I work and climb for a WISP(DFW area). Done some cell work in the past also. Definitely prefer the WISP work over the cell work. Don't have to climb every single day. Not as young as I used to be, so I need breaks for my knees and back lol.
I used to do cell almost 20 years ago and it made it easier to do WISP. You are right, you don't have to climb as much and not as high (at least not here in Ohio).
I have a fear of heights , back in the day we used to truely free climb , only hooking off at the work site or for a rest when ascending or descending . During construction, when you have large sections with lose bolts , before guy wires are tightened , a nice little gust of wind…swinging and swaying around over 12 ft at 2000ft makes for an interesting work place. Climbing a mast up to 2000 ft used to take about 3 hours (good going) when the 2 point system came in it easily added another hour to that (up and down) upper body fatigue was an issue in the early days because we still tried to climb as fast and do the same work sometimes not getting back down until we’ll after dark. When the lanyard gets snagged or caught on something like a climbing peg when your lifting yourself up the sudden unexpected stop feels like someone has grabbed you and is trying to pull you down….it’s not a nice feeling. I’ve got a photo of an aeroplane flying underneath me around here somewhere. Fear keeps you safe.
damn bro, i literally saw this in my recomended and started watching and thinking to my self, this looks ALOT like st george (im from the area) . looked at the description and just comfirmed my suspicion. haha. im into these videos, crazy to see some one climbing a local tower.
Loved the video man, I've got a quick question for you. How easy is it to get into this line of work, can you join a company with no experience at all? What type of skills do I need to have before applying to a job as a tower tech?
I started with no experience. I'd recommend looking into local wisps. You can always pursue a tiger crew. The job title to look into is Tower Technician.
So I always wanted to know. After years of doing this. Cause clearly you have. Do you still get a rush cause. It just takes certain kind for this kind of job. Me on other hand 6 foot lader is my stop point lolz😂 I always wanted to know. If a person falls. All safety gear kicks in. Say person gets knocked out cold. How do you get the person down?
Everyone is different but I personally love every climb. I don't get a rush but feel at peace and in my element. We have an escape and rescue plan for every job and are trained to rescue an unconscious climber. The rescue must occur within 15 minutes to prevent blood from becoming toxic while hanging. A safety rope is attached above the victim and they are tethered to the rescuer who then cuts their lanyard and repels with them attached.
With each climb you get more comfortable a little higher. When I first started it was around 100, then it was around 200. Now it doesn't really bother me anymore. I have a couple towers where we have fiber to 400+. Just have to trust your gear and don't get in a hurry.
@@JacobHepworth Nice! I used to work for a carrier that partnered with Touchstone Energy Cooperative (local power Co'ops) for their customer base in rural areas. When I worked there they covered AZ, NM, TX, and IN, while they were starting to bridge into other states like OK, but anyway, I had to ask. I knew by the title given it was Ethernet being strung, it was more then likely a tower for unlicensed band radios.
What is the device you use that attaches to the steel cable? it looks like a Micro-traction or something similar but how something like that would work on a steel cable is beyond me
This is a lad-saf fall arrest device. It essentially slides along the cable. A lever tethers to the user and actuates during a fall. Once engaged, it locks up and prevents downward movement.

Good job at 14:06 i almost thought he was unclipped from the tower but he is on the decent line it liiks like lol
Great video.
Watch your fall factor!👍
Nobody here is going to know what you are talking about, but good shout nonetheless 👍👍
Nice work!
Great skills and work but those Cat5e connectors need protection until they are connected up to the equipment at that height?
They are covered with plastic bags, held by electrical tape. We mounted radios and used these cables the next day.

Very interesting! Always wondered how they did that. Very appreciated you took the time to reply. Thanks 🍺😉👍

Limping definitely take time to get used to, free climbing trees I used to be scared 10feet but now 50+ feet or higher no worries
There's not enough money to get me up there
My kind of tower climb! Ubiquiti radios, or Canopy (Cambium)?
What WISP?
Both actually! This run was for a few Cambium 450m. I work for InfoWest, based out of St George Utah.

Whats the height of that Tower?
Good job gents
Wait. Cat 5e in 2023??!! Are you installing a Commodore 64 at the top of the pole?

Would you be allowed to base from top get down quickly?
How many feet up did you go?
Is it true you guys makes less than 60k a year doing this?
Unfortunately, yes

Is that airspan / mimosa antenna's?
most likely those at the top of the tower are cambium, InfoWest uses a mix of Ubiquiti and what seems to be Cambium 5Ghz gear. (im from the area)
Those were 450m from cambium
Noooooooo way. 😮😮😮
There's no way on earth I could possible do that. I'm sorry.
You ever nervous the bolts are gonna snap ?
Yes and no. We visually inspect towers before a climb and will decommission one that becomes unsafe.
@Jacob Hepworth thanks for getting back to me. Do you inspect with a drone or just inspect as you climb. Thanks man. Stay safe
where was this?
Sand Hollow. Just finished building this tower. It's 60 feet
My feet can't take a tower. I've tried all kinds of shoes. Best was combat boots, but they are heavy. I'm too old, ha!

Id say about 50 to 60 feet
