- Key of F. Banjo: fDGCD. Brad Leftwich, banjo & vocal; Linda Higginbotham, banjo uke. Brad learned this tune directly from Matokie Slaughter (1919-1999) of Pulaski, Virginia. She called it "Big-Eyed Rabbit" but it's unrelated to the Round Peak tune of that name. Samantha Bumgarner and Eva Davis's pioneering 1924 recording of "Big-Eyed Rabbit" is where Brad got the words. Matokie tuned the banjo one step higher than here. Check out Matokie's powerful banjo playing on "Jake Gillie" elsewhere on this channel.
Dropping the 5th string a step below typical sawmill has a pretty cool effect on the song. I've been that with Dirk Powell's Waterbound. Should probably experiment with it more.

Thanks Brad. Great playing as usual. I read the video description, but had a follow-up question: Do you recall that Matokie Slaughter played this tune relatively out of either gEADE? or maybe gGADE? I'm still trying to learn the subtleties in her version. Thank you for any insights.
I believe she was playing it out of gEADE and I lowered it to accommodate my voice. I tried to follow her version as best I could!
@@bradleftwich ah makes sense, thanks!
