Totally different take on a great song. I like it. This is a nice showcase of someone taking someone else's material and giving it their own stamp and taking it in a fresh new direction.
I never tire of this video. Skerik, Charlie hunter and Stanton Moore! Shame Dillon doesn't really get to rip it, as he is at the same level as a percussionist! Absolutely live GAT, definitely changed my life musically...
I'm trying to get my head around the geometry of those "frets"! I suspect no frets at all, they are painted illusions ? A major fretting joke perhaps......
@@rogerantonybennett5272 nah, it allows for a different scale length for the lower strings, so that they can have proper tension and not sound "flubby" . Ibanez currently does them, kiesel, abasi, and a bunch of others now.
The first time I heard Skerik play the saxophone like that I spent ages scratching my head wondering how they managed to get a guitar with such extreme sustain and attack, it was only some time afterwards I realised it was infact a highly distorted saxophone and not a guitar 🤣🤣
Hah ... love Skerik sporting the West Seattle t ... and these musicians are amazing. Also: the funkiest guitar neck I think I've ever seen. Has to be a one-off - no one else could ever figure out how to play that one. Hope this crew gets together again for a tour ...
At the end of the day - I'm there to listen to the music being played, not for them to entertain me with antics and theatrics. Granted, there is a market for that but these guys aren't playing to that type of crowd. One of the times I "saw" Charlie play live (at a little hole in the wall in Providence), 15 of the 20 people in the room surrounded the stage and kept shouting and trying to talk to him while he played. 2 songs in and he left and didn't come back. They have no idea what they missed
I know you asked 9 years ago, but just in case anyone else is interested: the fanned frets allow the bass strings to be a longer scale than the treble strings. The longer a string is, the lower it can be tuned without losing too much tension and becoming slack. This gives the bass notes more volume and projection.
Bad assed. The guitar man is playing bass and soloing at the same time. Boss. Skerik tore it up on sax. Wish I knew what pedals Skerik is using. Great stuff.
James, Couldn't agree with you more. I've been playing 47 years and also teach....and let's face it, some of the best guitarists in the world sit while playing, they're called Classical Guitarists..... On point with BB King and now Johnny Winters takes a seat. One of my biggest beefs over the decades are people who write reviews on guitarists but don't actually play the instrument, i.e., "Air Guitar"..... I prefer sitting as well.
This is a mislead, this is NOT if 6 was 9 by Jimi, it is however a hella blues jam, jammed up and improvised, Mfk'er's can play thier royal ass off. !!
Who would dislike this? You gotta be a serious tool to watch this and have a negative opinion.
this is called feelin the music u make !

I must see this band live. MUST.
jimi would've fuckin loved this. I wonder how often they play it, they performed it when I saw them a couple weeks ago but it was different
I've seen them play it twice out of the 5 times I've seen them. Not sure if it's a go-to or if I was just fucking lucky.
the man is playing a god damn 8 string fanned fret guitar, and he is playing it well. he is clearly a boss.

Trey Gunn could play it.

Check out the neck on this guitar. Slanted frets. I've never seen this before. Does it somehow help the tuning or the finger positioning?
Top 3 strings are bass strings, he's playing bass and guitar at the same time. Charlie Hunter.

Is there a name for this type of jazz? Because I found myself being really into it.
Not in anyway jazz lol
I see it as the natural evolution of jazz. Modern jazz, I suppose. The band overall, that is. This song in particular? Blues jazz?
Cool jam, not sure where the 6was9 part comes in
As the purists would say "holy shit that boy can play""
Bravissimi,ma questo è un altro pezzo. Comunque molto bello
lol
Why's he sit? That guitar probably weighs 15 pounds. He probably sits so he can make it through two songs without having to leave the gig in pain.
Suena un Bajo pero no veo ningùn bajista ¡¡??
Great instrumental but no way does this resemble "If 6 was 9"
? maybe try to hear the all video...
Yeah true . Im a fan of all these guys but "If 6 was 9 " just aint there
agreed. This is a great soulful jam, over a very common groove, but not "If 6 Was 9".
Loved it though, and Charlie Hunter is a beast!
