  • Today’s video is of SR Unrebuilt Battle of Britain Class Light Pacific 4-6-2 34067 Tangmere on the Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express promoted by Railway Touring Company and operated by West Coast Railways. The tour originated from London Euston, heading up the WCML via Milton Keynes, Rugby, Nuneaton, Crewe and Preston with a class 86 electric taking the train as far as Carnforth where the 86 was swapped for 34067 Tangmere. The train then headed up to Carlisle, returning later on via the S&C to Preston from where the 86 took the train back to London. Although WCR was recently served with a revocation of use for slam door stock, they've made clear their intent to continue operating so have put together a rake of Mk2s. This was the first mainline tour in the diary for 2024 and I couldn't miss it!
    I started out from my local at a rather undignified 06:41 in the morning, heading up to Newcastle and across the Tyne Valley Line running the breadth of the country to Carlisle. After that I took train to Oxenholme (after Avanti cancelled the one I intended to get) and met ‪@harnettyrailways‬. We both set up in the field just north of the station, and awaited the very delayed WCME (this was because the 86 failed before departure from Euston). Unfortunately 34067's changeover took longer than I'd hoped so I had to miss my train from Oxenholme back to Carlisle. However, my spirits were raised by a fantastic runpast from 34067 with no diesel assistance! Luckily, because she was running so late, I took a gamble and assumed that the next train to Kirkby Stephen would be ahead of 34067, and after taking an Avanti service to Carlisle, this proved true. However, I didn't have enough time when I arrived at Kirkby Stephen to get to my originally planned location of Birkett Common because 34067 was directly behind me so I took another gamble and tried out a field just to the North I'd spotted whilst coming into the station (which was just beyond a speed restriction caused by an unstable cutting!) and I think it worked quite well as she powered through the Northern Fells, gathering speed up the gradient for the final stretch to Ais Gill! After that I headed back through Carlisle and Newcastle on my way home.
    I hope you enjoy as I did!

    Good work, as usual. Captured the distinctive exhaust sound nicely, and a lovely mellow whistle in the first scene.

    Oh is that 34067 Tangmere? I might get a Hornby model of that to pull my mainline wagons around Cardinal ways.

    Lovely beat of Tangmere 👍🏻 It passed the rear of my house as I live just north of Preston at Barton 😀 I see WCR are using Mk2 coaches now 🤔 Is that because they have electric door locks?

    • @crunchynutsteamfilms5043
      @crunchynutsteamfilms5043  6 месяцев назад

      Than you very much, she sounded great! The Mk2 coaches are a temporary measure, because in early January WCR were served with a revocation of an exception that allowed them to run Mk1s without central door locking. Because of this they've had to assemble a fleet of Mk2s which do have CDL whilst they fit it to the Mk1s! Regards, Dan

    Do such heritage trains HAVE to consist of a disiesel at the rear?

    • @crunchynutsteamfilms5043
      @crunchynutsteamfilms5043  6 месяцев назад +1

      They don't, but are unfortunately becoming increasingly common due to their usefulness in providing heating to coaches, assistance on gradients or in fire risk situations and helping out on turning moves. I'd like to see more tours run without them but this sadly isn't something I'm in charge of lol. Regards, Dan

    Anyone know what went wrong on the way south? 40 minutes late at Carlisle, another two and a half hours later at Preston, cancelled at Crewe. I hope their customers were put on trains from Preston, because there was nothing back to Euston from Crewe after it arrived there.

    • @NickGarswood
      @NickGarswood 6 месяцев назад

      Points failure at Preston. 3 hours late so couldn't make it in time to get through the planned overnight block at Stafford. Terminated at Crewe
      Passengers bused to their destinations. Extremely late night/morning.

    • @crunchynutsteamfilms5043
      @crunchynutsteamfilms5043  6 месяцев назад

      Quite a lot went wrong with the tour in the end, so the initial 40 late departure from Carlisle was caused by late running on the outward that meant servicing ran into the time of departure. Last I heard is exactly what Nick says, points failure and coaches from Crewe to avoid a bloc at Stafford. I can imagine they really weren't hoping for the first tour of 2024 to go that badly! I was on this charter. In fairness to the RTC, they have offered a full refund to all passengers, even though it was not their fault, but all down to the failure of Network Rails infrastructure, yet again.
