    Pinewood Derby track design have changed a bit over the years and it demonstrated some of this phenomenon. In the '60s they started out steeper and leveled off about 1/2 way. As a Cub Scout I had a car that was very underweight, but had very little friction in the axles. It would be behind at the end of the slope, and then pass the heavier cars on the flat, as it lost speed much less than the heavier cars did.
    As I got older and had children, and an engineering degree, I did the complete MgH=1/2Mv² calculations (including the wheel inertial energy) to determine where to put the center of gravity.
    Fun times.

    • @Groink1
      @Groink1 2 года назад +45

      Yes and no, it's mainly traction. You can see that the tires of the smaller cars are spinning instead of gripping to the ground.

    • @jorisd6584
      @jorisd6584 2 года назад +55

      to do this properly scientifically he would have to have had the red cars in parallel, so they were both pulling only the SUV, now the front car was pulling both the SUV and the other red car

    • @HATECELL
      @HATECELL 2 года назад +18

      It's mostly due to traction. The SUV is likely to have wider tyres and even if they aren't, the SUV puts all of its weight on driven tyres whilst the 200BXs put some of their weight on unpowered tyres. Whilst torque does play a role, once your tyres start slipping all the torque in the world won't save you

    • @Kevin-dt9xm
      @Kevin-dt9xm 2 года назад

      @@novathepug6692 weight transfer isnt even a factor. Sitting still, the red cars have literally half the traction per drive wheel of the SUV, because while both has 4 drive wheels, the red cars have 4 rollers that take half of their weight. For the SUV any weight transfer would be transfering from one drive wheel to another, so its total traction would remain the same. For the red cars, weight transfer would slightly improve their traction, as the tug of war would shift SOME of their inertia to the back, but it would need to transfer literally ALL of their weight to even match the SUV. Given all 8 wheels were firmly planted, thats obviously not happening. It also straight up wouldnt happen at all with the red car in the back, cuz any weight transfer from tugging the chain would be canceled out by the car in front tugging on IT. Even if the red car in front was doing a wheelie, that would only give the red cars 75% of the traction of the SUV (because as mentioned, the weight transfer of the rear car cancels out)

  • @alextwist8
    @alextwist8 2 года назад +17

    I thought for sure the two red cars would win, but thinking about it some more the SUV had double the power but not double the wheels. I think what made the difference was that there was more weight per driven wheel so more grip.

    • @Jkim890

Interesting to see yellow,s performance with full throttle - I suspect it is the vehicle drivetrain/gearing that is to play there, and using different vehicles may change that outcome. When you went to full throttle, I assumed yellow would win. Gravity is still the dominant factor, especially because shifting times fuck up your acceleration when boosted this much by gravity, but the yellow car has the second best assistance from gravity while having a more gradual slope allowing it to put down more power and push itself farther. I assume the red vehicle was mostly limited by shifting times and 2nd most limited by traction due to following such a perfect curve.

    how smooth were those curves in the beginning? i noticed from the first person perspective the brachistochrone ramp seemed a little bit bumpy which could definitely cause enough speed loss to lose by about a foot. because in theory at least (meaning if there was no friction) you have the force of gravity and if each object now has an added force with the forces being identical (because they are the same car) the vehicle that won with no added force should win with the added force

    • @zenleek2129
      @zenleek2129 2 года назад

      Not necessarily, because the roads do not have the same length.
      So, let's say we ditch gravity and only use their motors.
      The green car would be fastest, then the yellow one, then maybe blue and only then red.
      Now adding 1% of gravity's pull, the result would barely change. Then 5%, you'd see changes but not enough to turn it around. Then a bit more and a bit more, until you reach a point where the red and yellow car basically go equally fast.

    The SUV won the last one because it has higher ground pressure.
    Think about it, 2400kg with 4 tires is 600kg per tire.
    2400kg with 8 tires is 300kg per tire.
    This means that the SUV would have greater downwards pressure (and therefore better traction). You can see how the 200bx tires are slipping because they can’t get as much grip.

    The test with one suv vs two cars is easy to explain. The weight of two cars is split over 8 wheels so the amount of weight on each wheel is less and therefore easier to break inertia.

    hey, the jump test at 3:22 kinda reminds me of some ridiculous shit that happened in a car throwing competition hosted by Spanish RUclipsr BIlly Cherokee. It was exactly on this map.
    Someone managed to make a car that produced so much lift, the car almost flew out of the goddamn map.
    If I remember correctly that guy won a PS5 or something, so props to them
    if that wasn't enough, this year someone managed to actually FLY A CAR OIT OF THE MAP. Hilarious.

    It happened to be faster because of gravity. The more vertical the angle, the gravity pull force be much bigger, and it helps to accelerate the object faster.
    Remove the gravity, and do it again with the same line graphic, object with the shortest line tend to be the number one to finish the race.
    (Yeah without gravity, the car wouldn't be able to move in the road. So TEST #2 need to change the object with airplane or space shuttle instead)
