How disgusting. The fact that he was forced to remove his cultural attire is just atrocious. The ta’ovala does not only represent the earth being tied around his waist but is also a significant item passed down by our ancestors after generations; until modern days. People should be able to express their culture where ever they go, weather it’s through performance, appearance wise etc.

It is a lack of understanding of cultures. How it is explained on the News isn’t correct. Wearing a Ta’ovala is our formal attire to an event or celebration. It is about respect! As a Tongan, you cannot attend a formal function unless you’re wearing one and especially when there’s a Royalty present. Not wearing one is viewed as being naked or disrespectful! Hence why Tongans wear Ta’ovala to Church, celebrations of any achievement such as Graduation, weddings and even to funerals.
It is quite important for schools to recognise cultures, as it defined each ones identity.

Why do we Polynesians feel we have the right to impose our culture on others? This reminds me of a Samoan dude here in Hawaii, who thinks he can build his traditional Samoan hut anywhere on Oahu island because it’s his culture. No he can’t, and neither should we disrespect someone else’s culture - like the school’s graduation dress code.

Yeah, they should banned cultural wear and just keep the simple graduation wear that's provided so that all graduates look equal to each other, that way nobody's hogging any kind of attention towards another, unless you're elsewhere where there's no diversity like your own country.

Um idk what you thinking, but just cause a person is proud of their culture and wants to represent and be a romodel to their younger siblings, doesn't mean he's doing to much. And don't mock people for being proud of where they come from especially when they're thousands of miles away from home.

That is wrongful to ask of that as it’s discrimination and an easy win on a lawsuit if his family went that route. On a side note, Tongans do too much with grads, chips and cookie Kahoas come on makes it look like y’all don’t ever have snacks in your life and then bringing a fahu and having them sit on the Tongan mat on school grounds or parking lot?!?! That shit is embarrassing keep that at home or in your own setting that’s being extra with all that hierarchy foot stool crap we in the 20th century in a western culture all that stuff isn’t realistic and it’s stupidity
