MATKA CANYON WALK [4K]

Matka is a canyon located west of central Skopje, Macedonia. Matka is one of the most popular outdoor destinations in Macedonia and is home to several medieval monasteries. The Matka Lake within the Matka Canyon is the oldest artificial lake in the country.
There are ten caves at Matka Canyon, with the shortest in length being 20 metres (65.6 feet) and the longest being 176 metres (577.4 feet). The canyon also features two vertical pits, both roughly extending 35 metres (114.8 feet) in depth.
Located on the right bank of the Treska River, Vrelo Cave was listed as one of the top 77 natural sites in the world in the New7Wonders of Nature project.
Though the exact depth of the cave is unknown, some speculate that it could be the deepest underwater cave in the world.
Matka Canyon is home to a wide variety of plants and animals, some of which are unique to the area. Roughly 20% of the plant life found at Matka is endemic and only found here. The canyon is also home to 77 indigenous species of butterfly. The canyon is also home to the most venomous snake in south Europe, the horned viper. The canyon's caves are home to large populations of bats.
Due in large part to its proximity to Skopje, Matka Canyon is a popular destination for citizens and tourists. The canyon is one of Macedonia's foremost areas for alpine hiking. The climbing season begins around Easter and ends in November. Kayaking on the Treska River is a popular activity, as are fishing, hunting, and swimming.

Great video! Match canyon is absolutely beautiful. It was one of our favorite sites of Skopje when we went last week. Also Vrelo Cave is a must when you visit. That can be visited via a boat ride. The boat ride is 20 minutes out to the cave, 20 minutes to explore, and 20 minutes back.

Matka was build in 1935 period when was Kingdom of Yugoslavia ( Serbs, Croats, Macedonians). The famous dr architect Miladin Pećinar from Belgrade, was the designer of the project of construction of Hydro Power plant of Sveti Andreja as name of first energetic facility in Skopje. Matka is famous for medivel orthodox churches : Sv Nikola, Sv Andrea, Matka monastirot, Sv.Nedela, Sv.Spas, Sv. Jovan Zlatousti and 10 caves most famous called Ubava, Vrelo and Krstana( absolute macedonian names).
It was bombed during withdrawal of Fascists. The Matka several times saved city of Skopje from floods, especially in 1969 and 1972. Matka Canyon is home to wide variety of plants and animals. Famous for 77 species of butterfly, also ducklings and wild boars.
