Perhaps GW should have had a 3 month "made to order" pre order process covering all proposed TOW armies - 1st month to order and then 2 months for delivery. Everybody happy and all up and running.....
Not exactly forced; maybe the Empire range will be good in new plastic but for Bretonnians, people have been buying for years Perry Miniatures. Perry Bros were the original sculptors for GW for the Fantasy series, so their own minis are quite spot on and on par with GW's plastic.
Thanks for another great vid, Andy! Given that once again GW has created *so much more* demand than they're willing or able to supply, people will inevitably turn to third parties in order to play. Love it when the Big Guy accidentally helps out all the little players in the industry! Originally i was most curious how this is all going to impact Mantic and KoW. Given that they first started as a cheaper, more accessible alternative to WFB and the now evident stock issues for Old World, this may actually turn into a real boon for them, rather than potentially damaging competition...
the showed miniatures are designed and selled as stl by highland miniature which has a huge range of miniatures. from empire to bretons to dwarfs to undead. i did whole armies with highland miniatures
Fantastic video as usual and thanks for the plug on alternative proxy models. Can't wait to see more (and hopefully that Solland theme in the future)!!! Solland Forever!
After the PDF's dropped, I looked at the Skaven one and the units seems to match up with the AoS Skaven units... I'm sure the same holds for a majority of the models. (Beastmen, Lizardmen, etc). Will be interesting to see how this plays out...
@@MediocreHobbieslizardmen/seraphon, goblins, ogres, and vampires/soulblight are mostly in stock on UK store still! Just a few key pieces that are sold out (some have been sold out since December lol, classic GW Christmas production)
Here in the states they said their only warehouse in Memphis is delaying everything due to weather. Also scalpers bought everything up. Glad I decided to 3d print instead of waiting around for gw's nonexistent stock.
Was looking at 3rd party Brettonian, Empire and Dwarf armies. Think pretty much sold on getting some 28mm prints. Do still have a soft spot for the old GW orc/goblin minis.
I'm taking it as a fantastic hobby opportunity. (Not really interested in the old models however). Building up a pretty solid Bretonnia force based on the Perry Agincourt line, but supplimenting with lost kingdom, song of ice and fire, frostgrave soldiers/knights, etc. Some incredible sculpts out there.
All the (plastic) launch models for Tomb Kings and Bretonnia are available from Eire Hobbies - so perhaps a lot of the stock is with independent retailers? The PDFs were released on the Monday, two days after the official launch day. GW's messaging was a bit unclear about this. In one article they said "at launch", and in another they said "shortly after launch" - I don't know why they didn't just say "on Monday", or just put them up on the website on Saturday. It's a very small difference in the scheme of things, but would have been needlessly frustrating for lots of people. I think the armies where there are most difficulties getting models for the army are Orcs & Goblins (but even then, night goblins are available), High Elves (I think there's nothing) and Empire (Steam Tank and flagellants are part of the Cities of Sigmar range, but also out of stock now). All the Dwarf infantry is still being sold for AOS, I think, for Wood Elves you can get the forest spirits parts of the army, and I think everything in the two Chaos rosters is being sold as part of AOS. It's a bit of a weird situation for GW, because clearly they want everyone to be able to buy things, but their release model is to have regular releases spread throughout the year. If they re-release all the old stuff now, they might have very little to release for the rest of the year. One of the ironies is that it's easier to start an Old World army with GW models for most of the legacy armies than for the core armies - Vampire Counts, Dark Elves, Skaven, etc It will be interesting to see how long we have to wait for the Orcs & Goblins releases - it will give us an idea of how much they intend to space these all out.
You raise a very valid point right here: if not cautious, outselling ToW might kill it in the end. I really wish we can have restock or new releases soon enough (not much for me as I already have what I need), because endless frustration is not a very good motivator to lurk for a new game.
If GW wasn't asking for new product prices for their 20+ year old minis I'd be more inclined to pay for them.. I might buy some ushabti, Sphinxes of characters, but that's just because I've always wanted ushabti (but by the time I had money to buy them they were meh AND finecast) and settra.
You raise a few interesting points,on using proxy miniatures such Highlands. Oathmark,Frostgrave to name but two ranges have useful proxy multiple part plastic kits that will fit several of roles with in the list. Personally I've no need of new miniatures as my lead pile is capable of churning out several armies in white metal and a couple more with a few plastic bits. Or if I'm be honest I could easily sculpt an entire old world army myself ( since it's what I do for my shilling.) But I think if GW fans who looking for Proxy miniatures turned their heads just a little further away from the shiny. They'd find theres a wealth of small indie companies that have been sculpting old school miniatures for decades in white metal and resins. Not just the 3D printed verities. Trish Carden of Marauder Miniatures, and GW fame is still sculpting and has a range of old world compatible pieces at Footsore miniatures.Under the Harrow Hyrst label. The best recommendation I could give to someone who wanted to explore using Proxy miniatures. Is attend a Wargames show not a GW event. Then talk to people running the display games. You'll soon see just how miniature agnostic most games are,and how readily acceptable proxy miniatures are. When the rule system doesn't say Warhammer somewhere on the cover. It's not to say there's anything wrong with being a fan of Warhammer or even wanting just Warhammer products in your collection. Thats up to the individual. But the wider you look the more you see.
I was thinking about the foot not being flat, can't you make it look like the gunner is standing on a dirt mound? I do like third party minis, but sadly gw tournies won't allow those minis :(
Did anyone else catch the little addendum in regards to the old world models? You know, the one where they said that the other models will be made to order. A practice which GW notoriously limits to a couple of months availability for the models.
Very tempted to get the Empire models due to how late they are going to released. My Tomb kings have have yet to even be shipped by GW and my old models were given away a long time ago to Tim.
Loving your videos man, will deffo check out proxy wars for bits I need! Quick question if I don't have access to a cutter, what is the best way to create bases like you have? Love the idea but dread thinking of cutting them out by hand. Cheers!
For people who want to play and can't get models I totally understand this. I feel the same as you, I have been playing GW games since the early 90's. I've never seen before this current situation where we can't buy the models we want on the day of release because they sell out faster than we can buy them and then they not available again for six months or more. One one hand I'm happy that GW in being so successful but on the other hand it does push people away which I don't want to see. I don't know what the solution is but I hope they can figure it out sooner than later.
As someone that wants to play either Orcs and goblins or Beastmen supporting GW beyond buying the rules that was very difficult at launch there isn't much else I can do but 3d print or hunt ebay, I got rid of alot of my fantasy stuff years ago. Seems like they haven't fully committed the system yet, yes there is a cost to printing but that is much less compared to the costs involved in retooling etc for mini production. I really hope it is a success but that hype wave is going to recede quickly in this world of 'whats next'. Great video mate
I'm a bit of a bore on this point, but I think there is really a need for more information out there in the community on which proxy ranges are the best complements to the GW ranges. That way people don't need to choose and, hopefully, some 3D printing can be a complement to a bright future for the Old World official range.
Yep! New player, I was lucky enough to live next to a games workshop store that had some stock, so I was able to get some battle pilgrims and a grail reliquae, and a bsb on royal Pegasus. I ordered the box, waiting on that to be shipped with the delays in memphis, but I am definitely feeling that issue. I want to run some complete blocks of men at arms and peasent bowman, of foot knights and knights of the realm, of grail knights and mounted yeoman. I want a damsel, a mounted damsel, a bsb on horseback, a trebuchet. And I know they have made all the models for these, and yet they are not available for purchase at this time. Fair comment really. If they don't produce the minis people need then people either get their own or the game dies. When you think of the IP argument for Warhammer Fantasy dying and you see the current situation you have to wonder what's going through their minds? I have tons of Orcs and tons of Skaven - don't wanna talk about those - so in some regards there's potentially some good news if I can actually get the models. However I'm not keen on the way they've done the rules either. Several books to reference to play the game. No thank you.
@@MediocreHobbies I ordered some items from them, been over ten days and no response and they don't answer when I've contacted them.. are they usually like this?
we are 8 friends preodrer in the warhammer shop an no one get his rulebook. i have a highelf army, but we all dis. start a new one.... so im printing dwarfs atw because i get no mini´s from the hp.
@MediocreHobbies were they printed at 100% scale? I have these in my library i found a little to big until i scaled them down a little. Otherwise the Highland mini sculpts are awesome for all your Sunland Empire needs ;) lol
I'm looking forward to The Old World, but the lack of availability is a huge concern to me. There are only 2 factions available for sale, everything for those factions is sold out everywhere, and even when they are in stock 75% of it is "online only" or "made to order". The accessibility of old world is what will kill it off more than anything else, People will lose interest and not even bother starting if they're waiting months and months for their preferred faction to release + more months for them to be in stock.
Sounds like GW are making a bit of an attempt to rain in the eBay profiteers starting with the last siege of terra book so hopefully the limited edition boxes will be next. I find my best options is to just reserve up coming releases with my flgs and he will hold the item from what he gets delivered, ofc if they cut his delivery etc then I just have to wait, but honestly that’s what a pile of potential is for, it’s not like we all don’t have something that we can keep busy with for a couple weeks right?
Yeah, looks like we're going to have to go to the 3D print market to be able to get models since they don't make them anymore. And if the RV release now it's only for a week. So if you miss them that's too bad. So sad
Old world isn’t for me but I appreciate your passion for it. GW should have been making these kits months in advance to actually launch successfully. It’s crazy that nearly all new kits are instantly out of stock. There website has nearly all imperial vehicles out of stock too especially the FW stuff which I love. Waiting months for an iron crawler
Like I say in the video it’s easy to say just make more but I do believe there making maximum the amount of stuff they can and still can’t keep up. It’s crazy.
@@MediocreHobbies but they can pre make. So if old world drops say January 1st. They make these kits I assume 2 months before. So if they know old world will be popular securely make them 6 months in advance so they have stock. To be fully sold out is poor planning regardless of production capacity
GW constantly being sold out of everything means that yes, it's probably best to go 3D print. Especially since in many cases these models are 10+ years old, so 3d printing are actually better quality and cheaper to boot. Justifying GW prices when you can get stuff for a fraction of the cost is a no-brainer IMHO.
Stunned with what you show-cased. So fed up with being treated like trash by GW, I've stopped buying their product. But this gives me options. Thank you so much.
I have no objections to people having original sculpt 3D printed units and stuff, they're great for making unique looking armys but I'm with you on the buying stuff from GW to make sure the Old World succeeds because I'm so excited about it. You can tell how much buzz there is around it by the sudden jump in eBay peices for old minis 😂
For most of the armies there are a excellent miniatures for AoS. They are far better minis than most old Warhammer minis. For example I will be starting a goblin and troll based army using almost entirely AoS miniatures. Vampire counts has fantastic miniatures from AoS, I'll be buying them too. If only I could tell GW my money was going towards (real) Warhammer and not AoS.
Nobody ows games workshop anything. Use whatever models you like. Don't feel bad about it. Gw has made a calculation when they released the old world , about how much stuff they needed to sell for the launch to be a success. I'd say they made that mark , if most things has sold out already.
I’m already buying 3rd party, after market or getting 3D prints for all my minis. GW is charging way too much and creating their own fomo demand that I just refuse to buy into. I’ll never play in ‘official’ tournaments so I don’t rightly care what people have to say about my models being official or not. The 3D and 3rd party stuff usually look way better than the older stuff anyways. I’m not paying nostalgia premium.
Printed 93 Mummified Undead OPr " tomb kings" which included 6 chariots, a giant, tomb scorpion, 3 whatever the giant vultures are called lol, 20 cavalry for a $16.99 bottle of resin.. GW isn't needed anymore
Yes, without GW there is no actual game, however, i also keep it practical on the mini side.. if i like the GW sculpt, i buy GW, if i like the STL more, i print 🤷🏻♂️
@@MediocreHobbies Not for WFB . We have editions 1 -9 readily available online if you take 2 mins to look plus there was/is the community project [ and old world was up within hours of release ] . We never stopped playing wfb just because gw stopped making it.
You're not. Everything is relaunching by 2025 but they can't just drop it all at once day 1 Putting aside brets and tk, you've got almost all of the renegade factions, lizardmen, vampire counts, skaven, daemons of chaos, ogre tribes (still totally legal for almost every game, fleshed out rosters and balanced) but also orcs and goblins, beastmen and WoC have an almost full roster too The LITERAL one thing that could kill the game and future support it spending money you would of spent on the above factions is 3D printing a whole army as this game is judged on sales But you do you, don't cry when the corpos cut it
I think of you watch more of my videos on the old world you would see what kind of collecter I am. I’m very much in line of getting all the correct models. I’m a gamesworkshop collector first and foremost and will do my very best to help this game succeed.
Well that just can’t be true. Who brings out a game for people to not spend money. That does not make sense. They of course want new players and an ever growing community. Those people need armies.
Ah yes thats why the game has been flourishing without them the last 7 years. The company is of course needed for support and growth. And that’s all I want for it. To grow and succeed.
no, you arent being forced. third party models do not feel like warhammer to me, and i prefer not to play against them. i print everything non-warhammer though hah
It's weird, but for *every other* wargames company, I imagine a team of intrepid revolutionaries working only for love of the hobby, but my mental picture for GW is forever stuck as the Cigarette Man from X-files plotting malignantly for share-holder profit...😅
@@oneofmanyAndyRobertsons I have no doubt there’s plenty of passionate people working there, but at the end of the day it’s a publicly traded company. That means everything is filtered through shareholders wants and not what’s best for consumers.
@@MediocreHobbies you really think so, Andy? (genuinely curious, not internet snark) I personally see it as an extension of your original question "are we being forced to buy from 3rd parties?" - but as applied to the rules themselves. However, that's due to me not being in the financial position to buy GW's books, nor the cognitive capacity to absorb dense, crunchy rulesets. My nostalgia for middle-hammer is entirely aesthetic, so I'm super open to using a non-GW ruleset to make playing a gorgeous goblin-green battle more of a reality for myself.

It’s a tough one for sure.
Brilliant, thanks for sharing. I love the Old World vibe, and I hope GW gets its act together. In the meantime, it's proxies for me
Ye I feel it will be the Same for a lot of people.
do they ship internationally? to japan for example?
I believe they do yes.
@@MediocreHobbies I ordered some items from them, been over ten days and no response and they don't answer when I've contacted them.. are they usually like this?
I was buying bunch of third party anyway. (Adds some verity) but I need the starter kit
Sounds like a good mix.
we are 8 friends preodrer in the warhammer shop an no one get his rulebook. i have a highelf army, but we all dis. start a new one.... so im printing dwarfs atw because i get no mini´s from the hp.
And I get that. It’s very frustrating
Riekland? Lol how do these bought ones scale against GW?
Perfect size match.
I agree on all points and it really hurts me.
One page rules has an amazing tomb warriors army range
I almost wish their normal warriors were less detailed honestly xD
I shall have a look.
Very true. But as I’ve said I’m so so excited for this and want it be be successful.
Yeah, looks like we're going to have to go to the 3D print market to be able to get models since they don't make them anymore. And if the RV release now it's only for a week. So if you miss them that's too bad. So sad
You clearly didn’t even watch the video. I posted it 1 minute ago and you commented 56 seconds ago. Why would you do that lol.
@@MediocreHobbies I'm a fast watcher. Lol. Plus we're all in the same boat as you're unable to obtain anything
Not quite a no brainer. As if we don’t spend with the the game will die.
Stunned with what you show-cased. So fed up with being treated like trash by GW, I've stopped buying their product. But this gives me options. Thank you so much.
Anytime pal.
Hahahah you noticed that to lol.
GW near me has 2 TK boxes 🤷🏻♂️.
Oh nice.
Some of the armies for sure can be from the AOS range. But so much can not.
my wallet thanks you after showing me that site lol.
Hahaha glad you like it.
Nobody ows games workshop anything. Use whatever models you like. Don't feel bad about it. Gw has made a calculation when they released the old world , about how much stuff they needed to sell for the launch to be a success. I'd say they made that mark , if most things has sold out already.
That’s a very logical point. I like it.
These look really good!
There so nice.
Really interesting
Thanks pal.
The Kings of War range by Mantic Games are pretty good for TOW. Great range of miniatures. Company created by an ex-GW managing director.
And this proving that history is indeed circular! 😂
Hahahahahahaha god damit.
Solid suggestion
Bought myself a Empire of Dust mega army set to use as Tomb Kings. So much better than gw old skeletons.
Do what we had to do in the olden days, wait for the models to be released. I wasn't expecting all nine armies to be released on the first day.
Yeah I know that but this isn’t the olden days, people have access to 3D prints these days 😄
Could always do what GW did years ago and put little cardboard cutouts on square bases. 😅 Play now, collect models later!
Hahahah of only my head would allow that. But the beautiful ranked up armies is the real draw to the game for me.
Some hobby stores still have everything and at lower prices than gw
Potentially such demand there not going to be around for long.
Holy Crap those look nice
Great models rite.
That’s fair.
I'm particularly bothered by my lack of access to a Necrosphinx 🤣
...seriously James, get on it
Hahaha I know rite.
3D Printer FTW, I guess 🤷🏼
I guess lol
Printed 93 Mummified Undead OPr " tomb kings" which included 6 chariots, a giant, tomb scorpion, 3 whatever the giant vultures are called lol, 20 cavalry for a $16.99 bottle of resin.. GW isn't needed anymore
You wouldn’t have a game to print models for without gamesworkshop. I get what your saying it’s just not true. We do need them.
@@Gendokun11 We have 9 editions to pull from and the community project.
@@Gendokun11 and that’s a great way of looking at it.
The game is aimed at people who already have armies. Minis will be released in short order. Calm down and paint/play something else for a few months.
I get your point and I’m aware of that. But also they want it to grow and succeed.
I love fantasy but don’t have any of my old armies. So I’m being forced to by AoS minis at the moment
You're not. Everything is relaunching by 2025 but they can't just drop it all at once day 1
Putting aside brets and tk, you've got almost all of the renegade factions, lizardmen, vampire counts, skaven, daemons of chaos, ogre tribes (still totally legal for almost every game, fleshed out rosters and balanced) but also orcs and goblins, beastmen and WoC have an almost full roster too
The LITERAL one thing that could kill the game and future support it spending money you would of spent on the above factions is 3D printing a whole army as this game is judged on sales
But you do you, don't cry when the corpos cut it
I think of you watch more of my videos on the old world you would see what kind of collecter I am. I’m very much in line of getting all the correct models. I’m a gamesworkshop collector first and foremost and will do my very best to help this game succeed.
The game is obviously for people who already have their armies at that point of time. Even GW wouldn't be able to release 9 armies at once.
Well that just can’t be true. Who brings out a game for people to not spend money. That does not make sense. They of course want new players and an ever growing community. Those people need armies.
@@MediocreHobbiesBut GW needs also cashflow, so they will create FOMO after FOMO each quarter... Same story as with 40k and AoS 😅
I'll tell you a secret...you never had to buy GW minis to play Warhammer - any manufacturers models work just fine.
Ah yes thats why the game has been flourishing without them the last 7 years. The company is of course needed for support and growth. And that’s all I want for it. To grow and succeed.
The entire Orc & Goblin roster is on Cults for free, just saying
Hahah I know I know.
no, you arent being forced. third party models do not feel like warhammer to me, and i prefer not to play against them. i print everything non-warhammer though hah
Ye I’m kinda the same. I much prefer playing with and against the real models.
But these are 32 mmm...
They’re 3D prints, can be scaled to any size!
thanks!!!@@MediocreHobbies I forgot!
I just cant shake the feeling that the old world is just a nostalgia bate cash grab by gw.
I certainly hope not. I worked with GW for 15 years. There really not as bad as people think.
Just play kings of war.
There's also the excellent Hobgoblin ruleset by Mike Hutchinson of Gasland's fame.
That’s a rather silly argument. As I have so much love and nostalgia for warhammer fantasy. That’s almost a separate topic.
@@MediocreHobbies you really think so, Andy? (genuinely curious, not internet snark)
I personally see it as an extension of your original question "are we being forced to buy from 3rd parties?" - but as applied to the rules themselves.
@@oneofmanyAndyRobertsons are you saying use kings of war minitures to play warhammer or just play kings of war. I’m all for playing it but not as a replacement for old wolrd.
@@MediocreHobbies hmm, honestly I'm not sure what I'm advocating, other than that I'm delighted to see this enthusiastic nostalgia sweep the gaming community and I'm even more excited to see how people will creatively make it their own, be it with physical proxies or homebrew rules. Exciting times to have hobby, ADHD, in short ;P
3rd parties, recasters or scalpers its insane how poor thos lainch has been.
Yeah it's just a very small studio trying to do too much at once
Nobody is FORCING you to do anything. Stop whining.
Did you watch the video or comment based on the title?
@@MediocreHobbies totally based on the title
I happily bought raging heroes dark elves to play fantasy years ago. The models are just so much better than GW.
Just looked them up there. Nice enough sculpts. Not my prefers style. But good stand ins.
