- This video examines the makeup and use of my home made impact mill rock crusher for liberating gold from gold ore. I explain hoe to make a rock crusher or at least how I made this chain mill. This homemade crusher is one piece of mining equipment I use in gold prospecting. I use this to free the gold from high grade gold ore samples from some of my hard rock gold mines.

I always enjoy seeing everybody has designs on impact Mills. I like your solid bar between the two chains to generate air current. never thought of that one. that's why I like watching your videos is because we think alike but I never thought about that. That's why it's always good to communicate and learn from others. I would put a spring-loaded or a leather flap over your opening because particles are still shooting out of there at high speed. spring-loaded trap leather door or rubber door. otherwise I really like your unit. I'll probably think about incorporating the hammer in the middle also or maybe a little closer to the entrance. I would have loved to set up at the back where you drive it without your shield on. Hey buddy, its Mark from Pender Island, formerly of Chilliwack. I would take the final exhaust hole and direct into anther bucket with baffles. Vacuum at the end of that. Ive had succes capturing dust from or 4" bore rockdrill with double chambering, cheers!

I do not know if someone already pointed out that you're right to look for gold on the contact between iron and quartz :) i have a old memory (more than 10 years ago, when i was studying geology at university) that gold and other precious elements are a secondary deposit inside thermal-water. As it happens, when there is a earthquake or massive movement between two big deposits of rocks, hot water can come up from deep, carrying a lot of things with it and it set up minerals and precious elements to fill up the crack made by that movement. Hope that will help you in someway and good job on gold hunting, i discovered your youtube channel not so long ago and i'm loving it!

After watching this and others from RUclips, I built one by myself and is working well. But I fixed the discharge funnel by the side but discovered that the pipe before the mesh net was accumulating larger stone particles on the passage before the net hence and was not pulling the milled materials well hence I repositioned the discharge funnel under the drum machine body and it started pulling well and no more resident particles.
+Jeff Owelle) Yep! Thats what he could try, putting the outlet mesh in segments all along the bottom of the drum and let gravity do the work. If the chains wear out too soon he could build them back up with Tungsten welding rods. I run them along the inside of the drum if Im sampling a lot of really hard rock.He would have to have a different design to open the drum in two halves to do that though?
nice! I am trying to learn to make one in hopes that I can find the stuff to do it with I am still new to it but i did find silver and a tiny amount of gold in quartz.
I want one of those little jackhammers... that would come in handy doing all sorts of things.
I do like the the mill -it's six chains wide.. Have you ever used a chain mill wet? With water fed into the rock hopper Mount Baker get much less dust and can run the wet slurry straight into a sluice or shaker table, maybe you could run your mill wet and feed it directly into your gold cube.

Dan, Great home made crusher. What did it cost to make it?
I crush down my ore with an air chisel, and hold the rocks in one hand with a heavy glove. Got them down to 1" minus really easy, and no injury to my hand. I used an "el cheepo" Harbor Frt. Tools air chisel. It held up really well doing a 5 gal bucket or ore too.

Your crushed ore collection bucket could benefit by being of the thien-baffle type, or a 'dust-deputy' (trade mark proprietary brand item). it would extend the life of your shop-vac filter and stop the dusty fine stuff getting in the lungs. Thien = $10 to make, dust deputy = $40 to buy.
You can extend the life of some chains by adding a striking face of hard/tool steel at the tip of the last link. Railway track is high manganese steel because that wear hardens in use (so are rock crusher jaw plates).
Hmm that's actually a pretty good suggestion and lo and behold you're one of the rare rare comments I've seen talking about railway steel that actually recommended it for a good purpose and even gave the (very basic and maybe abit oversimplified) reason why it should be good.
FYI RS is very varied though from place to place, even length to length and what part of the track it's off etc.
Alloyed steel such as high chromium (stainless) tool steel is used more and more too, often with added vanadium, titanium, and/or tin too.... but if he found that it'd be even better.

Actually that center bar does more than you think slows wobble on the shaft a bit close might put opposing winglets an inch off it on each side would increase air flow and lower mill inner temp increasing life of inner parts and bearing on the shaft
materials like chain from snow chains / 4340 steel from vehicle sway bars /coil spring material, leaf springs.. // ar plate (hardox 450 - 500) / u-joint bearing caps.... and arc welding HARD FACE ROD ...

I was wondering how long the housing will last. It looks like at the most 3/16" thick. We spent the $$$ for a Keene RC46 Jaw over rolls and are quite pleased with it. WE have a very hard quartz and will actually wear through 1/4 jaw plates in 8 hours if we don't hard face them. Still running on the original rolls after 20 tons.
That pan at the end looks really great. I wish our ore was that rich. You might check out my video on how to pan micro fine gold and you should be able to easily clean that up into almost pure gold. I weill now check out some more of your videos.

Hard Rock University my hopes are that because the impact on the wall is at such a low angle, the abrasion will be minimalized. I have not noticed much wear yet, except for under the solid hammer.

It's an idea. I don't really worry about any of them.
@@Danhurd in the Sierra foothills. Rangers talk about bear explosion, cats waiting in trees, rattlers mid-morning (they swim). Went alone and something stalked me. I think a cat as I found a fresh print where I panned.

Okay, I enjoyed your video but I have a design question. I have seen square crushing chambers, octagon and round. Which is better and why?
Solid round pipe that is made to spec is a lot easier and cheaper to buy than welding up a octagonal tube , he is relying on the hammers to do the breaking by themselves. Which in my opinion is better because its a lot easier changing out chains than replacing the whole chamber and if you made octagonal it would increase wear hugely to the chamber and thus its life would be reduced massively and increase the likelyhood of a catastrophic failure, regardless you would pretty much need to re make the whole unit.

+Garion Porter Not many (if any at all) "online" prospectors will talk about this; but depending on your location, gear, level of knowledge etc. as a small scale prospector you may make anywhere from $20 - $400/day; or you may not even cover your expenses, or you may stumble upon a 4 ounce nugget, it really depends :D

nice machine, what grain size you have on exit? how many kilo per hour? is this easy to clean between samples? =)
+Aleksandr Goldyrev I have never calculated the throughput of the machine. it is screen down to a 1/8" but the powder that comes out is very much smaller, with only the od 1/16" piece left. I would guess around 100-200 mesh. Cleaning is easy. And if it is important to have a perfect clean. (if you are running a new sample and need to know for sure) then running a couple pieces of pure quartz helps scour the inside nicely.

The design has error, because the side panel runs on thread o fasting bolts.
That needs to be fix before the contraption will have commercial value.
The blots on the side panel hold the output screen in place and are there for quick;y changing screens.

Dan, where is a good source for the large pipe (circular) that you used for the housing? My application is to crush charcoal for biochar uses, so it not as tough as rocks, but I want to build it right the first time!

How do you run all that fine powder and assure you don't lose heavy metals? Are you panning ALL that powder, sluicing It, or using a bowl. It would seem if something accidentally goes wrong during a wash, i.e. too fast over riffles, bad angle etc. wouldn't this guarantee 100% loss of your pay? It seems too easy to lose any fine gold here. It would also seem you might be pulverizing any precious stones, or losing out on some precious non malleable, heavy metals. Am I wrong in this observation?

If it crushes everything to fine powder, seems like any gold flakes be pulverized too making it more difficult to separate in the end process.
+Cecy Tx I either makes small flat flakes or little round balls out of the gold. The gold being malleable stays together and does not get powdered.
