In this video, I cover the benefits of adopting a rescue rabbit over getting a bunny from a pet shop or breeder. I also talk about some of the reasons why some people think they "can't" rescue a bunny and why these reasons aren't necessarily valid. 0:00 Intro 0:47 Choose the personality you want 1:11 Save A LOT of money 2:10 Know what you're getting 2:46 Bonded pairs 3:16 Ongoing support 4:00 Returns/trial periods 4:58 Reasons why people think they can't rescue
This is very true! When I adopted Thurberi, not only was he only $40 (not counting the supplies I had to buy for him) I also got to meet and greet him first rather than just take him home blindly. Plus his foster mom gave me all his toys and even some hay and litter he was using, which helped on costs. When he ended up being scared of my cat and kept escaping his ex-pen (he cleared not only the pen, but my entire couch! Rabbits are crazy athletic!) the shelter hooked me up with their animal behaviorist to help me sort it out and make him happier, rather than having to give him up. Not only that, the foster was willing to babysit him for me while I prepared a better space where he could have more privacy. (He has his own little room now with a very tall baby gate and is no longer scared of the cat for it.) I'm not really able to financially donate to that shelter as of now, but one thing I did to hopefully help them out is I set my Amazon Smile account to make a donation to them every time I purchase something. So hopefully I am paying them back at least a little every time I buy Thurberi's supplies.
I’m trying to convince my mom to let me get a second one from a rescue! The rescue allows u to get a spayed/nurtured for $250-$300. It seems expensive but it comes with the adoption fee, the surgery, food and water bowls, pellets, an x-pen, hay, treats, toys
Regarding the last point about a lack of rabbit rescue in one’s area, a lot of animal shelters that aren’t rabbit-specific have them. The shelter near me has cats, dogs, and rabbits, too.
The Michigan Humane Society has four shelters that cover southeast Michigan. Bunnies are in the "small animals and exotics" category, along with Guiniea pigs, chickens, and the occasional hamster or rat.
Yeah, when I was first thinking about getting a bunny, I looked to see if there were any rabbit rescues near me. There weren’t, so I ended up going through just a regular shelter. I honestly didn’t have the best experience, especially looking back and knowing more about rabbits than I did at the time. Not that I’m complaining, I wouldn’t change a thing now. It just would’ve been nice to get a bunny from people who knew A little bit more about proper bunny care
It's still wonderful that you adopted your bunny from the shelter and I'm sure you're giving it all the love and care it deserves. I wish I hadn't gotten Turbo from a breeder but of course, I wouldn't change him for anything. We just take these experiences as lessons and do better next time 🙂
Sadly, most shelters are understaffed and what little staff there are go to the dogs and cats. Nobody really volunteers for bunnies, so they don't get the best treatment or exercise unless they're with a foster.
Just "fostered" a new little girl to bond with my bun. She is on a trial with us atm and starting to do bonding with her. In the uk to fully adopt a rabbit it is only 50 pounds and it includes all vet work ! from the experiences I have had so far I would defo recomed rescues :)
How about the Humane Society? Plum and Caye are both from the Michigan Humane Society (Washtenaw County and Rochester Hills centers, respectively) $60 for healthy, desexed bunnies. They’re good hearted people, although they have been known to go off the deep end in naming bunnies (right now you can adopt Bunyonce, Bunny Gaga, and Bunny Spears, along with another 8 or 10 with less silly names).
All of the shelters near me are about $50 for a single rabbit, and between $60-70 for a bonded pair. This covers all the spaying and neutering and all medical work and care.
I also wanted my bunnies from a rescue center but in India( specially at Kolkata) their is no rescue center so I had to buy my bunnies from a pet Market...🙃But I agree with you❤️💜🖤edit = I am you new subscriber ✅😅
i really wanted to get a bunny from a rescue but i tried and it kind of traumatized me a bit.... we tried adopting a female that they claimed to be spayed and we had to pay 400usd for the spay. she was the most hormonal rabbit ive ever seen, peeing everywhere and being smelly, the whole package. she was always nervous and making noises and we tried to bond her w our other bunny bambi but it never worked out. i honestly feel like they lied to us? they said that she wasnt nervous and said she was spayed. this was in japan.
Oh no that experience sounds awful, no wonder you're traumatised from it. That's such a shame because you were just trying to do the right thing. It doesn't sound anything like the experience I've had with rescue :(
@@BunsBestLife yeah. unfortunately :( i think its much better in eu us etc because of foster families etc but i dont think i can trust people here w bunnies...
I believe there's a few great rescue groups in Victoria like Rabbit runaway orphanage? You could try contacting the Rabbit sanctuary to ask about whether interstate adoptions are available for any of their bunnies?
are they desexed? if so, that's a very good price! we have shelters that charge between $30-$50 for bunnies but they're only vaccinated, nothing wrong with them though! Just trying to help people understand the cost of bunnies from dedicated rescue groups

I recently adopted a bonded bunny pair from the humane society! Im so happy with my decision! 💕 They are living their best, free-roaming, life!

That's amazing since they also include the basic set up needs! Such a great idea

I have two rescue rabbits which I bonded.I just want to say everything you have said on this video is exactly spot on.

Yayyy!! thank you for rescuing, hopefully they'll get along ❤
This video is so helpful thanks 😊

haha Bunmi was originally called Bunny Spears!
I’ve adopted all 4 of my buns 3 through the pets at home foundation and 1 through the RSPCA

If I ever get another companion for Apollo (which I probably will), I'll definitely be adopting. Probably from the RSPCA or The Rabbit Sanctuary.
This makes me so happy, thank you ❤❤❤
We adopted our bunny from a local rescue group and will only get from groups like them again :)

Hellooo! Yeah it doesn't seem bunny rescues are common in Asia? Sending love to your bunnies ❤🐰
@@BunsBestLife I don't know about whole Asia but in India it's difficult to find any bunny rescue center 😅...and Thank u for 💗💖
There's one in Kolkata itself.

We adopted our bunny from Kijiji. We saved him from a terrible situation.
