You gotta admire how prolific this guy's work is. Not only has he done traps for a random Cenetral American tribe, but for the ancient Egyptians, *and* some random pirates holed up in Astoria, Oregon? Can you imagine the frequent flyer miles?

I saw this film in a theater on opening weekend in 1981. All I knew was that Spielberg had directed it and it was some kind of adventure film. To say I was blown away by the opening would be an understatement. I remember thinking, “This is what most movies would use as their grand finale.”
True story: My wife was out of town, so I took my two little girls to see it. Heh. In the actual grand finale, when faces started to melt, I reached around each of them and covered their eyes. The older one, Jacqui age 5, kept trying (unsuccessfully) to pull my hand down. After the movie, she let me know that she was mad at me for having done that. So when my wife got back into town, all four of us went to see us together, and I let Jacqui watch the faces melt and head explode. After the movie, she said to me in a quiet voice, “I wish you had covered up my eyes again.” 🤣👍❤️

You seem confused, Hunter, so I'll kindly explain what you're seeing here. These "action figures" are not actually alive, but they are being moved around by unseen people to give the *illusion* of life. This is a tool for storytelling, or medium, called *"animation."* Specifically, it is *stop-motion*, a technique that predates the hand-drawn animation that Disney is known for. It is highly underused these days because of all the work that it requires, but it is storytelling nonetheless. *Storytelling* is the act of relaying a series of events for entertainment purposes. Therefore, it requires plot, characterization, consistency, and logic so that we thinking individuals can be invested and not get bored with it.
To summarize... we're no longer cavemen watching dancing shadows. Our brains have expanded, so we need to think about what we're looking at, because denying analysis essentially makes us dumber.

Looking back on this sketch, I think this is one of the more light hearted sketches (minus the dead worker) from the show in terms of it not being mean spirited or dark. It feels more like someone who really loved Raiders Of The Lost Ark, but was more interested in knowing how and why the Bobby traps were created. Not to mention it ends on a good note foreshadowing how these traps will be talked about for generations to come^w^.
