Jason Williams: The Man Known as “White Chocolate” was Touted as THE NEXT PETE MARAVICH | FPP

  • He possessed rare creativity on the court, the same creativity that guys like Magic Johnson or the player he was often compared to, Pete Maravich possessed. He was a star at DuPont High School where he partnered with a future hall of famer in another sport as he and Randy Moss dominated West Virginia state basketball. His college career was not your usual as he rescinded a commitment then played a year at Marshall before following his coach Billy Donovan and playing one year for the Florida Gators. But this year was cut short due to Marijuana offences. But Williams would still find himself picked early in the 1999 NBA draft and joining a Sacramento Kings team featuring Chris Webber, Vlade Divac and Peja Stojakovic. Williams quickly became one of the most popular players in the league with his incredible dribbling and flashy passes. The Kings were getting better, but for as fun as Williams was, his play resulted in a lot of empty possessions, so he would shipped to the Memphis Grizzlies for Mike Bibby. In Memphis he would team with Pau Gasol, Mike Miller and Shane Battier, but the most important pairing came during his second season with the Grizzlies, when Hubie Brown was hired who held Williams accountable for his reckless play which resulted in Williams reeling it in and becoming a more traditional floor general, but he retained his flair when he could and took it to Miami, where he joined forces with Shaquille O’Neal and Dwyane Wade and helped the Heat win the 2006 NBA Championship. This would be the highlight of his career, as the Heat would implode and he would start to break down, he would have one more great year as a backup in Orlando, but finished his career after 12 years. He wasn’t the best point guard by any means, but he was one of the most exciting and entertaining and showed growth and maturity throughout his time in the league and Jason “White Chocolate” Willliams’ impact can never be forgotten.

Agree. He would shoot a 3 with like 20 seconds to go on the 24 shot clock all the time and shoot like 3-14 with 8 turnovers but then would make a ESPN highlight reel pass later in the game.

Jason Williams aka White Chocolate was ahead of his time when he played at Florida and the NBA. We don’t give him enough credit for his court vision and his passing skills and ability and a flashy point guard. He played with the likes of Shaq and D-Wade with the Heat.

Salute to Jason Williams was def ahead of his time entertaining and A solid Basketball Player. Turnovers and missed shots are part of basketball, Coaches did not want to give him the keys and just enjoy the ride. ( Hating they want the so called play the right way,) Fast Forward and players now play with a fast pace throwing up 3 point shots / shots early in the shot clock. ( Go Figure) I was happy to see him get a ring with the Heat!!!!
