Still analyzing... damn In one sense it's very Girardian: the necklace is encapsulated within a security box within the department store, with the photographer taking a picture of the object as well, but also inserting themselves into the picture. Even prior to status, the necklace is emblematic of mimetic desire (both by the store and by the photographer as first and second parties, but by everyone else who sees either the necklace or the picture, the third parties - desiring it simply by nature of it being desired by others). Now, regarding status, the mechanism of mimetic desire inverted pins capital as the rightful scapegoat for why this thing even exists or is being sold/protected in the first place. To get Derrridian: the picture is hauntological as well - the object is haunted by the photographer's desire to own the object (manifested as the photographer's reflection in the case, as a "ghost"), but the photographer is haunted as well by the object's reflection of material status. It's a double bind, and one where no method of emancipation is readily apparent, and the amateur smartphone picture quality is a testament to our own condition - any of us could have taken this picture, and all of us understand (if not consciously) the problem of modern capital that this picture dictates. This picture is, in some sense, also a product of its type. The album came out in 2014, pre-Trump, but still recognizable by early 2020 standards. It's perhaps the last vestige of the pseudo-utopianism of Western neoliberalism before the veil got lifted, giving the picture an optimistic quality (if not a false one). It's a genius and iconic cover, frankly.
well i like it a lot, i actually went and downloaded all of bine's stuff! I would love to find more music like this, with that authentic vapor sound? idk too many artist playing games nowadays..
I know this was 3 years ago, but I'd look up vaportrap, vapor twitch, wave, or cloud rap, for similar stuff. blank body (bine's main music project), Suicideyear, and Subaeris will give you similar vibes. Edit: Also NxxxxxS, Gud, Yung Sherman, and Whitearmor.
