I stopped playing around about Khans of Tarkir block and only came back to the game a couple of months ago, really, really surprised to discover that GPs and PTQ's etc were things of the past. I have really fond memories of travelling to different GP's and getting a taste of top tier competitive tournaments and will absolutely be heading the ones that are in Europe next year.
@@LordErebusBloodmoon Lol in a nutshell, yes! The meta was just very 'samey' which doesnt seem to be the case anymore. Went to a GP in Birmingham just after the set released and it was all either Abzan mid-range, RDW or Jeskai Control.
I am sad that we, in Australia, are getting missed again. But maybe we will be thought of when the Pauper spotlight comes around. I bet Good Games would be a good sponsor for this event.

7:57 I honest to god thought that the "Magic spotlight series" was a new product or something, took me a little while before I realized it was a tournament
I think that they probably would've had a much better time with just calling it a GP again. Instead of trying to rebrand like they always do. Also cant wait for that Behind the Campus video!
For anyone who has never attended a GP, these events could be a nice thing. For those of us that have attended a GP before this is a new opportunity for us to make new friends and to go to a (hopefully) memorable event with newer people we know who have gotten into magic. GPs are some of my favorite MTG memories that I've ever had.
It's always been my dream to go to some sort of large scale magic event, and sadly I haven't been able to so far since they stopped doing GP's it seems like my only options have been magiccon, but that is almost always really expensive. Hopefully with the return of something like the Grand Prix I can finally go to one of these events and get some cards signed by my favourite artists!
As a newer player this makes me excited. I had heard about the Grand Prix events and the energy behind competitive Magic pre-2019 and it sounded awesome. I love the idea of working my way up and simply being part of a big event.
Prof, I would just like to say that we also have a thriving and vibrant community in South Africa and are equally sad we do not have access to events such as these! 😆
I know i'm going to make a bad question, but I just wanted to know your perspective on this. It's clear wotc Is pulling back from latam, probably because they aren't making enough Money to support a specific involvment in the region: so why do you think wotc (a company that aims at making Money) should make events inan area that realistically doesn't have enough players to justify that?
@@Automaconfuso not a bad question at all. The problem is, I'm a magic player, not a WotC stakeholder, so my focus is on competitive opportunities and healthy formats, not their bottom line. The owner of one of the LGS I go to is also a manager for a punk band and we were talking about how financially, its better for his CANADIAN punk band to tour the U.S. because there's more stops and more population. The further west you go in Canada the more sparse it becomes until you reach the like three big cities. It sucks that there isn't one in Toronto at least, but it does make sense to me logistically if they would be billing it as "Canada's Event". Our CommandFest coming up is even in a tiny venue compared to some of the ones in the U.S. We simply just don't have enough people to do one.

Enough so that I won't feel like I wasted time if I go and don't find anything interesting. And of course travel. I want there to be one in my area. Thankfully I live in a big enough area that it may be considered. But the travel thing is another big question and I do hope a lot of places get these events since travel can absolutely be the biggest barrier to some people's attendance.

As someone who can scarcely afford to travel all over the country, my one problem is that the scarcity of events means I just need to hope that one is held in my home city of Houston, TX. And I’m fortunate, since I have all of *five* chances for that to happen.
The big prize is great, BUT: 1.) it leads to collusion and sketchy deals under the table between players. 2.) most ppl are not economically able to attend these events that require travel, hotels, and admission costs, on top of the cost of your deck. 3.) edh is the biggest mtg format; most players aren’t sweaty and competitive mtg players. Most play casual kitchen table 1v1 or casual 4 player edh overall….i bet its less than 20% of mtg players that actually go to tournaments, even for the lgs events.
Point 1. is absolutely valid but I assume they mean "50.000$ prize pool split between the top finishes, for example 1. 20.000, 2. 10.000, 3. and 4. 5.000, 5-8 1.000, 9-16 Rest. Just makes the most sense. 2. Correct, but having that outlet for the highest level of competitive Magic be open to all rather than locked between already being in the ingroup is very important for the game. I hope they will expand it to other countries aswell, its the most logical next step if this goes well for them. They were likely wary of investing too much into too many different areas right away. That would certainly cut down on travel expenses for a lot of people, especcially outside the US. 3. EDH got as big as it is right now is because it was cheap cards people had leftover that they weren´t able to play in 1v1 formats, its the very core of the format. Talking about 1v1 formats and their players in such a derogatory way is just stupid, you WANT tournaments to do well even if you don´t play any 1v1 formats because if there is more focus on 1v1 formats again you will benefit by proxy because this isn´t a zero sum game. Its like you´re playing tennis with friends in your free time and insulting players at Wimbledon for being sweaty and competitive.
@@behemoth9543 my issue is having that mindset while playing edh. Its fine to go play the 1v1 formats and be competitive, just dont be that way at the casual edh pod. WotC not using existing names for things has always struck me as weird. Despite minor differences, these are essentially just Grand Prixs, and Pioneer is just Extended.
5:33 they make money on these events, they do Not lose money. No matter how much logistics and planning is involved. Hasbro will not take a risk with their bottom line, they've already had to prove this is profitable. Expect a decent sized entry fee for each tournament you plan to participate in. They will also probably have product for sale at a price slightly cheaper than LGSes are able to sell for.
Forget the nomenclature, I honestly dont understand why is WotC being so conservative about the number of Spotlights. Grand Prixes/Fests attendance was going steadily up over the years before Covid, breaking record after record for attendance.
Im sad that the Atlanta SLS is going to be Standard Format. I live in North Georgia and so this would be the only one of these I could possibly afford to attend for the year. I can't afford to play Standard though. I have a plethora of decks for Commander, Pauper, Modern, and Pioneer though. So it would have been nice to have a realistic chance at the main event. I know they have other side events, but I really would like to have a shot at least, at that 50,000 dollars. Even if I don't win, I'd at least like a shot at it.
Honestly I like the cons because I don't feel I need to be an expert to play. Let's be honest, trying to win a tournament like this is like trying to get into the MLB. My chances are close to nil. Will they still continue cons? Or is it over because of the Spotlight Series?
How did this video get created and posted so soon after the announcement? Did TCC have advanced info? I'm not saying that would be bad; honestly, it would be encouraging to hear that WotC is communicating and coordinating with TCC.
My two biggest problems: 1. People abbreviate Grand Prix as GP. I don’t think that type of abbreviation for Spotlight Series is a very good idea because of, y’know. 2. Prof kept says “grand prixs” when the correct pluralization is “Grands Prix”. I thought you were an English major!

Granted wizards continues to take L’s so in the end you probably aren’t really missing anything.
The question isn’t population of the area, it’s population of magic players with disposable income. I know Jack shit about Europe, but I do know that America is the consumerism capital of the world
Spotlight series sounds like a livestream where they announce upcoming products. So many good ideas with boneheaded implementation. Playboosters too expensive, secret lairs need to be made to order, wtf was that phyrexian storyline?, bring back blocks.. All these new planes feel paper thin because we get one set and move on. The spotlight is a good idea, but a terrible name, and yeah, maybe they could find a way to do more of them
I think the name is only an issue right now. If they keep it for a few years it will earn the same pedigree the GP name has. Though with a way less cool acronym. That said, I would prefer they just call them GPs either way.
This feels like a response to Pokemon's modern Regional Championships especially with the cash(?) prizing. The sad part is Pokemon probably copied MTG years ago when it was starting out.
Prof, why does all your videos cite "Vintage Education" by Kevin MacLeod as the music, when Vintage Education is just the name of your logo music and doesn't even happen in videos like this one?
Dear Sir, Dear Very learned Sir, I'm, sadly, missing the pioneer league, interrest and or input for at least 2 years at the moment of making this remark. In particular, the focus on a cheap, $25,- (rally)Deck. (to compensate or evening out for "any wallet advantage" one can have over the oppent) ; also known as "Old School Magic"?! Not as in "pauper" (as in just Commens and Uncommens), tho as in "throw in your backpack" and play casual for a longer set of time, even with or without minor changes to this rally-deck. As a well-known wise prof could have said... NOT playing the wallet. I do imagine this shift in focus is due to the vision of the output of WOTC. Lets make a reshift towards the "OG" of the Gathering. Okay, Modern, as in playing the wallet and the meta. has its nich and is being vision of WOTC. Elderly Dragon Highlander. also known as Commander and usally over $100,- for a new "glossy" deck, is a singleton many player and above 30 minutes expresion of the Gathering, with the exeption of competitive Elderly Dragon Highlander. But what happend to Old School, kitchen and or canteen table Magic? Yours, a long time follower, from Rotterdam Not-Mitchigan

The spotlight is a good idea, but a terrible name, and yeah, maybe they could find a way to do more of them
"Worldwide" with huge air quotes
Wt about official judge; they Will do something about It?
I think the name is only an issue right now. If they keep it for a few years it will earn the same pedigree the GP name has. Though with a way less cool acronym. That said, I would prefer they just call them GPs either way.
Spotlights are thematically small and used to target a small number, often one person. It's a weird name choice.
For all the money WoTC has they are offering a really light cash prize.
How much do you think is a "big" (but realistic) prize pool?
How did you get this out so fast, the announcement was less than an hour ago
He was probably told about it in advance.
New Grand Prix alert!
'all over the world' - NA and Europe
They need a better name than "Spotlight Series"
GP’s are sweet
22:34 As a millennial I was given trauma by this statement 😂
5:51 let's not forget me, in South Africa......
This feels like a response to Pokemon's modern Regional Championships especially with the cash(?) prizing.
The sad part is Pokemon probably copied MTG years ago when it was starting out.
if the only major modern event all year is in EU I'm going to be pissed
Great positive video 👍
Prof, why does all your videos cite "Vintage Education" by Kevin MacLeod as the music, when Vintage Education is just the name of your logo music and doesn't even happen in videos like this one?
It literally played twice during the video.
@@TolarianCommunityCollege Hey, sorry about that
Give me one those decks bruv!

$50,000 prize = 1 Magic the Gathering collector booster box in 2025.
OMG do it in New York City!!!!
Wait… did wizards do something that is actually good for the community???!! I kept waiting for proff to say “BUT…..” but he never did
4:32 "why not call them Gaund Prix?"
because they are Grand Prix
"We have decided to introduce the new form of competitive event, the Great Prix. Nothing to do with the Grand Prix of old of course."
Like everyone still is calling X Twitter, we will just be calling this GP's instead of spotlight events...
You're a Grand Prix! /jokin
Netherlands got lucky again🎉🎉🎉
“Spotlight Series” doesn’t sound like an open event. It sounds like an invitational event “spotlighting” specific players. But whatever.
1:05 - "no prerequisites required"... you mean other than not living in Australia, right? :/
Yeah but that’s a given
Tbf that’s not a prerequisite that’s a restriction, and it is pretty lame
I just started playing a week ago I'm so lost please help
shame there's none in aus
The goofy ill do it again had me rolling
sucks for me, living in an australia. good luck to everyone in the US, EU and japan.
Cries in South East Asia
The plural of "Grand Prix" is "Grands Prix." 😊
Dear Sir,
Dear Very learned Sir,
I'm, sadly, missing the pioneer league, interrest and or input for at least 2 years at the moment of making this remark.
Thanks for considering Latin America, the community in Mexico is huge and we feel left out by wizards 😢
just a normal day in Brazil
Maybe I’ll get into standard again I love when Magic gets competitive. Thanks for an informative video prof!
Wotc consistently ignoring their massive fanbase in Canada
Calling them gp is the same as admitting the mistake
Australia misses out again
