Loved this...I'm sure this amazing story of our tiny island who stood up high on the biggest mountain of rugby league story will be a movie one day...I never watched rugby league till tonga showed their fighting spirit in this world cup..I live in Sydney Australia..and decided to be amongst our people to support the boys..when I got to the semi final stadium..I was speechless..we fought till the end..we stood tall..sang our hearts out..even though we lost..we partied like we won the world cup..proud to be a part of this..proud to be tongan..proud to be me..one love..one tonga..mate ma'a tonga...
This is probably the most exciting era in the history of Rugby League. As a transplanted Sand Groper who went to Qld in the late 70's and stayed for 23 years and became a die hard League supporter, I can't think of a time when the game looked in such good shape, especially on an international level. The color, the excitement and most of all, the skill and talent shown by teams most thought of as very second and third tier in the international scene, amounted to probably the best ever Rugby League World Cup ever. After Australia win the final ( yeah, they will ) it will be up to everyone involved in each and every level of the game, no matter how small, to keep this momentum going. There has to be the support to grow the game in the Pacific island nations and PNG even more to maintain this wellspring of wonderfully naturally talented young athletes, to ensure the further growth in Lebanon to the point where most of the national team come from there and, turning to the Old World, pick French Rugby League up by the scruff of the neck and give it a good shake. Our game needs the almost incomprehensible, spur of the moment innovation that French national teams used to show in years gone by. How the game is to be advanced in places like Ireland and Scotland and Wales is probably something that should be looked at more by those with more local knowledge, given that all of these places have well entrenched Rugby Union cultures in place. On a global level, advancing the game even more into the so called minnow nations is paramount and especially so in the case of the Pacific island nations. Can you imagine a future World Cup comp with teams from Samoa, American Samoa or maybe even Hawaii? I truly believe that now is a the time for our game to move in directions never thought of before. Now is the time when we all should begin to Dream Big.
