    🌞 WHO AM I:
I'm Daniel Barnett, an employment law and HR barrister. I advise and represent clients in employment tribunal litigation. I have my main barrister website (www.danielbarne...) and work out of a set of Chambers in London (www.outertemple...). I have a weekly podcast (go.danielbarne...) and am often asked to speak on the national and international legal and HR lecture circuits. I’ve written about twenty legal textbooks (the main one is www.employmentl...) and run a membership club for smart, ambitious HR Professionals (www.hrinnercirc...). I present the legal hour on LBC Radio (www.lbc.co.uk), the UK’s leading commercial talk radio station with an audience of 3.1m listeners, every Saturday night at 9pm. I’m also a bit of a theatre nerd, and review theatre shows for Counsel magazine.

As usual Daniel is of little help. He can raise a formal complaint with BT. If he is not happy with the outcome, he can refer the matter to the Financial Ombudsman on the grounds that the default notice was issued unfairly and also report this matter to the Communications Ombudsman,

They owe the money, its nothing to do with the new owners of the property.
Your broadband is your service, you tell them that you are moving and take it with you (if its serviceable at your new property) or you pay any cancellations costs if a minimum term still exists.
How do you pay broadband for 3 years without knowing? Did they not take broadband at the new property? Most companies will keep increasing (especially the one mentioned) every year so they must have been shocked to see a bill increase by substantial amounts every year!
They need to pray a kind soul on the call centre picks up as its entirely his fault but he should press the fsct he paid for a service he never used all those years.

Yes, you can’t go cancelling direct debits when there is a contract exists. It’s a missed payments and treated as such. In a job long time ago, I was responsible for creating credit agency files and that business was incapable of producing accurate credit history for accounts. So it’s easy to have mistakes shown.

That’s not true though you’ve combined two separate things into one, you CAN cancel a direct debit during a contract provided you make the PAYMENT on time.
I’m with virgin media and I can cancel my direct debit and pay manually if I wish as long as I pay on time.
You’re automatically assuming that if you don’t have a direct debit you don’t pay which isn’t true. I used to pay my phone bill by credit card becuase I could get cash back and I have a perfect credit file and just got a mortgage
It would have been fine for the caller to cancel the direct debit as long as he made the payment which he didn’t do, it’s the payment which is the issue not the direct debit

@@Ll-ij2jh That's a bit pedantic I think it's implied that he wouldn't pay another way. Yes of course you can cancel and pay another way it's obvious. It's like saying you cant walk into a bar order a drink and leave without paying...Well you might have opened up a tab or left a card on file then it's ok.

@@Ll-ij2jhhe didn’t, he just cancelled and never made any attempt to pay. Can’t do that, it’s what he said , I said and Daniel confirmed. He should have cancelled properly allowed them to stop taking money. I agree you can switch methods etc but that’s not what he explained, he thought he could bypass all the hassle and cancel it.

@@coderider3022 Yeah I agree but that’s not what you said, you said if you cancel a direct debit it’s a missed payment when that’s not the case

@@googleuser8740 Not really given this is a legal show and the OP combined two separate issues into one, if Daniel was speaking he’d do exactly the same
