Hey Prof. This is kit from Danny Wilson here. Someone shared this link with me via FB this morning and I've only just managed to find the time to watch it now. I'm commenting here IMMEDIATELY just to both thank you and to congratulate you on what , to my mind, is not only probably the best interview I've ever seen anyone do with my brother Gary, but also the most deeply insightful, respectful and down right soulful communication of your own perspective on this particular song and what it means to you. Thank you so much. You have a very special gift. Wishing you all of the very best for everything you do in life my friend. Thanks again, kit.
So strange to think of this as a hidden gem, this is my and my husband's song. We met in 88, we both say later, it was the thunderbolt. We were with other people, great people. We worked together for 2 years, becoming friends, sparring. I was about to leave the job. We were away for a night on a business trip. We stayed up later and later, talking and yes, getting drunk. He told me that he had fallen in love with me two years before but thought I didn't want him. I said the same. We went back to those lovely people and ended those relationships. We were married six weeks later and still are 34 years later. When he proposed, he kept singing " Blessed is the millionaire who shares your wedding day. Mary's Prayer, my favourite song that still m&kes me weep. So thank you!

Easily one of the best songs written.. a perfect song actually.. one of my top 5 sings ever.. beautifully written and performed.. I could hear it everyday and never tire of it
Professor I absolutely love the way you make the artist re-live the emotions of the song, you can literally see them go back in time and be themselves again when they wrote it. Never ceases to amaze me how they pick up on that, as if they have never been asked genuine questions before by someone who knows the music as well as they do. You are the real deal, a real shining light in today’s world. Thank you.
WELL PUT!! I thought I was the only one who could see the singer/songwriters eyes just… glaze over as they mentally go back in time!! Thank you @Paul Sullivan for pointing it out to everyone…
It's amazing how few interviewers talk about the song writing process, what the song means to those who author the lyrics. I love how Gary Clark showed his appreciation for these types of questions. Thanks, Prof, this was excellent!
I was just a little girl when this song came out. It touched me so and stayed with me until I rediscovered it as an adult. I can't believe how underrated this song is! One of the most beautiful songs, lyrically and so soulful!
This is truly one of the amazing musical gems of 1987, and the lyrics are timeless. Really a beautiful song from an amazing songwriter. The song is pure musical genius. Thanks for covering this one, Adam, and the interview was spectacular!
Mary's Prayer is an incredible song and one of the best hidden gems of the 80s. It brings be back to my teenage days in the 80s. Definitely a song worthy of a 30 minute breakdown.

Thank you for this precious nugget, gentleman !!! My brother and I, on a recent road trip to take care of a bit of difficult, sentimental family business - made a brief stop for a cup of coffee - as we circled about the coffee bar "Mary's Prayer" lit into the room - I hadn't heard it in years - he and I are both college grads of the eighties - and our chatter dropped as did that in the room - my mind breezed though my romantic entanglements of that decade and their so very complex and evocative emotions - those next few moments were filled with ethereal bliss - the impact of which, days later, still ruminates within my heart with fond remembrances and haunting what ifs - that's the power of this song. It's simply magical !
It is a pleasure to see two intellectual equals discuss the deeper meaning, influences, and impacts that this song has had. Gary obviously respected and appreciated your preparation for this interview and your knowledge of the song's background and genesis. That, in turn, made him comfortable with opening up and perhaps going a bit more in depth and being a bit more open than he normally would be with an interviewer. The result was an absolutely fantastic interview. Well done.
Loved this song from the first time I heard it on VH1 in 1987. Even my dad, who was beyond loving anything much pop music wise at that time in his life, liked the song also. Never fell in the category of hidden gem it was always a gem and is in the top 10 of my all time favorite songs.
Gary Clarke is a stunning writer, his work with Danny Wilson amazing, how work on Sing Street the movie, Wow, an awesome Musical secret that created work that hooked you in and to this day can open a door to a time and memory from my youth... so awesome. those albums deserve a lot more airplay. Respect
Stumbled across this interview and just amazing. I was a huge fan of Danny Wilson and Mary's Prayer is a song that has been with me for over 35 years. It haunted me for many years but as I grew older I began to realize that love is not singular and can exist in many forms. The lyrics tell you it's ok to let go and remember that love may elude but it does not die. There should be no regrets just memory.
Wow, all these years later, I find out today that Danny Wilson wasn't the frontman but the name of the band itself! Gary Clark was the frontman/singer/songwriter of Mary's Prayer. Terrific!
This song brings tears to my eyes. Not in a bad way but, reminds me of my childhood summers in the 80's drinking sun tea my mom made and playing with my friends. Miss those days and that era so much. Ty P.O.R.
Oh my gosh!! SUN🌞Tea!! Yes! In a huge glass tub with a bunch of Lipton tea bags, sit it out front for a few hours in Nevada summer, mmmm so delicious & wonderful after playing around in the sprinklers 😆..... God bless you for sharing your thoughts today🍃🌺
One of my absolute favorite songs from the 80s. Every time I hear this song it takes me immediately back to summer of 1987- I had just finished my junior year in HS & getting ready for my senior year. Wonderful time and wonderful song. It will forever take me to that time. Thank you prof for giving this song the attention & love it deserves. Should have been a top 5 hit here in the U.S.
Hope you catch this comment, Adam. This is an incredible interview. Not only your usual information beyond average, but you took him back and helped him go back to all the feelings of why he wrote an he felt so good that you understood that. Human beings connected and feelings of joy. It doesn't get any better than that. You were made to do this. Thank you ❤
I’m out on the road with my band The Kentucky HeadHunters today, I heard “Mary’s Prayed” in the hotel lobby earlier. I hadn’t heard it in years, the chorus took me back to the 80’s, immediately hooked me! What a great song, this is a great post. So cool reconnecting with this 80’s gem today. Greg Martin
This song has always moved me. It's kind of perfect. The chords, the vocal melody and the lyrics just gel so well. I get teary whenever I hear it, have done since I bought the 7 inch 34 years ago and even hearing these two talk about it has the same effect! I enjoy this channel, but even within that this interview is something special.
I can hear this song in so many ways and in so many characters as I've gotten older. Especially the passing of time you cannot get back. Thinking about a father singing it for his lost or estranged daughter just guts me.
Thank you for this professor! When I saw the title of the video I knew it was about Mary's Prayer! It is undoubtedly the most heartbreaking and best written song ever. Even more so than Somebody's Baby. I don't recall hearing it on radio here in Canada back then, but I hear it in department stores. It's one of those songs that we hear, and we don't know what it is, but we feel like we've known it all our lives. As for newly named music genres, I fall on the leave it alone side. Yacht rock? Hair bands? Those were not terms that would have flown back then. If you like a style of music, just admit it, don't invent a condescending name for it. Cheers pal!
I can never listen to the song without wanting to break down and cry because it reminds me of a love that I have lost and I can never stop thinking of her. But, I also love to watch the video because of the brief glimpse of Tatiana, the blonde woman-SHE IS BEAUTIFUL!!!
This is the one I've been waiting for. Gary Clark is one of my favourite singers of all time. Meet Danny Wilson and Bebop Moptop are two of my favourite albums ever and I still play them all the time. Thank you.
Really great interview with one of my favourite singer songwriters. Was lovely how Gary kept complimenting Adam on his understanding of the sing lyrics and you could tell he really enjoyed talking about the song with someone who fully understands it.
I'm struggling to find the words to describe the depths of emotions I'm feeling at this very moment, hearing this for 'first time' in over three decades. Funnily enough, I've never associated this song with anyone in particular, yet it evokes feelings of despair, loss and vulnerability... and I cry, without reservation and singing like no one's listening. This song makes me FEEL things I haven't felt in ages... Thank you from the bottom of my heart... thank you.
This has always been one of my favorite songs. The meaning has changed for me through different stages of my life and each time I hear it it still draws me in like the first time I heard this amazing piece of music! Thanks for doing an in-depth interview on it
One of your best entries, Professor! Thank you for talking to the author of one of my all-time favorite songs. And you didn't even get into talking about Sing Street! Maybe a Part 2?
Whenever I here this song I'm reminded of a love I left and her pain from my leaving. I'm reminded of the hurt I felt from that decision. The song brings back memories of what was and is no more. Despite all the painful memories evokesd, I listen to the song to be reminded of the love someone had for me once. A very powerful piece of music.
I've had "Meet Danny Wilson" on cassette, CD, and now vinyl. The cassette was buried among my heavy metal selections in the late 80s and I never understood why I loved that album so much. A combination of songwriting and melody that I still find joyous and appealing to this day. I was so happy when I found "Be Bop Mop Top" in the mid 90s that I also picked it up on cassette and now on vinyl. Mary's Prayer's video was the door that led me to this band. THANK YOU for this most AWESOME interview with Gary Clark. Nice to know that I'm not the only one who loves this band and this song.
This, THIS is my favorite 80's song! Such poignant lyrics. I have been enthralled with this song from the first time I heard it. Also, Gary Clark seems like a genuinely nice man. Thank you for this song, Mr. Clark!
Beyond belief spectacular song and meaning... different for so many .... to me about loss and regret , and an admonition not to behave that way when you " find somebody to keep"
I absolutely adore this song. It was a big hit at the time but it's right to consider it a hidden gem. It shouldn't be but it is. Thanks for covering and highlighting this song.
Great interview, you asked him shit I would have asked! Love love LOVE this song! I also adore that part near the end when he says ‘Save me’ too! I loved Gary’s voice when I first heard it back in ‘87…and the lyrics! Such a wonderful song. Ahhhh…I miss the 80’s!! I
OH MY GOSH..!! Again..! This song and album are some of my all-time favorites. I remember every song in order, every word. FANTASTIC album. No one ever talks about this underappreciated album. I first had the tape, and soon had to get the CD. Every song is full of melody and emotion. When this came out I was infatuated with Sinatra in my senior year while my buddies' were listening to Metallica (ha). When I found out the origin of their name, it solidified my awe of this phenomenal LP. I still listen to it front to back often.
The longevity of Mary's Prayer speaks far more than chart positions. I've played this in several bands around the pub/club circuit, and it always went down well with any audience from young to old. In the unlikely event I ever drag my knackered old backside back out there again, it will be one of the first numbers I write down on the set list. I enjoy playing it as much now as I did 30 something years ago.
One of the best songs of the era, hands down. Brilliant album as well, I was a teenager when I bought it and at the time I was disappointed that not every song had the same "sound" as Mary's Prayer, but over the years as my tastes have broadened I came to realize just how brilliant "Meet Danny Wilson" is as a whole. Wonderful interview, really insightful!
I didn't find this song until the 1990s, but I can't forget it now. It speaks to too many relationships I ruined and regret. Now do the other most heart-wrenching song of the 80's Marrilion's "Kayleigh"" !
This was most definitely one of my top 5 favorite songs of the '80's. Still love it. This interview was amazing in how Adam got the writer to delve deeper into the breakdown of the song and the emotions behind it, than this writer ever has. This is my favorite YouTune channel.
Definitely one of my favorite songs from 87. I remember because I lost my girlfriend Meri in high school and this hit hard. Still listen today. Real gem
i have to say, as a catholic woman, those lyrics are so masterfully written. so many references to the catholic faith, but yet so open to interpretation. and it really shows how many catholic women - who were raised praying to and revering mother mary - feel about romance, marriage, motherhood, and love in general. we strive to live up to her example and to be loving, kind, loyal, faithful, giving and compassionate enough to be sung about in such a way. to love so abundantly, that others view our presence as a blessing, and see our absence as some kind of loss.
Stumbled onto this song the other night watching RUclips music videos and remembered how much I loved it back in the day. Can't pin it down but there is definitely something about it that moves me emotionally. Just wonderful!!!! Have been walking around the last few days with it stuck in my head...
Gary Clark has an incredible voice. Although I can appreciate interpretations of many songs, in my book, there are no renditions that can touch the original. The vocals and delivery, add such a depth, which are difficult to emulate. Thank you Professor! (From a fellow 80s kid listening to Casey Kasem EVERY weekend.)
This song was a breath of fresh air. It stood out from all that was going on in the 80s. It wasn't until later that I listened to the lyrics closely. It was a few years before I got it. Really appreciate you digging deep into the story and the song.
I remember this song. It's stuck around. I still hear it a lot on the radio and in malls, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, etc. The music was just so much better in the 80s.
Terrific interview. I always adored this song, still listen to it today, never ages, sounds fresh because it wasn't overplayed on the radio. It deserved a number one ranking. I interpret some of the lyrics slightly differently from those expressed in the interview. I don't see it as a sad song, it's romantic, spiritual and passionate. The music video is really cool too.
I remember hearing Mary’s Prayer on the radio and being astounded when it didn’t chart. I loved it the first time I heard it and was so chuffed when it eventually hit No 3.
I was going about my morning and the lyrics. " i used to be so careless, as if i couldn't care less" popped into my head and i had to come here and hear the song again. Great interview!
This is truly a classic song that achieves what makes tunes great. The lyrics intrigues you no matter how many time you listen to it. The music compliments the story line.
What a great interview. One the best that you've done. Mary's Prayer is one of my favorite songs ever. The vocals, lyrics and the hooks are brilliant. I still get the chills when I hear it. Listening to Gary and you talk about Mary's Prayer made my week. What a great guy Gary is. He's all class. I'm spending my morning catching up on the videos of the last week and this is the highlight among many highlights. Thanks again, Adam!
@@ProfessorofRock I'd be curious how many times you get this kind of comment, where they say "Best interview ever!" because of their great appreciation for said artist? It shows how important it is for humanity to have such diversity in art and music. Thank you for being the twenty first century version of Casey Kasem. You are keeping music alive! Peace my friend.
Great episode Professor! I love these great 80's songs that take me back to the great days of life before divorce and loosing loved ones, it was a happy time in my life before all the bad stuff. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! Thank you! For doing this interview. I had this song on a 45. I think at one point my sister yelled at me that if I played it again, she was going to break it. This song was so important to me because it made me realize that I had a different musical year than most people, my age at the time. I was able to open up to so much music and so many artists even in my teens. So, thank you as an interviewer and of course, thanks to the group, Danny Wilson.
I was so pleased to see that Gary Clark was a down-to-earth, modest and intelligent soul - so unlike the complacent, condescending and egotistical people in the music field today.
Always was one of my favorites from the 80's. It was years before I could make out the lyric "ten Hail Marys" even though I am a clergyman! The production really shines, each instrument stands out so clear as does his voice. Some trivia: I am 100% certain the video I saw on TV in the 80's was not the same as any of the videos available on RUclips. It didn't have all the animation, more shots of the band playing with the jerky 3 second cuts so common in music videos. In the old video Gary is wearing very baggy clothes (definite Boy George influence) and his brother is wearing the same hat as on the album cover while they perform. Would love to find that version.
....believe it or not, Crowded House's Don't Dream it's Over didn't break into the UK top 20...almost didn't even break the 30. Sometimes odd things happen.
Danny Wilson is one of my all time bands. His voice for me had a strong resemblance to that of Donald Fagen. The song Mary's Prayer has been with me since I first heard it. That smooth Pop sound is perfect for me. Mary's Prayer is timeless!
Thank you both for shedding light on one of my favourite songs of the 80s, maybe ever. I remember going to a family doo, wearing the nicest double breasted suit (Danny Wilson bass player style)I ve ever had,and dancing to this song. It was played several times that night. I d bought the single a few weeks before and played it to death. What a fabulous song. I will always love it, and I Can't Wait.👌
I loved this song back in the 80s. It's one of those songs where it's all yours, because no one else knows about it (or seemed to know about it). If it hit main stream success, I don't think I would have liked it so much.
My wife and I grew up on this song. Dated to this song. Got married with this song on the players (despite its' meaning, but, "Every Breath You Take" was on everyone's marriage playlist too lol). Danny Wilson is just an underrated fantastic record, and that song is just one of the best ever.... Thank you for bringing this to a new audience. Much deserved!
This song I understand being on a wedding list but Every Breath You Take? Sting himself said that song was about obsession. It’s basically a stalker anthem! But Mary Prayer is simply gorgeous and moving. This I get bc it’s like saying a vow.

I'd be honored if some fans of eclectic mid-80s classics would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of MARY'S PRAYER and LIFE IN A NORTHERN TOWN by the Dream Academy on my YT in tribute to the sound of the era. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Peace and stay safe in the '020s.
Well done.
Absolutely, Professor - one of-if not THE-most perfect pop songs EVER written...(and his/your hat is iconic)! 😉Hats Off to Gary Clark and the band! 🥰
Terrific!
Me too! I guess a quick Google check could have taken care of it, but I didn't think to check. I love this channel more every day🎶🎶
Me too!
What special, time-less song. The sentiment..the marriage of melody, performance and melancholy that cuts to the bone. "Mary's Prayer" is timeless.
Just a beautiful song with moving spiritual undertones. Clearly unique and memorable, and I never tire of listening to it...
This song brings tears to my eyes. Not in a bad way but, reminds me of my childhood summers in the 80's drinking sun tea my mom made and playing with my friends. Miss those days and that era so much. Ty P.O.R.
You are very welcome. That's why I'm here! Nostalgia.
@@mastercleanseNOTdiet You're welcome brother. Don't forget to thank the Professor for taking us down this road. He's awesome.
@@mastercleanseNOTdiet Lipton? Red Rose. “Only in Canada? Pity...”
@@iamnostalgic9567 he is pretty good, I just wasn't into 2bi MTV bands. And 35 years later, they don't make me pop a chubbi.
I can totally understand..This song holds so many great memories...love from Donegal in Eire!
Greg Martin
High praise indeed. So cool that you chimed in on this. Rave on, Greg. You’re a monster player. Love your music.
This beautiful song has been a part of my playlist for 30+ years. Certainly love what you do Professor!
Love this song and the whole album. I've owned Meet Danny Wilson in every format its ever been released.
This took me way back! My mother used to play this a lot when I was a child. One of my favorite songs of all time!
YES! Also one of my favorite songs from the 80s/of all time. Danny Wilson so underrated.
Loved the song from the first time I heard Mary's prayer. It is still in my favorites folder.
This is the one I've been waiting for. Gary Clark is one of my favourite singers of all time. Meet Danny Wilson and Bebop Moptop are two of my favourite albums ever and I still play them all the time.
Thank you.
A band I always wanted to see,but they split up before I had the chance. In my opinion a brilliant band and two memorable albums.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart... thank you.
i love this song! thanks for covering it!
This has always been one of my favorite songs. The meaning has changed for me through different stages of my life and each time I hear it it still draws me in like the first time I heard this amazing piece of music! Thanks for doing an in-depth interview on it
I loved Mary's prayer from the first time I heard it. Such a feel good song. Great beat, voice and lyrics. perfect for the dance floor
It was me
I've had "Meet Danny Wilson" on cassette, CD, and now vinyl.
Clark!
Hands to Heaven by Breathe or My Foolish Heart by Johnny hates jazz are just as good if not better!! Dig it!!
Same Here… 🤔
Beyond belief spectacular song and meaning... different for so many .... to me about loss and regret , and an admonition not to behave that way when you " find somebody to keep"
I absolutely adore this song. It was a big hit at the time but it's right to consider it a hidden gem. It shouldn't be but it is.
Thanks for covering and highlighting this song.
You are very welcome. One of my favorites ever. Thanks for watching.
Such a beautiful song.....I have always loved this song.... everything about it.
I am very happy this song was presented!
Wow! Great, passionate comment! Thank you. You get it my friend!
One of the greatest songs ever! Fab interview!
I am sorry to say that I forgot how much I loved this song back in the 80's, thank you for the reminder it's going into my rotation. :)
Me, too, Amy.
Real gem
The number of times he tells The Professor he's good at this. Priceless.
Incredible interview!!! And absolutely one of my favorites, use to make me cry lol.
i have to say, as a catholic woman, those lyrics are so masterfully written. so many references to the catholic faith, but yet so open to interpretation. and it really shows how many catholic women - who were raised praying to and revering mother mary - feel about romance, marriage, motherhood, and love in general. we strive to live up to her example and to be loving, kind, loyal, faithful, giving and compassionate enough to be sung about in such a way. to love so abundantly, that others view our presence as a blessing, and see our absence as some kind of loss.
His voice is probably the smoothest, sweetest male singing voice, I have ever heard.
An absolute stone cold masterpiece album. Devastating.
Respectfully.
I have loved that song for all these decades but never knew the story of it. Thank you.
Let’s make it a HIT Song here in 2022! It is an awesome tune. 10 out of 10 for the vocals and the band. The lyrics just flow effortlessly!!! Cheers.
I love everything about this song, but the piano arrangement is the best thing I've heard.
Since my name is Mary, this song has always had a special spot in my heart ❤️
Love, love, love, Gary Clarke and Danny Wilson band!
Agree. Thanks for watching
I remember hearing Mary’s Prayer on the radio and being astounded when it didn’t chart. I loved it the first time I heard it and was so chuffed when it eventually hit No 3.
SADE's music is soooo good. I saw her in the 80's and was blown away. Such a great talent.
I was going about my morning and the lyrics. " i used to be so careless, as if i couldn't care less" popped into my head and i had to come here and hear the song again. Great interview!
Adam! Brilliant interview about one of the greatest songs that brings back a ton of memories! Thanks and keep up the great work!
This is truly a classic song that achieves what makes tunes great. The lyrics intrigues you no matter how many time you listen to it. The music compliments the story line.
I have always loved this song! Thanks for covering it, Prof!
Fantastic song. Like a breath of fresh air. His Scottish accent is so distinct in the song and adds to the whole angst of the lyrics.
You are very welcome my friend. One of my favorite interviews as well.
@@ProfessorofRock thanks my friend.
The lyrics are like a stab in the heart..I got so many regrets..relationships are like glass, easily broken
Such a sadly overlooked and underrated band. Both albums they released were great. Would love to hear something new from Gary, Ged and Kit!
Love this song. Definitely doesn’t get the attention it deserves from the 80’s. Brilliant band from my home city Dundee, Scotland too
This song really is a hidden gem. Such a great tune. It should've gone higher on the American pop charts than #23.
I know! It should've been at least top 5. Thanks for watching.
....believe it or not, Crowded House's Don't Dream it's Over didn't break into the UK top 20...almost didn't even break the 30. Sometimes odd things happen.
It really does not matter. Who cares?
@@eightiesmusic1984 You don't, some do. Bore off.
One of my all-time favorite songs!! Thank you for this amazing interview!!
Great interview. It reminds me of Bread’s song Diary. Sometimes you just have to let go.
This was one of my Favorite songs ever also!
Danny Wilson is one of my all time bands. His voice for me had a strong resemblance to that of Donald Fagen. The song Mary's Prayer has been with me since I first heard it. That smooth Pop sound is perfect for me. Mary's Prayer is timeless!
The singer is Gary Clark.
Great interview & great memory from the halcyon days of the '80s.
Great song choice Adam! One of the best of my Senior Year in High School! Right up there with Under The Milky Way!
Me too class of '87 baby..!!
It's so incredible. Magical really. Thanks for commenting.
Thank you both for shedding light on
one of my favourite songs of the 80s, maybe ever.
Exactly!
This was a great song. Appreciate it whole lot more after this interview.
I love this song. Thank you for this interview, I loved it.
