Hey Eric, Three weeks ago I posted a question about what I should do with my time and after a really inspiring comment from you I duct taped my laptop shut and started living life. Boy, has it been one helluva three weeks! I started building my own desk (which is both unique and beautifully designed and really fun to make), I bought a guitar, started drawing, connected with some old friends, took a few long walks and did some more stuff. Thank you for inspiring me! I will keep you posted when I have more news!
+HarryYese ...have to say, this completely made my day my friend! imagine what you can do in a year's time with this bonus time away from the screen...now the trick is to put time to work for you so you can continue to enjoy making the things you want to make rather than be tied to a 'dollars-for-hours' exchange. much success to you...cheers...
30X40 Design Workshop You just made my day as well! I've been looking for a way to generate a passive income for a while, but it seems hard to come by. I'm sure some day in the near future I'll find something that suits me!
Revisiting these years later, I'm still blown away by how much education and insight you offer the viewer. That said, now that you have the mechanics of the format mastered, maybe follow up with more editions of these style guides? Thank you, as ever, for this gift to the world of design.
Great video!!! It’s like a crash course in color. Thanks Arch. Eric for keeping us motivated in our endeavor to be creative environmental design-creators!
I am a second year architect student and these videos really help me elevate my designs. I have a fair amount of knowledge about color, design, structure, light etc but you touch on a lot of points that i hadn't really thought about as much. Thank you! keep it up!
This is such a well-made video and an awesome channel. I'm very interested in architecture and I'm basically just watching all the 30x40 videos to learn more. The amount of useful information crammed into these videos is fantastic.
Hello Eric, just dropping by to give you big props on the videos you make. I am a beginning first year architecture student at a college in Los Angeles and all the time I'm looking for really cool and interesting things to inspire me, to dream bigger and I found your channel and i immediately got stuck watching your videos. I subscribed and will definitely keep watching for inspiration. I don't have any questions yet, as I find your videos very informative, clear and straight to the point, but I'm sure I'll storm in with questions as I dig into architecture more. It'd be so cool to see one of your projects first hand! Thanks again, Jesus M.
Hi! I am an architecture student from Brazil and every time I watch videos about architecture made by or for architects I see that you guys have good (when not excellent) drawing skills. Could you talk about your formation and if the architecture schools in US pay a lot of attention to this artistic side of our profession. Your channel is great and I always learn one thing or another from your videos! Keep the good work!
I just had my first attempt at site analysis photography yesterday, really should have reviewed my photos on site though with the sunshine, seeing the digital screen wasnt to easy. Having now seen my images, they are all crisp and clear but I think I have focused to close in for many of my photos so showing context within the site was lacking. Think I need to go back and try again :-)
Hi Eric Great as usual ... I love the way you speak about a subject and then find it is relevant to all the creative disciplines... the depth of each of your videos whilst being concise is also amazing.... thanks for your insights into so many areas of relevance to every one of us regardless of profession...🤐
I really like your videos as you are providing information that is very important and not explained in architecture school but acquired by experience. Really appreciate your initiative. thank you.
My question is: as a student what other activities can I do to earn (As I have a lengthy architect accessories wishlist) the things which actually help me even in my career! Ex: photography, vlogs, etc
GREEK GOD try going to art classes. like drawing or painting. photograhy will help you see better. music helps you focus. you would be surprised with the things you can do to help. the real trick is to find something which takes you away from architecture. to help you balance your life. dont fo too deep, otherwise you will get fed up with work.
*work, that's the 100% best you can do because all will be real life situation experience.* - if you work in a construction firm you will learn lots of technical stuff no one is going to show or even mention while you study - if you work in an architecture firm you will learn lots of design process, materials use, light/wind tricks and so on that no one is going to show or even mention while you study. - if you work in a design-related firm (furniture, interior design, graphic design, etc) you will learn lots of design process, materials, techniques, marketing strategies and so on that no one is going to show or even mention while you study. so... yeah, just work because photography, learning a new program, vloging, model making, rendering, post production, etc etc etc is stuff you can learn by your own with 1h a day and when you get to the end of the university you will see you have like 2+ years doing all of that = experience and portfolio material.
I used to work as content writer for software company.. this was 180 from architecture..buy it has helped me in my career as an architect. The research that goes into doing this job made research work in masters course fun and easy. Also it pays well and it's a break from hectic study schedule.
gdmn, I am so happy I found you and your videos! Although I am working as a sculptor actually, but being influenced a lot by architecture, I love being inspired by architects!
I'm so thankful I found your channel. I was so skeptical on going to study architecture but just by watching your videos my hope is back. you have probably talked about it already but I'm curious : how did you get interested in architecture?
glad I could rekindle your confidence! i've added your question to the quickfire q&a list...be sure to sub and click the notification bell to be notified when I upload this thursday for the answer...
Eric! I must thank you, you always come and save me in different moments of my life as an architecture student. My question: In your opinion, what does it take to be a Pritzker winner? And how does the world starts noticing great architects?
Always love the videos and references you supply as well as informative and practical advice ...keep up the good work. Can you do a video on the use of 1) light & shadows and 2) developing landscape concepts for architecture?
One thing that's never touched on in discussions of color is how the people who will live there look against the color palette. I have an olive complexion, and while I might want to use color to physically or emotionally warm up a room (especially here in Wyoming) the reality is that my skin tone against warm colors make me look ill. Against a cool gray I look rosy and healthy, so I stick with cool main colors and use warmer colors sparingly to accent.
my sister pointed that out to me with umbrellas. She has a yellow one that made her look sickly. Then she bought a pinky-red one and her face looked rosy and healthy instantly.
Thanks for these videos. I just started my first semester in college majoring in architecture. I'd really a appreciate a video on the basics of model making. I've been having trouble cutting chipboard and other materials. I have an assignment on something called "Kit of Parts". Totally lost on that. We're required to make planes; (2) 4cm x 1cm, (3) 8cm x 3cm, (2) 6 cm x 4cm, (1) 12 cm x 5cm, and a cube of 6cm x 6cm x 6cm. All made out of chipboard. We're exploring three-dimensional systems of organization and space making. I need to keep balance, symmetry, and stasis in mind while doing this project. I'm allowed to notch the parts when intersecting but I can't cut them in half or anything. My composition should be able to sit flat on a table on TWO sides. All the planes and solids must be connected perpendicular to each other and layering planes on top of each other is not allowed. If you have any tips, I'd really appreciate it. And thanks again for making these videos. I'm always watching whenever you upload.
nice...first semester...i remember this assignment...i have an entire series on model-making, you can watch it here: ruclips.net/p/PLuJj3iQpiK3s5wayt-o5FplJKSp9pwOfC stay safe out there...keep those fingers clear of the blade and get some sleep!
Hey Eric, hope your doing well. Loved the video and colour is so important if you know how to use it properly. I like getting a lot of my references from concept art. Lots of good advice and inspiration as always !! Thanks a bunch Eric My question for the q & a would be what should we as Architects be doing to improve our cities and designs for the future ?
Big thks for this VIDEO Eric... I am a Civil Engineer, but I love architecture and would love to know more. Bcoz of my background some of the concepts u share are new to me, can u kindly recommend a book about colors and light... Thks again!
Great content, alot to follow. Although, with my education, I was able too do so 😊 Side note: the Hard Cuts in video editing made it difficult to follow visually and verbally. Even though you made complete sense. Just SUBSCRIBED, looking forward to seeing your other content. Ps: perhaps you could interject how ethnic groups use different color palettes. As in this video, Scandinavian, Swiss even Bohemian styles can fit this narrative.
Amazing video :) Very happy to learn so many things on this channel......and my question is: can you share about your thesis research topic and what tips can you give for a final year student who is doing his/her thesis? Thank you!!
I enjoy your videos , must take a lot of time to create -re: color I agree with most of your premises on light ,color, and color theory however (being an interior designer with 40 years of practice) I do feel you as most of the architects I collaborate with over the years, have a very different approach to color that short changes it's potential contribution to interior spaces , and it's potential psycho therapeutic contributions to it's inhabitants and the interior space's ambiance . Honesty in materials is important , but so is the human element ( those who inhabit the space) perhaps since they (architect) are focused on creating the building / exterior materials juncture they feel reticent to deviate when addressing the interior 's color . Modern architecture, because of it's premises/ underpinnings, tends to overly organically influence this decision .I find it Interesting looking at how differently these two design disciplines approach this subject. Keeping a balanced approach is at the root of good design. Just as an landscape architect can be worth his weight in gold to a project.
beeing close to finishing my university carrier in architecture your whole channel should be basic requirement in the first semester. So many people would have higher standards ...
Great work! I really enjoy your videos. I wanted to get to know more about the use of the sun in designing. I will refer to this video! Thanks again! :-)
Thank you for your videos they have been helping me along the way for my schooling! They are a welcomed break from school while still getting knowledge pertaining to school. I was wondering where you got those color binders from ? Or if you could do an updated what you use for design processes
12:33 in South Africa I’ve had a paint colour set from representatives of a paint company, gone to the paint store that the paint swatch is from and asked about it there and they had no idea the colour existed 😂😂
Hi, just discovered your site and I'm loving it. I'm a first year architectural technologist student in Canada (mature student). Just wondering if you have any advice on where to get prevailing wind information (especially if you can't visit the site more than once). Thanks!
My question (already told you but... i insist) how you learn to build? to the point you get enough knowledge to go on with your own projects almost alone? Also i think you missed a really important fact about colors in architecture: you talked about the temperature feeling but not about how the color actually change the real temperature of a room + how the geographic/country location matters, for example isn't the same to get the temperature of 2 rooms (same materials, dimensions, etc) painted in black with 2 windows one to the east and the other to the west, one room located somewhere in the North or South of the planet and the other one in the mid or in Australia. Keep going with the awesome vids.
Hi Sir I am form india . I couldn't buy your architect startup tool kit because of no creditcard and no paypal account so kindaly help. Thanks for such usefull guidance. stay blessed. Javed Attari
my question is: how good is an interior design background for someone who wishes to get a master in architecture and eventually get licensed. Also, what is the difference between the work of an interior designer, and an architect who works/specializes within interiors, or is there even a difference?! Would mean a lot to me if these questions were answered, i've been doing research and always get a round about answer :(
I don’t distinguish between the two, architects do both and that’s certainly how my practice operates. I’d focus on your architecture curriculum above an interior design focused one because that will capture both disciplines. hope that helps...
khalid hassan I have both education and work experience in both fields. There are differences and similarities. Architects are licensed and must be licensed to practice. Interior designers do not have to be but must work with licensed professionals, general contractors/structural engineer/architects to get projects approved. Interior design background may help you visualize spaces more intimately, but you can also learn this on the job. Every architect and designer has strengths and weaknesses. Focus on your style and methods of design. This will help you figure out what form is a good fit and you can possibly learn interior design along the way. I'm focusing on my certification and debating on whether to to the AREs later on. Good luck!
Hey found your channel recently and its teaching me alot my question is did you always know you wanted to be an architect and what is the advice you wish you got when u first joined architecture school
Hello Eric! I want to ask if the Sherwin-Williams sample kit is also accessible to architecture students like me? And can I buy it online? Thank you very much for your videos! You really helped me a lot!
FOR THE Q&A: after getting our masters in architecture you think we should do a specialist MASTERS ( Urbanism - sustainable architecture...) OR START WORKING ???
you should keep your titles, or any written text, on screen for a few seconds more as they go away too quickly. I would also suggest a 1/3 of a second audio crossfade between your hard cuts. you can do this by setting default audio transitions and then applying the audio transitons universally. Whatsoftware are you using to make these videos? Adobe Premiere Pro? or FCP?
hey +Ryan Kyle...not to give anything away, but the title sequences are a place for me to hide easter eggs...some viewers are pretty good at finding them...curious now? i use fcpx...
Thank you so this great video and channel. I would like to know where is it possible to get a sample kit for colours like yours? I checked in supplier website that it doesn't come as an option. Thanks
Very nice video. What is a challenge you've overcome as a architect that you are proud of? What is a challenge you have yet to overcome and are excited about the struggle to conquer it?
that was very good!! I am dusting off my color theory books from my certificate in residential planning. .kitchen design. It helps to have a point of reference through a lecture. Then be able to research from that point!! I have been trying to do this on my own and failing but watching your videos has given me a spark of hope. Thanks for your wealth of knowledge. You know I am not in the position to be that architect but I want to be able to help and architect draw plans in cad and brainstorm. Take on jobs or freelance. Is this a possibility to aim for? Is there schooling online that I can take like skillshare etc. where the classes are affordable. Like a community college. I am working around my boundaries. Thanks
glad the vids are helping you find launching points for further research...freelancing CAD drafters are quite common, so certainly a possibility for you...determine the programs they're most frequently using in your area (Revit, Autocad, Vectorworks, ArchiCad)... hope that helps!
Another fine presentation. Thank you... During the designs of your colour palette, do you create relationships beteeen the colour and the surface texture? -more specifically, in circumstances where you would portray the character of the colour in a surface texture that a blind person could understand. Just moments ago, I watched "Using Materials To Tell A Story: An Architectural Essay" and in it you highlighted how some of the texture was accessible for appreciation at eye level so I imagine how opportune it would be to use those colour-texture emphases...
hey kirshna.. :D You have to learn photoshop in such a way that you should be able to do whatever your mind feels like doing ..exactly how you think it should be and for that I think you should understand the basic patterns and procedures (keys and tools)to attain a task .
yup...i do this sometimes for search/SEO reasons...one term may be a more popular term for search, but another will visually appeal to a different group of people looking for information...doing it this way I reach both...little insider trick...
Hi Eric Firstly i would like to thank for doing such great videos .Secondly, do suggest any books related to the topic in the above video thanks in advance :)
Perhaps this is the best channel on RUclips.
Certainly among the best.
kind words my friend...appreciate it!
i am not even a designer and I agree.
Yep, it probably s the best.
Certainly the most selfless.
I totally agree!
My architecture class teacher made me watch it in class. I loved it!
Your videos used in college, something to be proud of.
Hey Eric,
Three weeks ago I posted a question about what I should do with my time and after a really inspiring comment from you I duct taped my laptop shut and started living life. I think you pack the most information into one short video than anyone else on RUclips. Thanks again for an amazing video !
Revisiting these years later, I'm still blown away by how much education and insight you offer the viewer.
That said, now that you have the mechanics of the format mastered, maybe follow up with more editions of these style guides?
Thank you, as ever, for this gift to the world of design.
great vid again. after 20 years at the painting academy and 15 yrs practice this vid really hit the spot!
cheers my friend...appreciate you returning here each week and sharing your experience in the comments...
finaly a video that give's a good basic on architecture and color
Great video!!! It’s like a crash course in color. Thanks Arch. Eric for keeping us motivated in our endeavor to be creative environmental design-creators!

I've been struggling with finding videos that take interior design seriously. This is an amazing resource.
I am enrolling on architecture course once I have completed my Diploma I am so glad that I have found your channel... Thank you :-)
Hello Eric, just dropping by to give you big props on the videos you make. thank you my friend...glad to have you with us + nice to (virtually) meet you...
I'd love to see what you can share with us about lights in the architecture. Artificial and natural. Loving the series man!
Good job.
for sure...thanks...
Love it! I am doing an essay on the impact of the coloured light on my client and how they feel in the space. Very useful, thank you 😊

Thank you so much for all you share Eric. I've really enjoyed your book too. As a student of Architecture, your work has been really helpful.
This was fascinating and thought provoking. Extremely helpful. Many thanks for all the inspiration and education.
Hi Eric,
Watching you from Cape Town South Africa. I am learning a lot of things from you. Thank you very much. God bless u
thanks for checking in, nice to (virtually) meet you Mahefa
omg where was this channel all this time. you are so knowledgeable! so cool to have stumbled on this.

thanks for the suggestion...

its all a balancing act. too much archi ans you lose the edge. you lose your self in delusions of self grandeur...
*work, that's the 100% best you can do because all will be real life situation experience.*
- if you work in a construction firm you will learn lots of technical stuff no one is going to show or even mention while you study

question for your Q&A:
out of all of your projects that you have done which one is your favourite?
good question...i'll add it to the list...

could you do a video talking about ladders, stairs and steps?
thank you +Pacha McTacha ...I'll see what I can do about your request...
Great video..very informative. I would be curious to know which books influenced you the most as an architect.
I'm so tired of neutrals. I want rich lush colour, not twenty shades of drab!
Hi, just discovered your site and I'm loving it. I'm a first year architectural technologist student in Canada (mature student). Just wondering if you have any advice on where to get prevailing wind information (especially if you can't visit the site more than once). Thanks!
Is funny today I had a lecture of color and light were I study architecture. Thank you for this video.
you're quite welcome my friend...
I think that vegetation and insects are also a good source of inspiration for color compositions
totally agree...thanks my friend...

Keep going with the awesome vids.
thanks i'll add yours to the q&a list...cheers...

Javed Attari
cheers my friend...you're quite welcome...
you guys have the same problem there?
my question is: how good is an interior design background for someone who wishes to get a master in architecture and eventually get licensed.

You really helped me a lot!
it's available to architecture businesses and you have one, right? (wink-wink)
my question for the q&a: how do you attract new clients to an architecture studio, what kind of marketing is done in this environment?
added to the quickfire q&a list...be sure to sub and click the notification bell to be notified when I upload this thursday for the answer!
Insanely good! Thanks!
FOR THE Q&A: after getting our masters in architecture you think we should do a specialist MASTERS ( Urbanism - sustainable architecture...) OR START WORKING ???
def start working...
you should keep your titles, or any written text, on screen for a few seconds more as they go away too quickly. I would also suggest a 1/3 of a second audio crossfade between your hard cuts. you can do this by setting default audio transitions and then applying the audio transitons universally. Whatsoftware are you using to make these videos? Adobe Premiere Pro? or FCP?
hey +Ryan Kyle...not to give anything away, but the title sequences are a place for me to hide easter eggs...some viewers are pretty good at finding them...curious now?
i use fcpx...
you are great Eric
What is the name of the architect he refers to? George what? Is there a link maybe, of that project?
Regards
Can you share more examples on Colors that changed the space enteirly than the form of building.
Thank you so this great video and channel. I would like to know where is it possible to get a sample kit for colours like yours? I checked in supplier website that it doesn't come as an option. Thanks
Very nice video.
What is a challenge you've overcome as a architect that you are proud of? What is a challenge you have yet to overcome and are excited about the struggle to conquer it?
great question my friend...i'll add it to the list for the q&a vid
that was very good!!
That Does!!! Thanks Again!!!
Thank you for another great video!
nice editing work
Another fine presentation. Thank you...
During the designs of your colour palette, do you create relationships beteeen the colour and the surface texture? -more specifically, in circumstances where you would portray the character of the colour in a surface texture that a blind person could understand.
Just moments ago, I watched "Using Materials To Tell A Story: An Architectural Essay" and in it you highlighted how some of the texture was accessible for appreciation at eye level so I imagine how opportune it would be to use those colour-texture emphases...
interesting question...i'll add it to the list...cheers...
Loads of great info here thanks :D
good to see you in the comments again +MaZEEZaM!
What is that brown color on the wall there in your office
Hi Eric, in addition to this, how do you use form to compose the aesthetic? thanks. Have you made a video to explore that?
Specifically implied on elevation design
What app did you use here to extract the colours?
Thank you for the video its very informative.
glad you found it helpful...
Sir, As i m leaning Auto CAD, is Photoshop important if so to what degree i should learn to use it or other software??
great question, i'll add it to the list for the q&a vid...
hey kirshna.. :D You have to learn photoshop in such a way that you should be able to do whatever your mind feels like doing ..exactly how you think it should be and for that I think you should understand the basic patterns and procedures (keys and tools)to attain a task .
Thanks for titleing "How I.."! I really appreciate that. However in the video it says "how to..". You can't have it all I suppose.
yup...i do this sometimes for search/SEO reasons...one term may be a more popular term for search, but another will visually appeal to a different group of people looking for information...doing it this way I reach both...little insider trick...
HEY 30X40, love your videos. Keep up the great work.
