I grew up in Japan and my dad used to have an 8 track karaoke machine at home. I remember there was another kind of 8-track karaoke tape, which has 4 songs in stereo, but the vocal on the right channel and backing track on the left channel. While practicing you can mix in the vocal until you remember the melody. And then you turn it all the way to the left and sing it on your own. The audio comes out as mono. That is what the balance control is for and that is why it has the on/off switch for balance.
Due to an infection, I spent 11 days in hospital this December. I can't stress enough how many Techmoan videos I watched in the bloody hospital bed with AirPods in my ears, making the time go by. Just to say, thanks, Mat, and a merry Christmas!

YES! I do know those lyrics. The original artist who did Jingle Bell Rock, Bobby Helms, did a full Christmas album in 1970 and it's been one of my favorite Christmas albums since I was a kid. He performs many classics including this full version of Jingle Bells as well as obscure Christmas songs like I Wanna go to Santa Clause Land. It's a red vinyl album cover titled Jingle Bell Rock with Bobby in an oval in the center surrounded by the names of the rest of the tracks listed going down the left and right of the big oval. Country Christmas CLASSIC!
Sounds like this device could do with all the lubricant being removed and redone. It is likely quite gummed up, and the reason it improves as it is being used as the heat is starting to loosen some of the mechanism, but this will get bad again when it is cold again
I love karaoke. I have an autoimmune that is solidifing my lungs and I took up singing to keep them in better condition. Keep doing these oddities they're the best!
When I see a Techmoan video appear, but it's about a Karaoke machine, I let the video run, I take out a device that I need to repair: I start the repair and I listen to and watch the video at the same time 😁
Has anyone ever told you that you can't sing, Mat? In the very best of ways - you don't take yourself seriously, you have a laugh and honestly, it's bloody infectious. I love the Karaoke videos BECAUSE you might sing!! (I also love them having been a "KJ" in the UK in years gone by, and having seen the advancements in tech... I started out with awful midi files on a PC with a CRT monitor on a stand, moved through to the Sunfly CDGs eventually, and ended that career using them on a PC, with blended video backgrounds, projection, and the lot.) For all the 8 tracks are quite limited and you'd need a lot for the 2000 or so songs I carried, the orchestrations are great. Of course, everything's online now - stereo, separate vocal tracks etc. there's even one site you can choose which instruments are in it - good for bands! Anyway - karaoke, 8 track, flashing led spectrum analysers and everything else - thanks for a great year, and a .... Hopefully peaceful ..... Christmas to you and yours

Back in the late 70's, I got several surplus 8-track player chassis and actually modified one to play 8 different programs. It was used in a hospital to play inspirational messages at 8AM and 8PM.

I have to say I seriously enjoyed the warbled audio that 8-Track machine was outputting early on in the video! Completely reminded me of messing with my parents 8-Track players as a child. In particular my mother had a GE 3-5507B portable AM/FM 8-Track that had a single large speaker on it. The wow and flutter on it would go off the charts if you moved it while playing an 8-Track. If the batteries were low if would play far too slowly and so on. As a young child I spent too many hours messing with that machine. :)
Forget the Karaoke functions, you found an early-80's, silver-faced 8-track player made by Kenwood! I know guys who would pay money for one. Very cool. Merry Christmas!

I had an 8 track Motorola Quadraphonic player in 1967 Mini going back rather a lot of years. Because of the four tracks for the quad set-up it only had two channels and the tape was twice the length. There weren't many cartridges made that were Quad mastered. Pink Floyd - Money sounded good though with each speaker in turn putting out the cash register sound. Happy days, well some of them were.

Archiving the history of Japanese karaoke, even in youtube format like this, is super important. It's a *massive* aspect of their culture even today.
