I have three or four reverb tanks and they all have that sticker. Also, Milton Wisconsin is about 15 miles from where I live. I wonder if any of the "beautiful girls" that made these tanks back in the day are still living around here?
I recently bought a Peavey Backstage Plus and that’s the exact same reverb tank it comes with. Amazing little SS amp that takes pedals wells and punches above its size. the reverb is indeed quirky & very spacey but it’s functional even for being in a piece of inexpensive gear.
Natural is such a weird word to use. A spring reverb is just as designed as an algorithmic reverb. Like a human being made it. I think you just think it sounds good. Which is fine.
Same general idea, but you need to use a thin sheet of metal (usually stainless steel) hung from a frame, usually with minimal contact. Attach a piezo mic to the plate, and point a speaker directly at the plate, nearly touching it. Amplify and record the output from the piezo. The plate needs to be taught in the frame so it doesn’t swing around, allowing it to reverberate.

Welcome back! I'm surprised you didn't try/show your springs on some drums, I think the twanginess of spring 'verbs can make for a cool fake "room" sound on percussion, especially once you start playing with dampening it like you did with the string.
Is it possible to use a tone beast 12 pre amp for this? So out of sound interface into pre amp into reverb tank back in to sound interface. Great video btw 👍
you should try making your own spring tanks too, it's a lot of fun. if you wanna go big, grab a couple of those 3$ plastic "echo-mic" toys from the dollar store and steal the springs out of em
@@creativesoundlab the easy way is to get a pair of cheap computer speakers and some contact mics and glue them to the spring's ends. this creates a longitudinal driver rather than the more traditional torsional driver, which results in more random resonances and "splashy" sounds, so it's not ideal for creating generic reverb sounds. the more involved way would be getting spring reverb replacement parts and using those
if you're going the more DIY route you can also experiment with using guitar pickups as "taps" at different points along the spring, much like a tape echo with multiple heads

Hi Ryan, I stumbled across this amazing video right at the time, as I took an old reverb tank out of my marshall dsl 401, cause I didn't like the sound of it in the amp. I gave it a try to process vocals, guitars and a rhodes piano. Amazing results, I also experimented with effect pedals in front of it. For the guitar sound I took an overdrive pedal to form the sound of the reverb even further. That was so much fun! I even had to smile like you, because the sound was so nice.
Cool ideas for season 7. I wonder if cotton from a pill bottle would be easier to keep in place while "tuning" that reverb tank. Nice bass track on that song BTW.

Yeah WTF!? Mine had that written on it, too! And to think it was underneath the circuit boards until I tore open my old Sunn reinforcement PA. It’s dainty wires weren’t left with quite enough slack, so as the reverb tank shook around in there, it’s sharp edge of sheet metal sheared clean through the wire. This had to be the smallest thinnest wire I’ve ever encountered. Those transducers are something of an interest to me too. They twist instead of pushing and pulling, from how they are oriented. Spring reverb tanks are very amazing and awe inspiring works of art, with their isolating little coatings of wax or rubber and all those grommets. Completely intriguing works of art.
"Controlled atmosphere conditions".... In other words it was a rare factory job where you didn't freeze in winter and you didn't sweltering in the summer. This probably made it much easier to hire and keep skilled workers.
When you run a balanced connection through a transformer to get single ended, you get single ended at double the amplitude due to balanced being regular and inverted.
So, now I have to make a stereo spring unit to go along with my stereo plate I made using similar found parts. Cost of my 5'x7' plate, $35. Love this video!
Oh man, look up the 80’s Furman Spring Reverb. It has an analog limiter and a 3-band EQ (sweepable mids). All in one RU. I’m fishing for a second unit for a stereo send. The inclusion of the limiter, makes the reverb SO much more pronounced…even at low levels. SO much MOJO!
Cool idea. I'm a brand new subscriber. My guitar amp uses a 12AX7 for the reverb. One stage drives the springs, the second stage is the return. Makes me think that a stand-alone tube version would be an interesting project. Hmmm, I have a couple of tiny tanks in my parts bins--never have found a use for them. Thanks for the idea ;-)
Hello, why does the signal from computer need to go to a headphone amp first? Why can’t the line out of computer go straight to the rca ins of spring reverb? Thanks
OOOOHHHH?! You didn’t even have the driver circuit from the amp to drive the reverb tank’s transducers? You’re overdriving those transducers then, no? This is a really great application. Using that headphone amp on the bare reverb tank. I have burned my fingers back to stubs trying to solder up all types of schematics, in my efforts towards finding the ultimate spring reverb circuit. This is the end of a whole chapter of my life, really. Hmm!? Gets me to thinking about a new ambition, and all thanks to you. I’ve never seen a spring reverb tank that didn’t have unbalanced RCA plugs of any sort. So my new goal is to build a balanced spring reverb setup! I think I have seen double sets of springs before, for stereo treatment. I guess this could double and adapt the XLR, so I wonder how much that could help or harm a signal? Well, sending a balanced signal through two separate tanks is going to be anything but balanced at the output. This is gonna lead me into some experimentation. I’ll be a little smarter for it at the end of the day, so I’m gonna keep this in my thoughts. THANKS FOR SHARING!

Brooooo,,,,,, i have this amazing sounding plexi, hand wired, i do not want to mess with the sound with pedals. I have been wanting to hack a spring reverb in there, with solid connections and a simple knob at the back. Been too afraid to do it. It does'nt sound that scary.
good idea , ive tried running my recorded vocals through a guitar amp with spring reverb out of the 'redbox' output and back in , but it gets too much gain and sounds tinny
I can recommend this too I have a tank screwed to a blank rack panel and use it all the time super fun and wrong in the right way I have to get a second one now to do stereo 🤟😎

I have an old combo where the reverb is a bit noisy, hopefully it's just the driver circuit not the tank. You've got me thinking about real diy springs from scratch somehow. .. slinky? bed spring? Not sure what floppy springs would work. Chain 20 retractable pen springs? Glue ends to a piezo? No idea really. I do find these (near) zero cost ideas exciting though, so hope they'll be more of those, these days I have no money!
Ghetto style: I've been building mine based on a 1978 scheme, with shower heater springs driven by a 4" radio speaker... Driven via either mixer aux or interface phone outs. The scheme used phono needle pickups to capture the reverb, I began with reversed earbuds. Now on the process of installing an electret + DIY IC pre... but i wonder whether using an electric guitar bridge piezo would sound nicer, since with the earbuds it sounded really cavernous.

Not so much for me, as I'm mostly interested in creating amazing spring reverbs from old parts, so I found this video, which may I remind you, it's called "How to Create an Amazing Spring Reverb from Old Parts". Unfortunately for me, I watched it though and am none the wiser on how to how to create amazing spring reverbs from old parts, but I learnt about Jordan Orkened and his horrible music, Pipeline XT and a few other things I don't give a fuck about. @@creativesoundlab , I've actually seen an organ "tone cabinet" (powered speaker with built-in tube amp) that used vertical reverb springs inside cylindrical metal tubes that had to be filled with oil. Another tone cabinet style had springs that hung loosely in an arc, like necklaces.

Hmmm well the preamp can only get so hot on its output stage. I would try a speaker amp instead.

Yeah it was loud in the mix. In real life it would be 4 or 5 dB less in a mix. Not sure but this was def louder than usual so people could hear it.

a normal circular piezo sounds cool too, i attached the spring to the center of the piezo by soldering a hook to it.
