Glad you like them! Even though this video was recorded a few months ago, I still haven't got around to having some centre cap decals made up. Maybe it'll happen at some point. But there are many things more pressing with this car first! :)
I can't believe how good those wheels look. When you were polishing the car in the last video I kept thinking those old wheels don't look right. Well you have nailed it ! The car looks fantastic.
I was hoping they'd be a surreal angle, just like in the thumbnail, flat black with question marks! As hilarious a gimmick that might be, it's a right jazzy choice you've made. Maybe do a few cardboard/plastic wheel covers for a gag reveal, either a bait and switch or maybe an April fool's gag.
Wheels and centers look fab, really sets off the deep red, can't wait to see a picture with the height adjusted. (I have a light gold car with bronze alloys.)
Very nice - I would agree about trying to get some AR centre cap decals sourced or made up custom. Also I think that the center caps are a bit tall/thick tbh - I wonder if there are slimmer versions that could be used (maybe from a 90s Mini?)
Thanks Matt! They wouldn’t fit, though. Austin and Rover Metros are different cars. Very few components were carried over, and the hubs are totally different, with different stud patterns.
I think you are lucky they machined the centre bore large enough to fit the Metro, most Mini alloy wheels and the stock steel Mini wheels don't have a centre bore large enough to fit. It also also surprising just how wide those 145 tyres look. Looks good.
hi thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'm from italy and i need change my old metric wheels. Could you tell me the specification of your minilite gold wheels? Specially the offset...thank you
Useful info as I've just bought a 1987 metro automatic myself, its in basically original condition so still has the 160/65 r315 tyres on it (its been laid up a long time only 15000 miles on it) so I have to get some 12 or 13" wheels on it somehow. I can see the 101.6mm (4") PCD but the offset seems to vary on various forums as to whats right. I'll go with 31mm offset minilites. Various tyre converter calcs show 155/70x12 or 165/60x13 as equivalent size though, most confusing...is 145/70x12 closer to what the r315 used to be?
Love your face when you admire them at the end of the vid! Definitely go for custom AR centre caps, they would be very neat. Also, what about changing the door decals from silver to gold, to tie it all together...?
With the recent paint restoration and those new wheels, she's a right little stunner, mate! Excellent work....and whatever you are in debt for in the case of the wheels and tyres, I reckon it was worth it. She is one very smart little car, looks way better with the rubber bump strips removed and I totally agree with your decision to leave the silver Metro decals on the lower half of the doors. If you really want to make that swage line where the bump stops were stand out, you could run a single thin pinstripe along it in either gold (to tie in with the alloys) or a bright red. I'd be on the fence about that one because I like the 'clean' look too, but in other ways, it would add another level of uniqueness and 'pop' to her profile. Maybe mock it up in Photoshop or similar if it gets you thinking..... The Nankangs are a very sticky tyre - good in wet as well as dry. I've run various Nankangs for about 10 years on different vehicles and the tyres have saved me a few times on a greasy surface and on one car in particular - a 2004 Holden (Vauxhall in your lexicon) SV6 with 190kW under the bonnet - they saved me several times during encounters with small patches of black ice on winding roads. I currently have them on my Stag and my 2500S, along with my daughter's Mazda 3. All cars I have had them on feel so much more sure-footed and comfortable, so I reckon you're going to enjoy driving Melody that much more as a result. The new tyres also look much more in proportion to the car too....although you will lose a few legs at the top end as a result, but at the same time, she will be quicker on the take-off and better suited to her gearing. One should never scrimp on the cost of tyres in my opinion - there are only four small patches of rubber that keep you in contact with the road at any one time and you want those patches to do what they can to keep you there. The Nankangs are a good all-rounder in that regard - good tyre for a good price. I look forward to seeing what you have in store for her next! All the best
Looking fine! Been thinking about getting some wheels like that for my K10 Micra. I'm just very puzzled about offset and what the differences are, and why they matter.
Looks good Ed, OEM mk1 metro wheels were 135R12 or 155/70 R12 Interestingly you have same 6R4 sticker in the windo I had on my first MG in 85! I was about your age then Metro tyres are a bit of a nightmare, I have a late metro turbo which needs tyres but the correct 185/55 r13s are no longer available. Apparently 175/60r13s fit but are very close to radius arms
Nice ! It is always fun, to do some mild modifications. I’ve had the E28 for 5,5 years now, and I am on my 3rd set of wheels. It started out on metric alloys, which I sold to a purist, which I’m not, obviously ..😁 I wanted modern reliable tires, so I went for 7.5 x 16 wheels from an E38, afterwards I switched again to 8 x 16 cross spoke wheels, again from an E38. It looks and handles way better now, Enjoy the new wheels Edward !
Hi Forever - had my E28 for 28 years now, changed the original 390 metrics for Alpina 14" a few years back but always fancied something a bit bigger, 8 series cross-spoke look great too. Sourcing new centre caps for either will be like rocking horse poo though 😀.
Melody is looking a lot better Ed with the new hoops fitted. I was thinking about the hub cover labels, maybe have some made with 'T-C' with a red back ground for the Twin-Cam channel? Or maybe just 'ED'. The more I watch these videos the more I miss my old MKII 1.3L as the fond memories flood back from more than 23 years ago.
Gold wheels on a red car look excellent. I love nice wheels, but I usually don’t like aftermarket designs and stick with OEM wheels, though Minilites are classic and a good choice for your Metro. I had to laugh when you said you have to watch offset because the wrong offset may look odd! Hmm that one reason. The wrong offset may be dangerous, they also may not fit without spacers and it’s best to avoid spacers as much as possible.
I liked the Cheesegrater alloys, but I think they were only metric TD size (but Imperial on the Maestro for some reason 🤷♀️) And the ones on my Maestro were a right pain to clean in between the ribs. I have the ubiquitous minilights on my Midget. Seems like they’re the Pepperpot cliche of the Midget world 🙄 so I’m on the lookout for something different - Allycats or Revolution 4 Spokes if I can find them in the right size.
Great to see a happy and proud man, looking forward to seeing more progress 👍 Msg me I will do the Austin rover covers for the caps you have if it helps
Fantastic choice there! I can really relate to your point about Pepper pots on metros being cliched . I have an 85 mini with minilites on it and i really want to change them out for some thing else as every mini I see has them on. I was thinking metro pepper pots. Though i did put Watanabe replica wheels on my 80's Toyota Starlet so i may be going abit cliched there haha.
Ooh I’m not sure on that one. I didn’t want a full gold wheel because I thought it would be too loud, so I’m not sure whether gold decals would just look tacky?
The wheels have a silver rim, so either silver or gold would look good on the decals. As there’s nothing wrong with the silver ones, I’d leave them as they are.
If you lowered the car after fitting different sized tyres don't you have to have the tracking re-set? I honestly don't know... but I was told when altering ride height it's something to do.
Nice wheels, back in the day i had a 5 series bmw i found out the hard way this car was fitted with metric wheels and tyres the tyres were almost unattainable ended up buying a full set of wheels and tyres from a later bmw at some cost who would have thought?
Thank you for all your most generous donations Peter, it means an incredible amount to me. I'm sorry I haven't seen them all in good time. The RUclips Studio app doesn't show super chats for some reason, but now I'm on my PC, I'm working my way through :)
Dark red paint and gold wheels is a reminder of late ‘60s/early ‘70s Ferrari racing cars. Which can only be A GOOD THING!
As a former Mk 1 Metro owner, I fully approve of your wheel choice. Looks fantastic!
Melody looks fantastic with the new wheels... great choice Ed. I like the idea of AR centre caps too.
Glad you like them!
Even though this video was recorded a few months ago, I still haven't got around to having some centre cap decals made up. Maybe it'll happen at some point. But there are many things more pressing with this car first! :)
As a disabled person who can't drive, I love watching your ideas and those gold wheels really suit the red. Red really brings the gold out.
They look really nice. You can't go wrong with a minilite. The correct tyres look a lot better too.
I would now swap that silver body stripe to a matching gold stripe.
With the rubbing strips removed, paint renovation and the new wheels, Melody looks fab. You made a great choice. 👌
Keep up the good work Ed, one day it would be nice to see you on TV!
Absolutely, positively, completely... YES!!! The perfect choice for your car. Enjoy!!!
Gold center wheels for the win! Definitely go with an Austin logo roundel for the center cap
I can't believe how good those wheels look. When you were polishing the car in the last video I kept thinking those old wheels don't look right. Well you have nailed it ! The car looks fantastic.
Good choice,I have silver ones on mine, but as my metro is met. Brown,I think gold will look better. Your metro is looking great by the way.
Haha, they look absolutely fantastic. An inspired choice!
😎 Perfect wheels for the car! Been after a set the same for my Merlin Kit Car for a while!
Great choice 😊
Great choice, Ed, they look stunning and the smaller tyres really suit the car. 👍
Very nice racy alloys🏎. This Targa Red Metro is coming along absolutely tremendously. Much approved.👍Keep up the good work Ed.
Great choice Ed the mini lites look fab changes the whole aspect of the car. Don’t forget the locking wheel nuts though!! 👍🏻
Great choice - I think they look fantastic!!
As a former MG Metro owner back in the 80s 🤔🤔 good choice Ed, they look great on Melody and your right about red & gold.
I think they look cool and there is noting wrong about the ride height to my eye.
Very nice - I would agree about trying to get some AR centre cap decals sourced or made up custom. Also I think that the center caps are a bit tall/thick tbh - I wonder if there are slimmer versions that could be used (maybe from a 90s Mini?)
The wheels look great! Gold and red do work well together.
I was anticipating a set of post 1990 Metro steelies like Melvin's.
Thanks Matt!
They wouldn’t fit, though. Austin and Rover Metros are different cars.
Very few components were carried over, and the hubs are totally different, with different stud patterns.
Excellent choice, really suit the car! I want gold wheels now.
Love the Gold Wheels. They really compliment the paint. Personally, I would have gone for the 13inch Latis cross spokes you've shown, painted in gold.
Specially the offset...thank you
Wheely good looking wheels 😃,. How about fitting a K&N air filter to enhance the oomph!
Maybe get some locking wheel nuts too for peace of mind 😉
Excellent choice! Love gold minilites have been thinking a lot about putting some on my 65 Herald 12/50; so timing of this video couldn’t be better.
Great choice, looks fab
Looking great. Agree would add to the look to lower slightly 👍
As an American, I'm not familiar with these cars. But I like it. And good choice with the wheels. I wouldn't have chosen gold. But it works well
Useful info as I've just bought a 1987 metro automatic myself, its in basically original condition so still has the 160/65 r315 tyres on it (its been laid up a long time only 15000 miles on it) so I have to get some 12 or 13" wheels on it somehow. Also, what about changing the door decals from silver to gold, to tie it all together...?
What tyre pressures are you using for the new set of front & back tyres, and what is the size of the spare tyre - is it also a 145/70R12 as well?
My favourite was cheese 🧀 grater wheels on the mg metro but you made the right Choicest on the mini light wheels 👍
I’d agree. The cheesegraters are my favourite too, but they’re metric.
I never knew that but they look nice like the Pepperpot Mini light etc etc wheels at that time was so cool
😎👍
Iv got black MAMBA wheels on my mini They look really nice
They look awesome on Melody. It surely transform the look of the car and....who dont adore Minilites🤣
Great Choice 👍, stunning look , better tyres ! ; who cares what anyone else thinks - your Choice!! . NICE work 👏 👌
Yeh those new wheels look great on the car, suits it perfectly 👍

@Twin-Cam Good idea for a vid here, Ed. Good question Richard. Lorra, lorra confusion over offsets and PCDs...
@@Mancozeb100 I understand PCD, centre bore, and wheel & tyre width & diameter. But when offset and scrub radius are mentioned, I am completely lost.
Looks good Ed, OEM mk1 metro wheels were 135R12 or 155/70 R12

Mine came with excellent Center caps.
Only had to change the BMW logos for new ones.
I wouldn't normally consider gold, but they do look good on this car against the red

I agree with you on the red and gold, a little lower should look good................I think!
The gold is just perfect.
ed, that's a great choice and colour, love it mate!
Excellent choice 👌
Nice touch id have gone with black and silver rim myself but its very subjective good idea.
They look amazing mate Gold and red always go well.

Keep up the amazing work

Did you wirebrush the hubs/drums of rust and apply some Copper-Slip to the contact surface of the alloy wheels..?
I didn’t bother. The wheels come off so often anyway for cleaning/maintenance it would just be a waste of time.
Wheels and tyres look Amazing, Ed! Inspired choice!
Perfect choice, love the gold!
Lowering the ride will improve the look, great job. 😊
I agree gold and red is a good combination. Just like the formula one gold leaf racing team from the sixties.
You know what would be the icing on the cake? Those side decals reproduced in gold. That would look awesome!
Looking snazzy. Love the Metro. Need to get me one.
Those lattice alloys are the ones I was talking about when I commented ages ago 😊😊
If you lowered the car after fitting different sized tyres don't you have to have the tracking re-set? I honestly don't know... but I was told when altering ride height it's something to do.
They actually look great
Looks good Ed. All in favour of something a bit different to everyone else.
Looks fantastic and certainly suits those wheels
Nice choice. It's your car do as you please. , just ignore the haters.
Looks great.
Nice one Ed..Great choice.. 👍👍
Do they do those wheels for R56 Minis? They would look great on my BRG Cooper.
Wheels look really cool and suit the car.
Hi Ed
Melody wearing ‘bling’ ! Who would have thought it…..
Mike
😜
Looking good, Ed!
Wheels look great.
Those wheels really suit the car, it looks great 👍
The wheels look very nice.
The wheels look amazing.
That's a cool little car, love the wheels
Nice gold Minilites Ed suit Melody very well 😎😎😎😎
They look great Ed!
i had white 8 spoke weller steel wheels on mine and i loved them my car was also white
not going to lie, they look good
Nice wheels, back in the day i had a 5 series bmw i found out the hard way this car was fitted with metric wheels and tyres the tyres were almost unattainable ended up buying a full set of wheels and tyres from a later bmw at some cost who would have thought?
They do look ace!
Will the new wheels affect what you do with the decals? Perhaps the gold theme will continue?
Those wheels look epic 🙂
If you're happy then that's all that matters.👍
More cars need gold wheels I think. Gold wheels are always just so cool.
Melody has been pimped 😁
I think they look mint mate
Love em
Oooh yes!!
Let me know when your want a tune up to give it some ‘go’ to go with the ‘show!’
I would had gone with black alley cats myself. But it's your motor
Thanks!
Thank you for all your most generous donations Peter, it means an incredible amount to me.

All you need now is a LCB and a decent performance exhaust
There might be a bit more than that on the way 👀
