Damn, this is why I never look up clarinet players on youtube. I always end up feeling like shit. I've been playing for 9 years and watching this, I feel like I haven't done shit....

@AlanTubeViewer Might I might remind everybody that he's 14? Even many clarinetists don't seem to realize how difficult this piece is to play correctly. I think you're wrong in criticizing his tone. Brahms should be played with a round and soft tone. Poulenc on the other hand is dry and bright. French. It is said that only French musicians can play French music because they have a "French sensibility" and here, I think Michael pulls it off quite well. It's supposed to sound rushed and frantic.

@chocotastic His age is not a alibi because he's been playing for many years. Being a good technician does not mean that you fully master the piece nor integrate its spirit. Take Lang Lang on the piano and see how he really lives the pieces from deep inside. I hope Han Kim's maturity in this field will eventually grow. And don't confound playing frantically and delivering a dry sonority : you can play rush and still have a soft tone. Btw I'm French and I can play this piece too ;-)

Yeah...I played this for juries last semester. At 0:34...the music was changed. Tough fingering combinations there, and hard to make clean. In this recording...it is incorrect.
