Hello, the "drop shadow" around the subject is a ring flash. You can see a faint reflection of it exactly in the center of the glass sphere.

Thanks for the question, those are some unique photos! The image is a composite of several different photos. I’m thinking the black latex-looking layers with reflected light could be something like black paint splashing. Maybe he had a bucket of black paint, set up lights, and took photos of something splashing into the paint. Then photoshopped it onto the model to make it look like it was part of them.
