Another great video! You nailed it about most of today's musicians want to be stars and have forgotten it's all about the music. Thank y'all for the great videos, this 71-year-old South Carolina rocker appreciates them all! Please, keep them coming!!!!
I had the opportunity to meet the late, great Jim Gordon, bless his heart, after a show at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA. I don't remember who he was playing with. I went to the edge of the stage when he was packing up. I asked him what the story was with Derek and the Dominos, and he said that it was defunct. Too bad. But it was great to meet him. You all made a classic, thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

That album is a masterpiece of listening pleasure. The songs are timeless and are just as vibrant as the day they were written( thank you Bobby). Brings back so many great memories. There was a juke box in an open air pizza place on the boardwalk in Wildwood, NJ by the sea and Bell Bottom Blues rang out of that thing loud and clear. First time I ever heard that particular song. I was blown away.
Can you imagine what it was like to be 14 and have the ll Things Must Pass album along with Layla and other Assorted Lovesongs released in 1970, great days. shame the 50th of All Things Must Pass is delayed till next year but another must get
Great recollection on one of the GREAT albums of ALL TIME. There was magic in the air and water when Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs was made. Thank you for this muso/writer Bobby and CoCo. The last two minutes of this - from talking about the Corporate part of music today (bummer) to the question "anything that you would change about Layla?" - Bobby -"No, that was a good record" (so cool) and no dog on fire to new stereo talk.
Little Wing is such a good track. Yeah, it's all about the band - such a great band. Have listened to Derek and the Dominos for decades and still sounding fresh. Thank you.
Love the Stories Bobby! And Kudos to Coco, Great Job all around!! Coco, Love the nice, clear voice and calm vibe. And Hearty Laughs from both of you!!! Love Y'all :)
I know I’m not the only one that really dig these videos and hope you both continue uploading more. I remember the first time I heard the remake of Chuck Willis song It’s Too Late on the L.A.O.A.L.S. album, wondering who is that belting out those wailing soulful vocals blew me away! That was a long time ago, been listening to Mr. Bobby Whitlock ever since!🎸🇨🇦

Thank you both for taking the time to make these videos. I really enjoy hearing the details of the recording of an album I've heard thousands of times, on vinyl and CD. Bell Bottom Blues, you still make me cry.
I've loved your sound for a long time and I'm glad you are sharing these stories. I grew up in deep Southern Illinois not too far from Cairo. I also went to school in Martin, TN. Bobby's voice sounds like what I know and love. Peace y'all.
Thank you for these wonderful, honest glimpses behind the scenes. I’ve played with many bands in my seventy three years( I was a “Shondell” for a year, got “ fired” in Augusta.) The dynamics, squabbles, and moments of pure bliss, harmony and brotherhood are universal. Play on brother.🎸

Bobby Whitlock is great! I grew up listening to Eric and George's stuff but to get the behind the scenes is some heavy bizzness, Coco u do a great job keeping Bobby in tune!!
Carl's amp was probably an Ampeg B-15. I had one from 1974. I once used it on a session as a guitar amp. You couldn't be in the room with it. It was massive sounding!
They had a beautiful tone, but they were not loud. I played a borrowed one on bar gigs for over a year. Just barely loud enough in bars, but ideal for recording.
I love watching the dog. He is one curious puppy. If you see this, I have a question on the champ amp. I’ve always assumed it was a 50s era tweed champ. But I saw an interview with Tom Dowd and he said he remembered it as a blackface vibrochamp. Curious if Mr. Whitlock remembers.
I ordered the deluxe boxset from a few years back and it never showed up. Have been looking for another ever since. Hoping to the the 50th and 40th versions now that I have a record player.
Hey guys. I just got my copy of Derek& the Dominoes live at Fillmore East. The sound quality is fantastic and you guys had everything nailed down tight. Sounds more like a studio recording. I was disappointed that "Anyday" wasn't on it. Oh, well. Anyway, I really enjoying it so far. Too bad y'all didn't do some Bluesbreakers stuff like "Little Girl". You guys would have burnt the place down! Iwas thinking about getting the Layla 50th anniversary CD, but now I think I'll get the 20th instead.
As I remember, Clapton was known for leaving bands when they went 'mainstream'. He sort of disappeared after Blind Faith + was playing with Delany&Bonnie. Before this album was released-only a few songs on the radio, all we knew was that it was by a BAND called Derek & the Domino's. Once we could purchase the album, word got around that "Derek is Eric"! We loved it for the Music, the Love Story-- not for Eric. It was like a guessing game. Brilliant way to have the attention on the Music, And why it is STILL a popular album today!
Great questions Coco...Thank you. Saving up to buy my vinyl Box Set. What song / type of guitar did Bobby use on Layla? Did Bobby know or work with Nicky Hopkins at all? Did Bobby ever work with Jack Nitzche? What was it like working with Jimmy Miller? Wishing you both a Happy & healthy new year. steve

( you know you need a new Macintosh set dont you) Look, you guys were memphis soul, and the world loved it , ( and still loves it and always will) , and they came to "you" guys , And what came from from Eric was developed from that , he picked the right place to to "start back at the start" , and right on , I'm always quick to say being here, cause I'm proud of you guys .
That little dog reminds me of ours We had to put her down this past summer for kidney failure. So sad. LAOALS was one of my top inspirational albums that led me to guitar. Little Wing really rocks.
You guys are great. I'm just wondering. Why don't you make a video with both of you in frame, talking and discussing the history, and the present, so we can see Coco as well ? That would be nice, to put a face with that lovely voice! Thanks, in any case.
Eric Clapton and Duane Allman did a terrific job on the album but, without Bobby Whitlock, Layla is just a great record not one of the greatest of all time!
The famous repeating of Eric singing the word “Layla” in the 2nd or 3rd verse towards the end before the piano part drew me in the first time I heard it, and I’m presuming “now” was you Bobby ?
The one thing I have learned over time watching these videos is the order of how things went. I thought because I did not know "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" was done and released and then you toured. The record came out early November of 1970 and you all had been touring months before and did a few shows after the record came out. I have a hard time understanding being this was a new band why things went down as they did. Record, release and then hit the road would seem the natural order but guess not. Some missing logic in hindsight or perhaps that never was even given any thought. Only you would know Bobby.
I have a question! Why when I try to play on the album I am out of tune? Was the pitch altered or did the guys tune their instruments differently? Thank you for your music, I am listening now to all Bobby solo albums.
Good question, in those days some producers would speed up tracks to sweeten a record, or tighten it up a bit, it was on tape then... some would to make vocals sound better as well.
I remember reading that there were bags of stuff around during the recording of Layla. To look at the photos you guys looked wasted. I recall someone saying the photo of Duane on the phone was him calling his dealer for some stuff to be sent. Any truth to that.....

Ampeg B15 Fliptop for Carl. Bobby, were they current model champs or tweed 50s era? no one ever seems to know in articles. There is also rumors that Delaney gave modified champs with bigger tubes and with JBL speakers to George Harrison and Eric.
No they are not the tweed make of the 50s.. they were the current at the time champ amps. Delaney never gave anybody anything.. he always expected something from others.
....sorry;...it's a JOKE to include Derek Trucks in that box set...WHY ????...why not put ME in it !?!...i was as involved as HE was!!!...worthless promotion......it's secular heresy....don't mess with history....thanks, Bobby & Coco !!!....my rant for the DAY..
Bands just don’t have the fire and swing these days that they used to. Delaney and Bonnie and Derek and the Domino’s had a furious delicate touch and swung like fuck! (Excuse the language but it’s the only way to put it) players are professional to a fault these days and it sucks the soul out of a record if you turn them up in a mix. Sorry, sore point with me. All the best for the holidays and new year xx
That remark doesn't make any sense since the Domino's produced the record, Tom merely recorded them. But he did bring Duane in, and that changed the trajectory of the record.
Hey Bobby I always enjoyed your work but you seem conflicted.. In one episode you say you would never want to play with Eric again been there done that but then late r on in a different episode you said you're waiting for the call. Let me ask you the clothes and the perm hair was that about being a Rock star or was that about the music. How many times did you mention hopping in your Ferrari.. You say Duane Allman was a hired hand yet you wanted him in the band. Anyway I subscribe to your channel and for the most part I enjoy your stories. Happy Holidays to you and Coco..
Hey you tube Bobby never said either, never had permed hair..of course was loving things he could never afford having grown up in poverty. And yes Duane was hired.. and yes they wanted him in the band. None of this is conflicting. And yes Ferrari are for jumping in if you have one.
@@BW-CC Just wondering... The clothes were Rockstar and not about the music.. Check Clapton and Whitlock Bell bottom blues from 2000 that sure looks like permed hair to me. Happy holidays ruclips.net/video/fZNL0wvIj78/видео.html
Bobby was very ill at the time, I can assure you that it was not permed. He was not looking good at all, this is true. Just a very sick man and days before getting sober. Glad your here
@@BW-CC Yes, but he sings beautifully here (2000) and he looks nothing short of fantastic. CoCo - he looks GREAT here ! You are very wrong. And he has this sweet white soul sound in his voice, nobody else has on Planet Earth !!! His singing is immaculate. It has been my favourite video for ages !!! Happy New Year. :) PS. Of course - It's NOT permed hair !!!! :) And let's be honest Bobby was 52 in 2000...looking 32 !!!!! :) I said this before: in 2000 Bobby looked like Clapton's grandson. CoCo - does Bobby sell his paintings? I love some of them so very much....Best Wishes.
@@BW-CC So glad Bobby got sober and is still here to share his wonderful and amazing memories. It's strange that so many of us have to go thru (and survive) hell in order to find heaven and being sober for 23 years now I can testify - it's the greatest thing since the first breath.
Bobby Whitlock & CoCo Carmel yea I didn't mean he told them what to play. We all know that. Obviously the musicians made the record I just meant his work on the controls was a great help on the record as far as how it turned out and yea the whole him bringing Duane in thing well that's was a ringer!
So natural... just like hanging with Bobby and talking... it could be in my living room I love these segments
These conversations are amazing, and Bobby's memory is amazing, and CoCo is an excellent interviewer. These should be compiled into a four or five hour documentary.

To me the Layla Album and everything that belongs to D and the D,or even your Solo Albums or James Brown and so many great artist too, should have a million miles service.
I mean i have no kids, but those who have should think about what they wanna left to them. Here my son i got 2 Million Giga bites for you....
Nope thats not what its all about.
But nobody wants to hear that these days.
Zeitgeist oh yeah
But what can you do ?
You can't always get what you want, but if you try....yeah i think Mick was right...
And what about Bob Dylan ?
Well when you look at the world like it is right now with every twist and turn....
To say it in his words 》You don't need a weather man to know which way the wind blows...
Stand and Deliver.....

Lots of History to cover
Ampeg B15 Fliptop for Carl. Bobby, were they current model champs or tweed 50s era? no one ever seems to know in articles. There is also rumors that Delaney gave modified champs with bigger tubes and with JBL speakers to George Harrison and Eric.
No they are not the tweed make of the 50s.. they were the current at the time champ amps. Delaney never gave anybody anything.. he always expected something from others.
WDIA: Paying the cost of being the boss~
original mix of layla on Atco lp is best
and
original mix of "In Concert" live on RSO is best
Looking for this box set on CD. Can't find it anywhere. Can someone tell me where I can find it please.
I'll see what I can find as far as where you can get one
@@BW-CC Thank you.
Thanks, thanks and thanks♥️🎸🎹🇮🇹
PS. Anyone else try to weigh down their record player to hear the songs without the added speed?
What about your Piano part? That was a important part of the song...
The piano part in 'Layla' is actually either Jim Gordon or some say Rita Coolidge.
....sorry;...it's a JOKE to include Derek Trucks in that box set...WHY ????...why not put ME in it !?!...i was as involved as HE was!!!...worthless promotion......it's secular heresy....don't mess with history....thanks, Bobby & Coco !!!....my rant for the DAY..
You got a email I could message you guys with? Or an instagram or something with DM? All the best for the holidays and new year xx
All the best for the holidays and new year xx
totally agree, lots of ballshit technology and poor feel
If Tom dowd wasn’t there the record would’ve been nothing
That remark doesn't make any sense since the Domino's produced the record, Tom merely recorded them.
But he did bring Duane in, and that changed the trajectory of the record.
Hey Bobby I always enjoyed your work but you seem conflicted..
In one episode you say you would never want to play with Eric again been there done that but then late
r on in a different episode you said you're waiting for the call.
Hey you tube
Bobby never said either, never had permed hair..of course was loving things he could never afford having grown up in poverty.
And yes Duane was hired.. and yes they wanted him in the band. None of this is conflicting. And yes Ferrari are for jumping in if you have one.
@@BW-CC
Just wondering... The clothes were Rockstar and not about the music..
Check Clapton and Whitlock Bell bottom blues from 2000 that sure looks like permed hair to me.
Happy holidays

14:09 bad dog haaa
She was a baby...
Well I don’t mean nothing it wouldn’t have been as great as it was
All Tom did was stay in the control room.. he didn't instruct the guys to do anything. So, we disagree completely.
Bobby Whitlock & CoCo Carmel yea I didn't mean he told them what to play. We all know that. Obviously the musicians made the record I just meant his work on the controls was a great help on the record as far as how it turned out and yea the whole him bringing Duane in thing well that's was a ringer!
Get an old refurbished stereo guys. The sound is Much Better .
We have my old stereo system from the 1970s
