Part of the reason i liked i, tonya is that it depicted how poverty can look especially if youre surrounded by people with wealth. Its difficult to break out of family patterns.
Ryan Murphy is such a weirdo, so disrespectful to both the Menendez brothers and all of Dahmer's victims. He should be ashamed and i hate how ppl just eat it up- no critical thought at all. Thanks for this video.
to make a crime series and not properly inform and compensate the victim's families is repulsive and makes you a terrible person. but to do it AGAIN??? diabolical. ryan murphy you are going to hell what is wrong with you
@@LilShopofAli his complete apathy is mind-boggling to me. like you're dealing with stories of serial murder, cannibalism, child sexual abuse and doing it with zero empathy? hows that gonna work? he needs to stop writing
Of course Jeff Galooly would deny the abuse. No one is eager to admit that they harmed another human being and Lavona was toxic and narcissistic. She claims she was making Tonya strong but she ignored the fact that Tonya needed her to love her
I watched one of the made for tv movies about the Menendez brothers back when it came out. I definitely remember the public perception of the brothers, though I somehow avoided getting too invested in any belief about most cases like this one. I think there’s a real problem with the criminal justice system (propped up by the media) putting incomplete, unempathetic stories out for public consumption. I can’t really watch Murphy’s work anymore because he just seems so irresponsible with people. Netflix needs to stop letting him do these shows without contacting the people involved. It’s gross.
I wonder if maybe they didnt include things like the gang🍇 because Tonya didnt want them. It may seem weird but if someone made a biopic for me there are certain traumas that i wouldnt want depicted at all while there are others equally as bad that i would want included that may confuse others
Brilliant as always! Really interesting thoughts about the weird dynamic between real life and a compelling story. Also, Ryan Murphy is such a weird, off-putting creator. Off to watch The Temptations now!
I remember in the 90s, Tonya was painted as a villain but given what we know about her today, I have a lot of sympathy for her. I remember that line where she claims in the movie that she and Nancy had been friends and sometimes roommates on the road. Do we know what the actual relationship was between her and Nancy before the attack?
your commentary is always so thought provoking and compelling!! i just recently found your channel and can’t get enough of it, keep up the good work!!!
Side note: LORD Javier Bardem is hot. Seriously though, is there no one we can call on about Ryan’s obsession with using real people in his weird little shows?
Great video it’s crazy I was thinking of i, Tonya when watching monsters bc I felt the film did a much better at exactly what monsters wanted to do, as someone who done research on the Menéndez brothers since I was a kid, I was really disappointed by this series particularly the portrayal of Erik being gay, the brothers being in a incestous relationship and the ending implying that they truly did for money and the abuse was fabricated the acting from cooper knoch and Javier Bardem were the standouts to me for sure and I respect cooper’s activism for the brothers but overall the show was a miss, but what really made me feel disgusted by the show was Ryan Murphy’s comments in response to the Menendez family justified disapproval of the series, so tone deaf, disgusting and disrespectful. I feel Ryan is acting like this bc he thought since the first season of monsters was a blockbuster award winning success, he can get away with this, however the tides are changing, the ratings for this season have declined following its premise and it has given some of the worst critical reviews of Ryan’s career, in addition many celebrities have publicly shown support to the brothers, majority of these celebrities are voting members of award shows like the Emmy’s and SAGs, the backlash and controversy have completely overshadowed the show, where as the first season with Dahmer it enhanced the show success, I can see monsters being snubbed from the upcoming award season and I feel that will be the moment Ryan learn from his lesson,
Regarding not showing the rape that Tonya suffered, I could understand if Tonya did not want that shown. That could be retraumatizing for her and she does want to be vulnerable again for an audience to see. Maybe showing the abuse is suffered is as close as she was willing to show. So do not blame the movie for showing graphic scenes of rape. And as for making some of it into a joke, people do use dark humor to cope. The movie using that may not be mocking her but just using dark humor to get a state of her mind.
I don't necessarily need a "grape" scene or anything, I don't think that would've been better. It should have been mentioned at the very least. I feel like the movie downplays how abusive he was and wants us to feel sorry for him. Like I can't get over that scene where he shoots her, and they just start playing this love ballad. I love the movie, but that was just a bit weird to me. I don't have a problem with dark humor, in fact I love dark humor, but I think the way it shows DV while not showing us Tonya's reaction to it and constantly portraying her as this tough badass, doesn't help those moments. It's like the movie didn't want to show her being too much of a victim.
@@LilShopofAli i see what you mean now. I just misunderstood what you meant at first. And agree that it is odd when you add comedy where it doesn’t need to be. Topics like “grape” and DV should be taken seriously and if dark humor is used, it should be written as the character using it as a coping mechanism or something. But do see what you mean. Sorry for misunderstanding.
I’m actually scared that Ryan Murphy is going to be portraying the Ed Gein story for his next season of Monster. Being that he chose Charlie Hunnam to play Ed Gein, I can already see people starting to objectify and “thirst” over him just because it’s Charlie Hunnam who is playing him. What makes me less excited to watch anything that Ryan Murphy puts out is how he glamorizes and eroticizes the horrible things that happens to the actual victims. Safe to say, I’ll be missing out on any future Ryan Murphy projects.
I stopped liking biopics after the blindside lol the Wendy Williams Aaliyah movie made me livid lol I feel like casting directors are not getting paid enough
the biopic movie/series ethics are such an interest of mine, im so happy i found this channel (with a great name to boot!) im really curious to what caused this new wave of empathy for serial killers that started the series and movie trend. like ryan murphy is probably the main culprit but i wonder if the rise of true crime isnt also part of it. i think that it arises questions about how empathy works (and who is on the giving and receiving ends of that empathy) in these sorts of grisly cases. we want to understand and even to sympathize with the killers, but so often this happens by taking the focus away from the victims. here in argentina we got a really interesting example with the movie "el angel". it feels like an artsier ryan murphy movie but the case is very real, the killer is very much alive and jailed, and his very grisly crimes (involving r*pe and child murder) were mostly ignored to show his beginning as a burglar and his homoerotic relationship with a partner in crime (one which the real life killer denies). i think its a very good movie that takes advantage of the fact it is a well known story by people from a certain age, but the fact that it omits what really made him a monster and the ways it popularized the "character" for people to ship and make fan edits of, its really toeing an ethical line i feel like
The whole reason this show even got made is cuz people were makin thirst trap edits of the Menendez’s on TikTok. He’s tryin to take credit for somethin other people did that he never woulda been able to get this project greenlit without. He also is constantly tryin to give his audience weird boners and then point the finger at them accusingly on some “who’s the reeeeeal monster” shit and it’s like.. it’s you, Ryan. It’s you.
