Take a relaxing walk around the Cagsawa Ruins in Daraga Albay Bicol Philippines. This walking tour will take you around historical landmark. The Cagsawa Ruins are the remnants of a 16th-century Franciscan church, the Cagsawa church. The church was originally built in the town of Cagsawa in 1587 but was burned down and destroyed by Dutch pirates in 1636. It was rebuilt in 1724 by Fr. Francisco Blanco, but was again destroyed, along with the town of Cagsawa, on February 1, 1814, during the eruption of the Mt. Mayon Volcano. The town of Cagsawa was founded by San Pedro Bautista in 1587 and was dedicated under the patronage of Saint James the Greater. At first it was a visita of Camalig, Albay, and later it became a parish and a separate town. The original church was drstroyed by the Dutch raids during the late 1600's and the present church seen in the ruins was built by Fr. Blanco during the early 1700's. Cagsawa, Budiao and other neighboring towns were destroyed, got hit by pyroclastic flow and slightly buried due to the rain of sand and rocks during the worse and most destructive eruption of Mayon Volcano ever recorded in February 1, 1814. The calamity made the survivors relocate to what is now the town of Daraga (a former Visita of Cagsawa) and others say that some of the survivors relocated to Pilar Sorsogon. - Source: Posts of Sir Abdon Balde about Cagsawa.
