.patreon.com/shaq
i have never been able to find makrut limes or their zest in any freezer section of any asian grocery store near me :( I was able to find leaves though
Where'd you get that salmon crudo recipe?
For a while now a standard in my breakfast rotation has been a big hunk of sourdough toast, a thin slather of curry paste, topped with a healthy dose of apricots jam. A not too sweet fruitiness paired with a nice heat and savory goodness. It rules.
we'll call it keegan curry toast

Rhat does sound interesting!
That sounds fucked up dude
@@ababababaababbba this loser has never had chutney
It's crazy how much higher quality your content is compared to foodtubers with way higher subscriber counts.
Thank you for introducing me to the idea that food components can be swapped out/replaced with alternatives, and that most foods have a balance of different components. I used to think cooking was boring, but I got into cooking about 6 months ago because of channels like you and Chef Jon Kung. Thank you!
Edit: Thanks for the likes! Best community award goes to you guys :)
uff, i cant STAND that Kung guy. so pretentious and self entitled lol, but glad to hear ur enjoying cooking
speaking of chef jon, check out check out chef john from food wishes!
@@BigBootyBatman really? i’ve watched him and i didn’t really feel that about him. i think he makes some good points, especially about fusion food and mixing cultures together in cooking.
.
@@nicolle2126 I second this. Chef John is a treasure!
Speaking of peanut butter.. Toss some noodles with some curry paste and peanutbutter for some thick and saucy noodles, add whatever extra veg or protein you want for an easy meal. The "just peanuts" peanut butter types are better for this application IMO, and it also works great with almond butter.
"This is not a video about how to make curry paste", still shows you everything you would realistically need to make a basic curry paste in the first 20 seconds
well, it's not like he's wrong. what was this video about?
What a great bunch of ideas! I also think curry paste could be used in falafel, it would be a good way to change up their flavour.
Fancy seeing you here!
That would be amazing! Love your channel, its been so nice to learn about of the delicious dishes that I used to eat not knowing how they were made.
"ice cube tray in the freezer full of ready-to-use curry paste" number one quality of life improvement in my kitchen
Yeah! My mom does this when she buys tomato paste in large jars. That stuff usually spoils
@@eZU4nQsWN9pAGsU38aHj it absolutely does. you know what else is good is garlic/olive oil ice cubes. you usually use garlic with oil, garlic goes bad quickly, so you blend it up and fill an ice tray with that delicious liquid
Every video you put out is fantastic, and everyone in the comment section has already praised you for this one (rightfully so), so I’ll just take a second to say that I am SO grateful you don’t start your videos with “HEY GUYS! IT’S YA BOY SHAQ, WELCOME BACK TO MY CHAAAANNEEEEL!!” and follow with a drawn out, unnecessary intro. I love that you immediately get to the point and give us info we could actually use.
Curry shrimp toast? Curry sausage??
That Aly and AJ reference???
You snapped😳
🫣🫣😳
literally came here to say this, our king has taste in more ways than one 💖
I love how this guy’s videos have zero bullshitting. Other RUclipsrs need lessons from this guy.
You kind of covered it with the egg, but I have a Jamie Oliver cookbook where he just rubs curry paste on a chicken breast before pan frying it which was great when I tried it. I also wonder about using curry paste with some neutral oil as a seasoning for roasted potatoes or vegetables. I guess the main lesson here is that we can treat curry pastes as a much more flavorfully deep spice mix that we can add to anything. :) Love the video
regarding the sausage recipe: In thailand there's a dish called phad phet (spelling is off my bad) but it's basically minced meat sautéed with curry paste with added garlic, chilis, fish sauce and whatever else you want, usually finished with chiffonade basil and eaten with rice. a great recipe if you want to forgo the patties and loads of fun to study fry if you have a wok
Phuck that sounds delicious and super easy
I might not be making curry paste anytime soon but I love the lesson of critical thinking and versatility in the kitchen. I have a homemade teriyaki sauce that makes a great base for potsticker dipping, I just dump in black vinegar until it’s thin enough and add Sri racha until it’s spicy enough.
This way I don’t have to wait until it’s teriyaki time again to get use a sauce that required special ingredients.
I could have sworn I slept on a mattress.
Goodmorning Shaq
gm :)
My favourite is fishcakes. About equal amounts of lightly steamed white fish and mashed potato. Add egg to bind and flour to get dryness/wetness ratio correct. Add Thai curry paste (especially one that has lemongrass) and it just brings it home. Make thin and shallow fry. Hell yeah.
Does the white fish need to be partly or fully cooked through initially? I don't know how to steam it / don't think we have the equipment to do it ha ha
@@Metallijosh100 I usually go fully cooked but if it's not quite there it doesn't matter as it's about to get deep fried. I guess you could gently boil it instead, you'd just need a good/fine strainer
Fry a couple teaspoons in olive oil, add lemon zest, deglaze with vodka, add pasta water, add pasta, emulsify into a creamy sauce, add parmigiano and basil
I love how much information you condense into such a short bit of time. Amazing.
I LOVE U SHAQ U BLOODY LEGEND MUCH LOVE FROM AUSTRALIA
cheers heaps m8
Shaq. Great video. I've had homemade curry paste, but I've never actually made it my self. I'll give it a go.
Another AMAZING use is Mac & cheese. I added red curry paste to my cheese sauce a few years ago for Thanksgiving and it was an absolute success.
It added a nice spicy kick and gave the Mac some depth. Highly recommend for this Thanksgiving!
Shut up, that sounds amazing 🤤
@@IjeomaThePlantMama yes! Last year I did 2 mac's. 1 w red curry paste (store bought) and a jalapeno mac. Our family likes it spicy 🔥
I used this video for inspiration for some Thai chicken meatballs, where I added fresh curry paste to the meatballs before rolling them up, searing and then cooking in a coconut red curry. It came out absolutely fantastic! Thanks for the recommendation and idea!
Holy moly you went off in this one. Thank you for all the incredible ideas!
Fabulous advice! I’ve had a container of red Thai curry paste in my fridge for awhile. Time to use it!
Something about your videos always inspire me to do whatever you talk about. Love them all!
Your cooking tips are very helpful, one of the best cooking channels on RUclips!
I can always feel my mind expanding while watching your videos
Totally. I haven't made my own curry paste yet, but I like Mae Ploy yellow curry paste so much that I always sneak a bite when I use it. It comes in a fairly large tub with the curry in a plastic bag inside (so you have to cut the corner and squeeze it out).
Every video by this guy slaps so hard! Dudes got me ready to buy AG1 today just cause I trust him so thoroughly!
You saved me with the upload as I had curry paste lying around. (Of course I made a coconut milk curry with it yesterday). I am going to try out your recipe and make some zucchini lentil fritters with curry paste. Thank you.
Just swining by a half year later to say the chicken + [fatty medium] + [herb and spice blend] has saved my weeknights. It's such a great modular. As someone who eats greek yogurt daily. I've dabbled with curry paste, old bay, gochujang, garam masala, and an adovada spice mix, all of which have made chicken thighs divine, and can even save an overcooked chicken breast.
Tl;dr: this is so far the most impactful video on my day-to-day cooking
Great modular…what?
This is brilliant! Thank you for sharing these ideas. I may have to finally start making my own curry paste now.
Dude this was a fantastic video, well done!
What would happen if you added curry mix to shrimp stock 🤔
dam shawty OKAY
And what if you flavored it with pineapple vinegar
Thank you for this video! I've been feeling the same way about gochujang lately, very excited to apply the same ideas with curry paste
Nice one!
Take this curry paste marinated chicken thighs, preferably with yogurt.
Add a tbsp each corn and rice flour each per lb for a pancake batter consistency after marination.
Deep fry.
Deep fry scallions - quick dip
Take some of that oil and fry more curry paste in small pan at buffalo sauce consistency.
Toss all of it together and enjoy.
The way you do ad’s is the best on the internet
Awesome advice and the shrimp toast thing blew my mind. I’m sure I ate something like that and just never considered what the hell it actually was. There’s a Thai cooking lady on RUclips who tested out loads of common curry pastes people can buy in the west and the one in the thumbnail was underwhelming. The one you made from scratch looks next level, but there are other store brands that are good in a pinch 👌
Curry Paste is also a super quick way to invoke crazy flavor into a stir fry with minimal prep work (even though, it's my favorite part)
Only man I watch the whole ad, you deserve the world KING
I see that thumbnail switch homie. Good vid.
doing whatever i can to salvage this 10/10 baby
this is my favourite type of content. love you, buddy!
this is the content missing on youtube. love it
Thanks for your videos, before I used to eat my food raw but you inspired me to cook.
thank you for giving advice to us with no foresight! Dinner time comes around faster and faster these days
another banger dude much love
Awesome video yet again!
Ah man, it's always a pleasure to jump onto RUclips and see a new Internet Shaquille video
:,)
Always so clever & useful
you are the best youtuber and i appreciate everything you do
thank u :)
That shrimp toast looks amazing, thank you for sharing. Man I have used curry paste for ages never considered that recipe.
wow that shrimp toast! this is the first time in a lonnnngg time that ive seen a recipe on youtube that i havent heard of before
Try the Mae Ploy curry paste. It’s a bit harder to find in store but Amazon has it. Best store bought curry pastes
I really needed this video. Its been a month since i got curry paste and i seriously run out of ideas of what to do with kt
My go to baked fish baste is curry paste mixed with lemon juice and parsley
Brilliant!
Absolutely! I also love Ethiopian Spice paste and Spice mixes from N Africa. Amazing how they can elevate the flavors of common ingredients.
Harissa is magical
@@jessl1934 Yes!! One of my favorites. Not time consuming and only a handful of ingredients and you have magic! Moroccan fish head soup with Harrisa is delicious! If I have Western company I don't tell them a fish head was involved 😂
Y E S, I got some berbere spice from an Ethiopian shop and mixed it into butter to make this stupid delicious compound butter. I was instructed to save it for a VERY special occasion roast chicken, the kind that will make a guy wanna put a ring on it after he tastes it.
On me. Not the chicken.
@@IjeomaThePlantMama That's awesome! Best wishes!
@@IjeomaThePlantMama berbere is so tasty. I used to season sweet potatoes for breakfast like every day for several years it was a DEEP obsession
Can you do a video on how to pick and maintain the lemon grass? I have a ton but I have no idea how to pick it.
Cubed red potatoes is my leftover curry go-to 👌👌👌
I make a lot of ceviche from salmon so I'm definitely trying this for my next poke bowl.
I love this channel
I love curry paste so I'll religiously consider this!
could you make a video on gochujang and doejang? Super long shelf life pastes for very reasonable price, full of flavor but I find myself not using them as much as I believe I could
conduit? this man is articulate 👍
You can also use it in pretty much any fried rice dish.
I randomly used Thai curry paste in a lentil soup last week with a ton of celery seed it all worked really well together. Anyway I'd never used curry paste outside of Thai curry
I actually love mixing a bit of mayo, natural peanut butter, curry paste, and lime.
I'll add chickpeas, peas, thinly slices cabbage, onion, carrot, and cilantro. Makes an amazing salad for lunch.
You could use egg m equal parts of each, or mix it up and mess about.
I love everything you do shaq
I also might be a bit drunk, but that doesn’t detract front the above
:,)
Haven't watched yet, but I'm saving this for later, because I have that exact jar from the thumbnail, with my other spices/sauces, still unopened, and I have no clue what to do with it
Make a beurre blanc and wisk in some thai curry paste at the end
Have the sauce with a nice piece of fish (e.g. salmon or trout), some greens and new potatoes.
Yowza
I love general videos like this that focus on being efficient, useful, and resourceful.
This man simply does not miss
A spoonful of curry paste or chutney into fried rice is one of my go-tos.
Thanks for the tip. I checked my bed and found an old bag of curry paste. I removed it and now I'm sleeping much better.
great video! great thumbnail!
Awesome video! Curry paste is also great for fish cookies, i thought you were going to make them with the shrimp/curry paste mixture but you took it to another level
Well now I need to try some curry paste
what is the wristwatch that you are wearing? it looks very nice :)
God, every netshaq video is objectively & subjectively a good use of my time
southeast asian cuisine needs more appreciation 😭 thank you shaq
What is that silicone-rimmed fish spatula you used in the "Fry an egg in it" section ~2:54?
One great use is making spiced black bean burgers. super easy and delicious.
tbh, any of the ideas here you could replace the meat with a vegetable protein and have a great time.
Wow I did not expect an Aly and Aj reference to come at the end of this video. 10/10
i gotta get into curry paste
The Thai restaurant I work at puts curry paste in the fried rice 😻
I thought curry paste is rough unless you cook it out a bit first (like tomato paste), so I’m surprised to hear about mixing it with mayo to make a sauce for fries.
Well done sir, we’ll done!
I mixed an egg and some red curry paste and fried it like an omelette to use as topping for nigiri.
ooooOOoooooOOo
Wooo! You're going down the Thai path!
what if you are cilentro adversed, is there enough in there to affect my taste buds?
If by sleeping on curry paste you mean I have so much of this specific brand from your thumbnail in my cubbard that I could make a bed and physically sleep on it, you got me.
...I never even conceived the idea that I could make my own curry paste
Dude, wonderful pull on lamb and tuna fish!!! I say that all the time and no one knows what I'm talking about lmao
I need to learn how to make massaman curry paste
I recommend frying the paste a little and letting it cool before making it a condiment
Excellent idea. Get some roasty notes from all that chili and garlic
Could you tell Athletic Greens to be available in Asia? I live in a Southeast Asian country.
Chili paste with ground meat is an A+ idea
loll aly & aj. 15 year old me was obsessed
In my experience, that lime zest is subtitutable with just any lime zest. Its lime leaf, and curry leaf used in other Thai dish thats hard to sub.
Also, shrimp paste and fish sauce is not 1:1 sub, shrimp paste had much deeper taste and stronger funk. As for galangal, imho you can even omit it entirely and most won't notice.
Coriander roots - garlic - white pepper is the must have base for Thai cuisine imho.
Thats just a thought.
I don't have a food processor and only a tiny mortar and pestle, so sadly I would only be able to make a tiny amount of curry paste at a time while the process is tiring and hard on my wrists (artritis). Otherwise I'd be cranking out fresh pastes non-stop!
