- How to record a singer/songwriter with two figure 8 microphones for good separation.
Figure 8 microphones are fantastic at rejecting signals on the off axis... the side/edge. Position the microphones so the null point (the side) is facing what you want the mic to ignore. You can see in the video the Coles 4038 front is facing the guitar and the edge is pointed at the singer's mouth. The U87 face is pointed at the singer's mouth while the edge is pointed at the guitar, effectively ignoring it.
Correct placement is crucial and a small move can make a big difference in isolation.
VOCAL - Neumann U87
GUITAR - Coles 4038
PREAMPS - Trident 80b
COMPRESSOR - Maletomp vari-mu
Trying this out at my next session. Thanks so much!
Right on! Let me know how it goes!
@@fremontrecording Will do brother!
amazing
Thank you so much!
That's pretty amazing! to hear the mics isolated. So much separation between the two. Might have to try this eventually.
Not all figure-8s are created equal. For example, the AKG 414 didn't have as much rejection as the U87 or the Coles 4038.
@@fremontrecording Good to know.
I love figure ribbon mics condenser mics in figure 8.
I'm interested in your Maletomp compressor, and the left-handed Gibson J-100 (?) bbeing used here.
The Maletomp vari-mu compressor is the most natural sounding compressor I've ever used. It's very organic. It can be pushed for amazing musical effect too! It's very forgiving and very fun to use.
