It's a tad short, but an overall solid experience. A nice little send off to the Winters saga. Although, I do wish that they could've showed Mia more often. I feel like Capcom just rather unfairly axed her out because she probably wasn't very popular with the fans. Hiding Ethan’s face was so weird, and it also reminded me how RE8 was obscuring Miranda’s face throughout the game. It’s hidden in pictures and behind the mask at the meeting. It seemed so obviously important that I was expecting something, for her to be Mia in some way, or look like Mia, or to turn out to be some returning character. All her appearances in the game, first as a goddess, than at a meeting, then killing off villagers (or lycans? I don’t remember) in the background, then Crone reveal - seemed to be leading to something? Of some great importance, a big reveal. But in the end it’s just “oh yeah she stole Rose to recreate her daughter whatever”, like, we already new this?? Almost from the beginning?? I get that there’s an umbrella connection reveal, and learning about her background at the end was kinda cool, but disappointing.
Honestly, though RE8 is a really cool game, a lot of it seemed disappointing, not in the “this is shit” way, but rather “it could have been so interesting and amazing but went nowhere” way. I would have really loved for there to be more about the village and their religion, for the lords to be more present throughout the game and to struggle for power, for Miranda to be a woman who convinced herself she’s a goddess. How cool would it have been to see each lord playing their own game, to witness their manipulations and squabbles? To have Monroe be Miranda’s snitch maybe? Ah well, great game, but also some great opportunities wasted.

It answers the question "Why didn't he tell Ethan?" with, "Because Chris is a bitter asshole who wasn't willing to put any trust in Ethan with his plan." He'd rather treat him like an asset and stuff him in a bag to keep him out of the way. And while it does come off pretty weak narratively, it definitely tracks with how Chris was portrayed in 6. In 5 he had lost Jill (for a while), in 6 he lost his squad and Piers. He probably thought he was doing Ethan a favor by sticking him in some blacksite in the dark.

Who complains about a horror game being too scary? It is a horror game. There is no such thing as "too scary". Now, for "too disgusting", sure you can make an argument for relying too much on gore, but gore has always been a key feature of the franchise. I love how House Beneviento was like, "yeah, corporate forced us to listen to the whiny babies who complain about horror being horror, but we're gonna throw this part in to just to tell them 'f*ck you'".
Capcom listens to it because this is a huge franchise, and the most scary games out there have less broad appeal, which is why most of the scarier games are indie (Amnesia, Outlast, Mortuary Assistant, etc.), with the exception being P.T. and Alien: Isolation (which Sega then complained about not selling as much as the more action-oriented Aliens games).

Shadows of Rose was pretty good and had some intense moments, third person was okay but you can definitely tell the campaign was meant for first person with how tight the map layouts are, and the new Mercenaries characters are a ton to play as due to them being so OP.
I felt it would have been extra cool if they added Miranda in there as a playable character but it ain't that big of a deal.

My favourite part of Shadows of Rose was when 'Michael' tells Rose to leave before she goes too deep, she refuses and he says "Stubborn..." I half expected him to add "just like your dad", because that's the implication isn't it? She gets that from him and he's noticing himself in her. Just like how nothing could convince him to move on from Mia in the 3 years she disappeared for, how he wasn't just going to leave the Baker estate despite how fucked up everything was, or how nothing was going to stop him from getting his daughter back, Rose wasn't going to leave until she got what she came for. I know a lot of people didn't like Ethan, but he's by some margin my favourite RE character.

8:32 Yep, that got me as well. Now I hate dollhouses. Also, was anyone else expecting to be chased by a giant stuffed monkey?
25:55 THANK YOU!!! Someone finally made that edit!
As for my thoughts on the WInters' Expansion? I quite enjoyed it. I agree that it's not as good as 7's DLC but it's still worth a look in my book. I understand that they didn't want to reveal too much of the overall story considering that it is DLC and not everyone will check it out, but I like what they do explore, namely Rose overcoming her inner turmoil regarding her powers and trying to learn about the father she never knew. And yeah, the ending got me teary-eyed.
Now for the base game of Village. I understand that the focus of 7 would win some people over, but ultimately I think that, while 7 provides the better horror experience, Village surpasses it in terms of gameplay. Some might say that the different scenarios leads to it feeling scattershot, but to me it feels going to a horror attraction. You get a different kind of experience for each area to keep things fresh. And for when things do go over-the-top, I still find it enjoyable. To me, Heisenberg's boss fight is Village's Robot Salazar Statue. It's so stupid you can't help but love it. And Chris' section is just pure catharsis after spending a majority of the game managing your resources to deal with them. The 3rd person mode added in was also a nice addition since it helps with viewing enemies more.
Mercenaries mode is definitely more fun now with the extra characters. Still not as good as 4 or 5's but it's certainly a lot more more fun now. Also, gotta disagree with you on Heisenberg. Iron Dilf is my go to guy in Mercenaries followed by Tall Vampire Milf. Whacking enemies with the hammer and pelting them with scrap and buzz saws is just so much fun. Although seeing Heisenberg in action like this really makes me wish we had some kind of encounter with his human form in the base game.
Now for REmake 4. I have faith that it will be a good time, though I am expecting some things to be changed or cut. But if the total package is even half as good as REmake 2, then I'll excuse it. I do like what I've seen so far but as always I'll keep my expectations in check.
Another excellent video Boulder Punch! And once again, love that "Rules of Nature" edit.

Resident Evil was my first favorite gaming franchise, and while it has since been overtaken, it still remains incredibly close to my heart and some of the entries still remain some of my favorite games of all time
I have absolutely loved every single RE engine Resident Evil title
When it comes down to just comparing seven or eight though, that one's tough for me
I think seven is a more tightly focused game, it is a far better horror game, and it feels much more like classic Resident Evil. In fact there has been no game that so closely mimicked the atmosphere of the original Resident Evil other than the remake of the original Resident Evil
But I can't help but find village to just be more fun to play overall
Seven is way scarier, if anything it's almost too scary. That feeling of constant tension makes it hard to just jump in and replay it
Where is village starts out creepy and spooky with Castle Dimitriscu. But it's also very enticing to explore and you always want to push just one more foot forward. It then blindsides you by being downright terrifying in-house meneviento but that segment only lasts so long before it really opens up into an action game.
And I found there to be zero parts that really bored me from beginning to finish except for maybe the last segment in Heisenberg's factory which starts to drag on a bit too long
Seven however I feel like starts to drag ass when you're in Lucas's segment and then the area on the boat definitely overstays it's welcome as well.
Seven has far more variety and content to choose from in its dlc, however I feel like most of it isn't really all that focused and the only one I really liked was end of Zoe and maybe playing the wave mode for a couple of rounds
Mercenaries mode in village isn't all that great but the addition of some new characters helps make it more enticing, and I feel like shadows of rose is a more tightly focused story expansion overall
So if you ask me to pick between 7:00 and 8:00, for me it's not even close to a difficult choice I'm going with village. I just have way more fun playing it
But again, I haven't actually been disappointed by any of the new Resident evils, even the remake of three.

@@upbeatjohndoe8044 I haven't gotten to play more than maybe 2 hours of RE4 tops. My life is so damn busy right now that I probably could have just waited until this was on sale and things were a little calmer for me
But this is my favorite game franchise so these are always day one purchases for me
However what I have played so far has been a lot of fun. Realistically just updating the control scheme for this game has done a lot more to reinvigorate playing through it again than I had initially thought
I was among the camp when this was announced who thought Resident Evil 4 ultimately didn't need a remake. Whether it was one of my favorites or not is immaterial I thought overall that the game holds up pretty well. The controls are definitely a bit stiff and awkward but once you kind of adapt to it and get used to it the game is perfectly serviceable
But this just feels so damn good to play. I went with the PS5 version and combat feels so much weightier with the haptic feedback on the PS5 controller. It's not the best utilization of it that I've seen but it definitely adds a little bit more than just a standard rumble.
I'm excited to crack into it some more this weekend

I liked it. I liked it a lot.
The Castle Dimitrescu or whatever her name was asset reuse was a little uninspired…not because it was an asset reuse, but just because it felt like there could’ve been a couple more puzzles. I steamrolled it and thought it was pretty weak with the generic enemies, two easy puzzles, and generic macguffin hunt. I do absolutely love the reduced loadout, though. The zombies are spongey as hell and only having a pistol makes fighting them feel way more intense. I just wish they had been more visually engaging. The boss fight was lame, since you can stun lock him and take his ass to pound town and if you don’t stun lock him, he’s a tedious slog of running .003mph to try to put some distance so you can turn and shoot his Glowing Weakpoint™️ before realizing you don’t actually run faster than him and get absolutely clobbered.
All complaints go by the wayside for the next part. The reuse of the doll house was inspired. I freaking loved the mannequins. It was such a simple gimmick, but the noise and their movement was so unsettling, I had my back turned to keep them from eating me, so when I entered a new room and a new one showed up, I had to figure out how to line it up so that I wouldn’t have a split group. That was a lot of fun and really creepy. The Obligatory Stealth Section™️ was similarly well done with an abundance of creepy dolls and a giant freaky mannequin joining towards the end. Being tiny really helped. Rose getting to see her dad’s memories was sweet and I almost teared up a little bit despite not really caring, so bravo for that.
The dlc, somehow, completely bafflingly, in its 2 hours and 47 minute runtime still manages to go to a lab with nonsensical lore scattered about. I was actually impressed, I figured that lab at the beginning that had the fungus was the Resident Evil Science Lab™️ but I was wrong. It was a genius red herring as I thought there was no way they could confuse me anymore than a full release Resident Evil Science Lab™️. So yeah…bravo there. The final boss fight was a lot of fun with the super powers and it had been a year and a half since I played village, so it didn’t feel like a recycled boss to me. The ending sucked, they should’ve showed his face, he’s a generic white guy…it’s not exactly a plot twist. It seems weird that we didn’t get anything from Chris and Mia who conveniently walked out of Rose’s life cause they just didn’t feel like appearing in this week’s episode of Dragon Ball Z, but it is what it is.
My biggest question is this: if Rose was tricked by a vision of K that was never there, how did she even get into the science lab in the beginning? Were they researching the evil bio weapon in a high school or something? Seems like she definitely would’ve realized K wasn’t actually there when they got to a door and he didn’t have a key…but it is what it is.
My final verdict is that this is the truest distillation of a new Resident Evil game you could ever get for $20. It has everything you could ever ask for..an area with backtracking for you to collect 3 of an item before moving forward, A creepy second location with tight corridors, and an Evil Science Lab where you realize that whoever writes these games has a vendetta against scientists for murdering their parents or their dog or something and has sworn off logic for the rest of their lives. This dlc was just missing a regular dude taking a serum that makes him grow ten thousand giant glowing eyeballs, but the first boss fight did had a giant glowing bug or flower or something as a weakpoint, and I do think that should satisfy longtime fans of the series. Similarly, the dialogue still sounds like the writer was locked in a basement somewhere for their entire lives and only heard humans interacting when the host had parties where everyone was drunk upstairs…so it’s pretty loyal to Resident Evil
Overall, I give this expansion an 8/10. The doll house really saved this expansion in the same way it saved the base game. It’s amazing that in a series dedicated to having the players speedrun the games, the devs finally got a chance to speedrun the development

Great essay. However, regarding Mia, I don't think she "conveniently walked out" of Rose's life. It's very likely that she was charged and arrested for working with the connections and is imprisoned at the Hound Wolf Squad's base (or a regular prison) at that point in the timeline. This is why I'm looking forward to RE9 as opposed to another remake. I REALLY want to see where the war with the BSAA goes. I hope it's not handled the same way Umbrella was where they were killed off screen in between CV and 4.

Village is the marriage of RE and DMC, yes I know that 4 is what resulted in DMC to begin with, and a lot of people say that Village is the spiritual sequel to 4 (Which they're right) but I'd say that Village does the DMC schtick better than 4.
It narrows down on classic horror elements like Universal Studios Monsters movies, and with the DLC it's definitely Alice's adventures in Wonderland.
Heck I always felt like the beautiful opening sequence to that game is paying tribute to all of the Tim Burton stop motion animation films like Corpse Bride, and of course Studio Laika with Coraline.
I think if someone isn't really familiar with horror classics they wouldn't be able to enjoy 7 and 8 to the same extent as those who enjoy the genre...
They're actually less CoD, and more... Raimi and Burton lol 😂

Those people who complained that RE7 was too scary should of been ignored by capcom. ITS A FREAKIN HORROR GAME OF COURSE ITS GONNA BE SCARY WTF!!!!!!
IF YOU DONT WANT TO BE SCARED THEN DONT PLAY HORROR GAMES!!!!
RE8 could have been so much better if it just stuck to horror like RE7 but no capcom just had to listen to those people. Honestly it sounds like they weren't even fans of the franchise to begin with if they complained that a (mostly) horror franchise was scary. Watch, RE9 is gonna be even more action packed just to please more people and we're gonna end up with another RE6. Let's hope we don't.....

They had Chris dlc planned? Dang, I thought the final stretch of the game was already the surprise on launch available Chris free dlc. I am honestly fine with it being scrapped at this point.
The way the series has been going after 4, I see it in two ways they should proceed. Either embrace it, stream line the main narrative RE is the Chris and pals show now, make him the main character and his striffe against umbrella and its successors on the bioweapons black market throne. So next main games, he is the mainstory playable character and first pov. Overly buff Lara Croft, I welcome thee. But also, at the same time, make it so the dlc of each game is essentially an old style PC expansion pack, basically long new games narrative tied to the original (in parallel and or after the main story) which each focus on different games. I know, sounding very reminiscing of 6, but just because the execution of that one wasn't for everyone's taste, doesn't mean the ideas were all bad inherently. Alternatively, embrace the rotating cast style as it seemed to be going to be moving forward with 1 and 2, and move series veterans to be the focus of the dlcs, Chris included.
Either way, works for me. What it imo shouldn't be is "7: oh you thought we were gaining a new protagonist? no, playable character but actually side character of our boy redfield's offscreen saga. 8: lol we did it again and you fell for it again, and not this time we are going to show how you were playing Piers 2.0 all along (you still die to save Chris and the world all the same though). And we even threathen to make a Chris centric extra content to rub salt on that wound just to make sure you get how tricked you were". I love Chris, have loved him since 1 for whatever reason (to the point I liked to play hard mode just because it was, well, to play as him - it is probably all the green, just like Luigi's). But this Chris centrism and fan servicing without committing to the bit can't be good.

Then of course there's the whole change of heart she has at the end of the dlc regarding her powers. But that's definitely just an assumption. I've followed RE but was never a PS user. Always a PC gamer. As a result it never had the impact on my young life it has had on many others. But I feel like the RE series has lost a bit of direction and is a bit of a genre chameleon that doesn't know where it wants to go.
Over it's history It has jumped from schlocky horror-house/ zombie B movie to a bit of teen slasher in RE3 mixed with zombies... then a bit of a detective thriller in RE 4 with more action emphasis. It turned into an all out action game in RE 5 and embraced it in on steroids in RE 6. RE 7 returned to survival horror but with an emphasis on gore/disgust porn visuals using tropes seen in Hostel and Saw which had obviously been popular and then drifted out of public awareness a few years prior. RE8 looks more to be a ghost story mixed with Vampire/Werewolf action movies like Underworld... and this DLC feels like Horror Harry Potter... it has a guide writing to you (albeit not in a book instead on the walls) and ... dementors... while being a chosen-one child with magic powers. Im not insulting it, it has a huge following and is obviously very popular but does anyone else get the impression that it wears inspiration on its sleeve? Is it some form of meta-joke by the creators? Like a 'wink wink nudge nudge' form of story telling? Or do we all think it's coincidence as a result of a super saturated industry where all original ideas are used up and have been done?

I really love Village, but this DLC feels a little lazy to me. Just... so many re-used assets and bosses and way too short. The mannequins were some of the scariest gameplay in recent memory tho, so it was worth it I guess. But still disappointing, man.
