Hello, Russell. In my city, the carousels have all closed, the owner of x5 decided to change the concept of stores and work through more numerous stores, instead of hypermarkets. You can see for yourself that such hypermarkets are not very popular in Russia, and it is difficult to compete with such giants as Auchan, Metro, Lenta, etc., so x5 will work in the direction of small department stores of the "at home" type

As far as I know X5 Group is slowly closing Karusel and it's happening for years now. There was a Karusel shop in my city 3-5 years ago and it was closed the same way that you show in the video. Frankly I thought that they already closed all of this shops but apparently there was some of them still working.
This chain has been closing all the stores for 2 years. They have just a couple of big ones left in Russia, not a single one in Saint Petersburg, for example. Every time before closing they make enormous sales - probably that's why the store from the video is empty.

Dear Russell, you have been living in Russia for a while, you know that the shopping culture of Russians is different from Westerners, Westerners are used to shopping for the week on Friday evening or Saturday, Russians have not this shopping culture, Russians or Slavs in general buy for the day, so go to the store every day Moreover, the density of Supermarkets in Russia is ten times greater than in the West.
Thanks for commenting, Pascal, i completely agree with you, even i am shopping almost daily now buying small amounts of food for a day or two. We goto our small food market and see our usual butcher or to the lady for eggs or cheese. It really was one of the things my wife never understood in Australia when I took her to the supermarket and get a basket and walk up and own literally every aisle.

X5 started to closing down Karusels a long time before sanctions. They decided to abandon this brand a long time ago, it has nothing to do with the sanctions.
I don't understand why, but my wife and I live in Smolensk, and we have been getting items we've never seen before! Food wise, it is the best it's ever been. Maybe the quality items that are normally sold to the EU are now sold to Russians.
I would say the same for the soft drinks, after "coke" and "pepsi" said they left we have more choices than ever before. Of course "dobra" brand is from the same factories as Coz Cola, and it was announced recently Everess is going to be making a new "Pepsi" which is the same company anyway.
You need way more people to run than a corner store or a store say the size of Aldi. I don't live in Russia but in Latin America. But we have a similar situation. We have about 20 corner stores that stock everything and 4 store the size of Aldi in a town of 20,000 people and swells to 50,000 for holidays and long weekends. And then we have the butchers and bakers and veggie markets. It works. Closest super/hyper market is 20 minutes away by car.
The first signs of a slowing economy is when larger chain stores can no longer survive. They thrive on an obvious supply chain but also cheaper quantity sells. Smaller stores will always be less cost efficient. Will prices go up or will more smaller stores within close proximity to one another cause prices to drop. We shall see.
I think from what i see in Moscow there is way too many large format store like this. When most people like to shop closer to home, you don't really have that western style shopper who goes once per week and fills as basket with food. A lot of people shop daily or every other day here. Wanting to get more fresher local items.
@@TravellingwithRussell I agree. We try to shop once a week if not twice to try to eat fresh with the time afforded. I am not a fan of supper stores, but that is almost all we have in my area. My only concern is smaller stores do not have access to a supply chain for fresher fruits and veggies. Sadly in my area, most produce has been put to sleep and cold stored for later use. Keep up the good work.
I have some thoughts about why they sell uniform and "consumables" at that huge discount: Карусель stores actually should be merged with Перекресток or Пятёрочка ones, but that process be in 3 years and not over yet. So, they sell "stockings" at "self-price"
Dejavu. This already happened, more than once. They (new management of Karusel) would simply let stock run dry, for weeks, without much markdowns. It happened in Obninsk twice, in 2021 (the place is now Lenta) and this January (the place remains vacant).
I know they have said some of these stores will change over to Perekrostok. But the size of these stores are too big for them. Let's see in the coming months.

I like the shopping baskets with the pull-up handles and wheels. I wish they had them in the stores around me. They probably haven't discounted the prices because, if they own other stores, they can simply move the items there. If they store was excessively expensive, most people won't go there.
Just curious whether you've ever tried the nightlife in Moscow as Moscow is a definitely a city that never sleeps. Those things like bars und restauraces, food deliveries, 24-hr pet hospitals, you know.

There are too many variables to draw a general conclusion. It is hard to tell why some stores close, but it happens everywhere. The question is about aggregate availability and consumption. Are Russians working and earning enough to buy the things that they need? Have things become better or worse, and how do the trends compare to those in China, Europe, the US, etc.
I have to agree with you on the different variables for sure. I really think more and more people are shopping closer to home, and these kind of standalone small malls with a hypermarket just don't get the foot traffic.
Karusel is a part of X5 Retail Group. The company also have a giant chain of local stores Pyatyotochka (about 22000 stores) and chain of hypermarkets Perekryostok. They decided to convert karusel into perekrestok. On February new stores will open at old places of karusel.
IKEA Hot Dogs, one of the reasons i would go to IKEA in Moscow, otherwise they were way too crowded to shops comfortably. Especially if you went on the weekend.
Another interesting tour, thank you. In Canada🇨🇦 we have Giant Tiger, Winners, etc that sell merchandise from other stores that are out of season, overstock, near best buy date, etc. So I was thinking that maybe there are discount stores of that nature in Russia? Needed to search in Google. Karusel' is closing as a chain, cause people, just as you, Russel, prefer to make shopping in nearby small stores, without getting to hypermarket for two hours. So X5 just want to emprove Pyatyorochka chain, by closing Karusel'
Right, I can walk to so many stores all within 1km. Also, a lot of people here rely on transport, and why do so far outside of your region just for a bigger store like this.

The location of this place really is away from houses and apartments, almost every person has to drive to this store. Other stores in this mall have closed also. I was in the food court and the place was empty, even that felt strange.
I am thinking people are staying away because they know the shopping centre is in the process of shutting down, so they go to other stores where they know certain items won't be sold out. I wouldn't read too much about it closing. In the USA, supermarket stores and changes close all the time. Supermarkets have a very low proit margins. In fact, all types of chain stores in high crime Los Angeles and other urban areas are closing because of the substantial loses they sustain due to theft and crime. Usually, they are bought up by bigger supermarket chains, like a supermarket shuffle. In Mexico, they have hyper-markets that were very popular before the COVID. They had thier fresh own juices and coffeehouses (Starbucks-like), dinner areas, etc. You could sit down and eat a rotisserie chicken dinner or have a latte with a scone. Shopping could be a very a pleasant experience, without the high price. But now, they are all closed. No baristas or juicers. Hyper-markets are much less busy in Mexico than they were. I remember how it was sometimes hard to find a place to sit down to enjoy my latte. Whole different change in mexican consumer behavior.
When i see stores like this in America I figure there’s a restructuring coming to avoid closure or bankruptcy. It sounds like this closure was planned by the comments I’m seeing. For Russia I always think of money laundering seeing something like this , but perhaps this case doesn’t fit that.
@@TravellingwithRussell In other stores, Target closed in Canada in 2015 because they couldn’t keep their stores stocked due to them being clumsy with supply chain. It was even worse than shopping in the USSR!

This chain has been closing all the stores for 2 years. They have just a couple of big ones left in Russia, not a single one in Saint Petersburg, for example. Every time before closing they make enormous sales - probably that's why the store from the video is empty.
There closing on the 12th of February. i was really hoping for more specials though this close to the store closure.

Dear Russell, you have been living in Russia for a while, you know that the shopping culture of Russians is different from Westerners, Westerners are used to shopping for the week on Friday evening or Saturday, Russians have not this shopping culture, Russians or Slavs in general buy for the day, so go to the store every day
Moreover, the density of Supermarkets in Russia is ten times greater than in the West.
@@TravellingwithRussell I had the same problem with my wife who is Russian, she did not understand that we fill the shopping carts to the maximum

X5 started to closing down Karusels a long time before sanctions. They decided to abandon this brand a long time ago, it has nothing to do with the sanctions.
Thanks for the extra information. I appreciate that.

I think the problem with these supermarkets is that they are not big enough for weekly shopping and too big for daily shopping.
Right, kind of caught in the middle.
I guess going forward they don't need anything at all. So, no point keeping the branded packaging.
@@TravellingwithRussell exactly, even if they merged, that branded stuff is become useless.

The location of this place really is away from houses and apartments, almost every person has to drive to this store. Other stores in this mall have closed also. I was in the food court and the place was empty, even that felt strange.
The causal relationship is different - not there are no people and therefore it closes, but it closes and therefore there are no people.
I am thinking people are staying away because they know the shopping centre is in the process of shutting down, so they go to other stores where they know certain items won't be sold out. Secondly, Did you show a beer vending machine? Interesting. They don't have those in Canada. Thirdly, why are they shutting that centre down?

Remember how you asked "what sanctions?" hahaha
When i see stores like this in America I figure there’s a restructuring coming to avoid closure or bankruptcy. It sounds like this closure was planned by the comments I’m seeing. For Russia I always think of money laundering seeing something like this , but perhaps this case doesn’t fit that.
this store was redundant in X5 family
I wonder why they took on the brand to start with.
Paulig is a Finnish coffee brand
Russia is collapsing while Ukraine is winning in every measure.

49.99 RUB = .64 Euro or 70 cents USD...wow
Right, also the ruble vs. the dollar has gone back closer to last year's rates also.
Still better than Target Canada 🤣
You do have Tomato ketchup potato chips though.
@@TravellingwithRussell In other stores, Target closed in Canada in 2015 because they couldn’t keep their stores stocked due to them being clumsy with supply chain. It was even worse than shopping in the USSR!
Nice Russia from Indonesian
Looks like US store shelves, no lie man.
This chain of stores has since closed in Russia now.
