SBCTA Arrow Diesel Multiple Unit Arrival

  • The highly anticipated Redlands Passenger Rail Project/Arrow, which will bring state-of-the-art clean-air rail technology to one of the world’s busiest transportation corridors is scheduled to begin service later this year. Arrow initially will feature the low-emission diesel multiple units (DMUs), followed by North America’s first zero-emission hydrogen-powered trains (ZEMU). A few months ago, three low-emission diesel multiple units (DMUs) were delivered to the new Arrow Maintenance Facility in the City of San Bernardino. Crews have assembled the DMUs and the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) will begin testing them on the new 9-mile corridor this week.
    Arrow will transform how commuter rail is operated in the Inland Empire and across the state. Service will run between the San Bernardino Transit Center located at Rialto Avenue and E Street in Downtown San Bernardino and will terminate at the University of Redlands. Arrow will connect the east valley of San Bernardino County to a multi-modal transit hub that can provide access to all points west. Locally it will connect residents, businesses, and visitors to a variety of leisure, education, healthcare, and other destinations.

    Burning question: is there going to be an app to pay the tickets and be trackable on the Transit app? I have a hunch these trains will not take Tap.

    This is all nice nice, but what about crime ? Homeless being on the trains, gangsters on the trains….? Will these spoke persons ride this as their form of commute and give up their car and or subsidies? Or will they revert back to “I drive electric” . I rather feel it will be the latter.

      Public transit is generally a lot more safe than driving your car. Crime makes headlines, but you're still much more likely to get injured or die in a car crash. Plus you can become just as well a victim of a crime while driving down a street in a bad neighborhood or while loading your groceries into your car in a car park.

      I agree that you are less likely to be individually involve in an accident while riding the train. I am more concerned about the criime and violence. Yes it could happen in the parking garage or the parking lot. At least you have avenues of escape and potential for help. Not so much while riding in a commuter car. Politicians will most likely not be seen riding commuter trains, opting for the protection of a singular vehicle.

      ​@@iman-pv2sc This is unfortunately the difference between the country I live in and the US: Here in Switzerland you'd see even cabinet members riding in trams and trains regularly.
      While you're right with your observation that there's less of an escape route in trains, the same fact applies to criminals. They also tend to dislike the fact that there's CCTV all around plus usually a lot of witnesses.
      If ever a crime happens on a train here in Switzerland, there's a bunch of police officer waiting at the next station and only one door is being opened to allow the arrest. I've experienced this once in my lifetime.
      To sum it up: there's very little crime committed on trains here, particularly violent crimes. True problems are vandalism against trains and pick-pocketing in the crowds of large train stations.

    Um, okay .. I live in South Redlands and who in their right mind wants to go to downtown Berdoo??? Plus, the horns are intolerable. So yeah, thanks for nothing.

      it is very ironic that these fancy new DMU trains are carefully engineered to be as quiet as possible, and yet they had to put a damn fog horn on it like it's a 2-mile long freight train that can't stop for anything

      @@parshimers RIGHT? It starts at just before 6am here .. I live at a fair distance and cannot imagine how bad it is for people proximate to the tracks.

    Where's the security component? Little mention about a tactical response team with guys equipped with long guns, machine pistols clad in military grade body armor and the ability to suppress a violent threat or act of religious inspired terrorism?

    The short, dumpy and bald chairman needs to have his trousers hemmed; Why? It's called attention to detail! If he can.t do that he has no business running a cutting edge railroad.
