Very insightful video, I learned a lot, especially about the clearly defined metabolic changes as intensity increases. I'd be interested to know your thoughts on how closely the Garmin VO2max estimates correlate to an actual test. I both run and cycle, and Garmin consistently estimates my cycling VO2 is 3 points higher than running (53 as opposed to 50, I'm 56 year old btw). Is that just an indication that my running economy is poor, or are the calculations for running and cycling so different that no comparisons can be made? I would assume that actual VO2max is an absolute figure irrespective of the mode of exercise? Presumably the running estimate is based purely on HR and pace (taking no account of elevation) whereas I assume the cycling calculation is based on HR and power as measured at the crank, and not on speed therefore not skewed by elevation? I completely understand that the Garmin numbers are just estimates, but my predicted race finish times (for running) are not too far off the mark, perhaps a bit optimistic, but certainly in the ballpark.

Thanks. The Garmin estimates are based on how your HR stats fit the normal distribution for their model. For many people they work fine as a guide to it raising and falling. Sometime the numbers can match very well, sometimes they are well off. They are more likely to be good if you use your HR strap a lot, and are quite average. The numbers tend to have a greater degree of error in exceptionally fit people. With unfit people there are often other factors at play. Hope that helps.

To everyone considering this test, try and also get a diagnosis of EIB, or exercise induced bronchospasm, and get prescribed albuterol or something similar. A place that does the usual FTP test will probably not have a doctor on board who can prescribe, so you may need to go see another specialist sports doctor who does performance testing similar to this. Almost everyone suffers EIB to one degree or another, and don’t even realize, and a good way to tell to what degree is get before and after testing done once on the albuterol. It will really help with your breathing at the start of a ride too.

This is what you might expect from a medical Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test , most likely in a private clinic, after a referral. Your not going to get any kind of diagnosis for any condition from an athlete testing centre. Thanks for your input.

Why the hell would I use a steroid ? No that’s not the answer.

@@Thatsbannanas-d8c it works good. It’s basically what Froome got caught overdosing on, way way over the allowable limit.

Great Video Paul, I am a Sports and Exercise Scientist from Belfast, Ireland. We have recently purchase the VO2 Master, it would be great to get a call to pick your brain on some of the results. If this was a possibility I'd love to pass you my email. Great work!!

This was very good. Here in New York City those tests are very expensive and quite hard to find. I am shocked you run them ar your shop. Nobody does that here. Props to you.

Thank you. You will have to come visit one day. We are not really a shop. More like a pro team facility for everyone.
