Thanks for the detailed review! You helped me decide on a Modius / Asgard 3 stack rather than an Asgard 3 with built in multibit card. Maybe one day I’ll get to hear the multibit sound, but the features and components in this DAC sound like an incredible value.
Given that, in your opinion, there's about a 5% difference (in favor of XLR) between balanced/unbalanced output, in the presence of an amplifier that has only single-ended input, would it be possible to regain that loss by connecting the Modius's XLR output to a single-ended RCA input, via the proper adapter?
Love that you test dac's with cd players and transports I don't know of any other youtube reviewers that do so, I dont use any computer audio i strictly use CD and vinyl

I never used the asgard 3 dac But I love the Marantz 8006 the amp pairs up with a wide range of speakers !! Let us know how you like it ! I left mine on for 2 weeks for quick burn in . also comes with a 625va toridal transformer , In our review we said 600va we was wrong its bigger 😆

I’ve been using the Marantz for a few weeks already and it replaced an Onkyo TX SR705. This PM8006 has rhythm and pace and the grip it has on the sub’s on my towers is awesome. It the best receiver I’ve ever owned hands down.✌🏼

@@joeslacker1020 For their price i love the 530s theirs a reason why me and Zeos will keep them their a very popular speaker and The lowend bass will have you shocked they are on the warm side of netural so you don't want an overly warm amp with pairing , the cheapest amp i got that makes them rock and to sound great is the IOTA-STACK but these speakers like powaaa ! Their rated at 6 ohms nominal impendence but their 4ohms minimum impendence meaning they play in the 4-ohm range most of the time so they do like a powerful amp ,but as i move up in amps by pricepoint the speakers just keep scaling up ! My favorite amp pairing is my Yamaha AS-1100 or My Doge 10 tube integrated its a 59 pound beast also Yamaha makes a AS-1000 you might be able to find a used one for cheap or even a Yamaha AS801 . but yeah just be careful not pairing up a warm amp like Denon and my audiolab amps didn't pair up well either . Try Yamaha

Hello and TY for these great reviews. Plz...I've been considering the Emotiva BasX A-300 and PT-100 ("Monster Setup") but now thinking the A-300 amp and Modius DAC then components. Do you think this is/maybe a better setup option(since you've reviewed both)? Since A-300 inputs are unbalanced can I still run the balanced outputs of the Modius to unbalanced hookup or would I have to run RCA out of Modius to Amp? Thanks man my loan lease ran out of time , I didn't want to buy it i have to many dacs . modius is a solid dac for pricepoint also one thing i have learned its not that one dac is better than the other its about having the right dac for your system that you like my friend ! I tell ya though the freya pre images like crazy !!!!

Well, I'm kinda new in this hobby but it's my 2nd Schiit device bought in the past 2 months , Hel for gaming and Modius for listening to music on my desktop PC. What's a good upgrade path like? I'm contemplating to get a Schiit amp to power bookshelf speakers in the future. Currently, Modius is connected to my PC via USB input and output is via XLR wired to Kanto YU4.
Great review. Not much out there yet on the modius. Currently upgrading from the modi which on its way back during my trial. Couldn't afford the bitfrost 2 at more than triple the cost. Also sending Heresy back and upgrading to the Jotunheim to take advantage of balanced from the modius. Asgard 3 was a choice, but wanted a fully balanced system. Headphone cables are on order as well. Should be good for a few years. Famous last words

I had the modi 3. It sounded good, but it's aimed at those who like a softer, more forgiving treble. It's smooth and analog-like, but Modius sounds more neutral and revealing. The modius DAC measures as good as $$$$ DAC's. It's the first Schiit audio DAC to measure better than topping. Low noise floor, low jitter...it's just a better DAC.
It's got a new DAC chip too so it's not a great surprise that it sounds better. Schiit have been putting AKM 4490 DAC's in all their non multibit products recently. Yhis is their first non multibit product with the newer AKM 4493 DAC chip that has a higher spec. It also has a better Shiit exclusive USB chip too, so hopefully those annoying USB connection problems on the Modi series are over, I would certainly hope so for a $199 DAC only product, whatever other balanced bells and whistles it has nothing that expensive should ever have USB connection problems.
In the video , I mentioned i would have a comparrsion Schiit Modius vs Aune X8 When i have the review of the Aune x8 They have 2 totally different sound characters hopefully by this coming weekend i will have the Aune Overview , I put alot of time into both of them so it will be a full breakdown 😆

You should try and get yourself an ifi ipurify 3 that works in the same type of way it is a reclocker USB and lower the Noise by 100 times interested to try it out on the other schiit modi and on this Modius should help a lot as well. And another thing what USB lead are using? you want to have one without power you could cut the power off a USB lead the red wire that help your sound as well if it doesn't need to be powered from USB of course. That's good that audiolab transport how does it compare to your CD player ? are you going to get the amp 8300a What are those feet you're using

I have a Modi 3 that I’m using with an Emotiva PT-100. Big improvement over the internal dac (w/ AD1955 chip). But now I’m wondering if I should upgrade to the Modius or something better. I can still return the Modi 3. Any other dacs you’d recommend for under $500 or so?
Hello Tee-Jay Based on your review, which was excellent I bought myself the Modius, Let me to describe what I’m thinking of it, not only it’s beautiful very well made, it’s fantastic. I’ll give you an example then you’ll understand better, it’s like you are in a room with 15 or 20 wats light globe, suddenly the room becomes very very bright like a daytime, that’s what it looks like it.when I hook up my Modius DAC. To be honest with you, in the past I had quite a few DAC,s but nothing like this it just brilliant I am so happy, thank you very much again. I didn’t expect any less of it, because it’s been made in America that says it all
Balanced connections are immune to interference, provide more power and less noise. Balanced connections are a must for long run distances but also for very noise environments like a computer desktop or a studio. They bring so many advantages over unbalanced RCA that XLR should be the standard... in fact, they are the standard in the professional market. Sadly companies keep using stupid unbalanced RCA connections to save some bucks even with fully balanced DAC chips, it's a shame because every DAC chip for the last 20 years, even the cheapest ones are intrinsically balanced and give you a balanced signal right out of the box... you don't have to do anything special, you have it "for free"... but companies keep using unbalanced rca is really really stupid!!!

G'day, thanks for the review. I have two of these both running balanced into a Bryston Pre. Regulated power supply. I agree with your review. In the past few months I have owned the Modi 3, excellent but with the limitations you mentioned, both sold. Topping D30 and E30, the E30's all sold. The Khadas Tone board is a keeper as it is just so nice and musical to listen to, it also does DSD. I now have the Modius and in a word it just makes music sound great. Oh and the dynamics can scare you. Cheers. I am now happy to stay at home and wash my hands.
@@musicxxa6678 The E30 was good, It is a very good DAC. I still think I preferred the Modi3 and particularly the Khadas Tone board. Each listener will have it's own opinion. That is why I tried them all. My pre amp has two balanced inputs and it just made sense to upgrade to the Modius. I am still very happy with it.

I have heard good things about the 4499 chip but its the power supply and circuit that helps alot also , I have had 2 digital integrated amps different companys both around the same price and they both have the Es sabre 9014 chip and The Audiolab 6000a built in dac iems like wth !!! But it is 1k 😆 the other one 899.00US lol don't wanna say which one but it sucked !
@@tee-jaythestereo-bargainph2120 Yes the chip is one aspect. I own both SMSL M300 MKII and Teac UD-505 that have the 4497 and their DAC portion sound so close. I much prefer the edgier and more live sound of recent AKM's compared to my Modi Multibit that I find darker, more laid back and relax... even through Beyerdynamic T1 1st gen and a Violectric V200 amp ! All of this is a matter of taste of course. The Multibit sounds more organic and natural though, voices and saxonphone are quite good. Was glad to see that Schiit is building a DAC with something newer than AK4490. If they ever come up with a 4497 or 4499 DAC in one of their product (I would guess in the Gungnir) I will give it a shot.
Any suggestions on Modius vs Bifrost2? Multibit should be better than Delta sigma? If the modius is 30% better than the modi3 then how much better is the bifrost2 compared to the Modius?
@@Feliciano12v using in rca just the regular modi3. i actually upgraded again to the schiit bifrost 2 and that upgrade sounded much much better. modius and modi3 was almost identical. in a blind ab test i might not be able to tell the difference. bifrost 2 on the other hand is in a whole different league
Thanks Tee-Jay. I watched this review when you first posted it and thought I would reserve commenting until I heard a bit more from your fellow compatriot reviewers. It appears you all concur... Schiit has done what they do best, offer real value for the money. I mean 200USD for a better chip (over the Modi3) plus it's balanced? Now, I know this DAC is not going to be at the same level as a Bifrost 2 but it's sure-as-schiit hit that marketing gap right between the Modi 3 and the Bifrost. At 200USD I challenge anyone to find a Chinese DAC that can compete with this kind of value. I am not knocking the Chinese at all ... that's not the point... it's just real nice to see an American company produce the kind of value that Schiit builds into their product line. I'm Canadian and I'd like to see some Schiit magic happen up here as well. In the mean time .... I wonder what's next. How about a tube buffer.... I Schiit-thee-not, they are cool units if used and built right. Again, thanks Tee-Jay. (I actually own 3 pieces of Schiit ... so far)
I have the Modius , Loki , Freya + preamp , and my amp with just inputs, I'm trying to hook all this up so the inputs on the preamp that I use , run the cd player, ect. and still have the benefits from the loki and modius, from what i can see it wont work, any thoughts on this....
Run the cd player digital output into the Modius then run analog out from modius into the analog input of the loki then run analog out of loki into analog input of Freya plus pronlem solved 😃
If your bluetooth reciever has a digital output you can but if the bluetooth reciever only has analog outputs then no .What bluetooth reciever do you have ?

I've got both. They're excellent. Modius is better. Balanced and newer DAC chip. Modi is my computer's sound ouput device and Modius is in my main system feeding my Freya S preamp.
I been wanting to try the freya plus wirh the Emotiva a300 and modius the modius has been my goto comparrsion to other dacs on great recordings it shine shines
I own the Schiit modi multibit, and don't really like the sound. I do like the mani phono amp. And i mean really, really like. Anyway, i may like the modius from what I'm hearing!
I have never tried the modi multibit , i had one subscriber who said he loved his but its all about how the dac reacts to your particular system , schiit had a two week test trial but if you dont like its s 15 percent restock fee

You should try and get yourself an ifi ipurify 3 that works in the same type of way it is a reclocker USB and lower the Noise by 100 times interested to try it out on the other schiit modi and on this Modius should help a lot as well. And another thing what USB lead are using? you want to have one without power you could cut the power off a USB lead the red wire that help your sound as well if it doesn't need to be powered from USB of course.
That's good that audiolab transport how does it compare to your CD player ? are you going to get the amp 8300a

I have a Modi 3 that I’m using with an Emotiva PT-100. Big improvement over the internal dac (w/ AD1955 chip). But now I’m wondering if I should upgrade to the Modius or something better. I can still return the Modi 3. Any other dacs you’d recommend for under $500 or so?

Let me to describe what I’m thinking of it, not only it’s beautiful very well made, it’s fantastic.
I’ll give you an example then you’ll understand better, it’s like you are in a room with 15 or 20 wats light globe, suddenly the room becomes very very bright like a daytime, that’s what it looks like it.when I hook up my Modius DAC. To be honest with you, in the past I had quite a few DAC,s but nothing like this it just brilliant I am so happy, thank you very much again.
I didn’t expect any less of it, because it’s been made in America that says it all

Why would I need the balanced output?
Many reasons , Lower noise longer cable runs without any loss and somepeople will use with power speakers 😆
Balanced connections are immune to interference, provide more power and less noise. Balanced connections are a must for long run distances but also for very noise environments like a computer desktop or a studio. They bring so many advantages over unbalanced RCA that XLR should be the standard... in fact, they are the standard in the professional market.
Sadly companies keep using stupid unbalanced RCA connections to save some bucks even with fully balanced DAC chips, it's a shame because every DAC chip for the last 20 years, even the cheapest ones are intrinsically balanced and give you a balanced signal right out of the box... you don't have to do anything special, you have it "for free"... but companies keep using unbalanced rca is really really stupid!!!

G'day, thanks for the review. I have two of these both running balanced into a Bryston Pre. Regulated power supply. I agree with your review. In the past few months I have owned the Modi 3, excellent but with the limitations you mentioned, both sold. Topping D30 and E30, the E30's all sold. The Khadas Tone board is a keeper as it is just so nice and musical to listen to, it also does DSD. I now have the Modius and in a word it just makes music sound great. Oh and the dynamics can scare you. Cheers. I am now happy to stay at home and wash my hands.

@@musicxxa6678 The E30 was good, It is a very good DAC. I still think I preferred the Modi3 and particularly the Khadas Tone board. Each listener will have it's own opinion. That is why I tried them all. My pre amp has two balanced inputs and it just made sense to upgrade to the Modius. I am still very happy with it.

It's good to know there isn't too much a difference between XLR and RCA. Many amps (for speakers) under a grand only have RCA inputs.
Very tempting DAC, I'm a big fan of AKM DACs, I hope the Gungnir DeltaSigma will get updated with AK4497 or 4499 in a near future.
I have heard good things about the 4499 chip but its the power supply and circuit that helps alot also , I have had 2 digital integrated amps different companys both around the same price and they both have the Es sabre 9014 chip and The Audiolab 6000a built in dac iems like wth !!! But it is 1k 😆 the other one 899.00US lol don't wanna say which one but it sucked !
@@tee-jaythestereo-bargainph2120 Yes the chip is one aspect. I own both SMSL M300 MKII and Teac UD-505 that have the 4497 and their DAC portion sound so close. I much prefer the edgier and more live sound of recent AKM's compared to my Modi Multibit that I find darker, more laid back and relax... even through Beyerdynamic T1 1st gen and a Violectric V200 amp ! All of this is a matter of taste of course. The Multibit sounds more organic and natural though, voices and saxonphone are quite good. Was glad to see that Schiit is building a DAC with something newer than AK4490. If they ever come up with a 4497 or 4499 DAC in one of their product (I would guess in the Gungnir) I will give it a shot.

@@Feliciano12v using in rca just the regular modi3. i actually upgraded again to the schiit bifrost 2 and that upgrade sounded much much better. modius and modi3 was almost identical. in a blind ab test i might not be able to tell the difference. bifrost 2 on the other hand is in a whole different league

all concur... Schiit has done what they do best, offer real value for the money. I mean 200USD
for a better chip (over the Modi3) plus it's balanced? Now, I know this DAC is not going to be
at the same level as a Bifrost 2 but it's sure-as-schiit hit that marketing gap right between the
Modi 3 and the Bifrost. At 200USD I challenge anyone to find a Chinese DAC that can compete
with this kind of value. I am not knocking the Chinese at all ... that's not the point... it's just real
nice to see an American company produce the kind of value that Schiit builds into their product
line. I'm Canadian and I'd like to see some Schiit magic happen up here as well. In the mean time

I have the Modius , Loki , Freya + preamp , and my amp with just inputs, I'm trying to hook all this up so the inputs on the preamp that I use , run the cd player, ect. and still have the benefits from the loki and modius, from what i can see it wont work, any thoughts on this....
Run the cd player digital output into the Modius then run analog out from modius into the analog input of the loki then run analog out of loki into analog input of Freya plus pronlem solved 😃

I've got both. They're excellent. Modius is better. Balanced and newer DAC chip. Modi is my computer's sound ouput device and Modius is in my main system feeding my Freya S preamp.
I been wanting to try the freya plus wirh the Emotiva a300 and modius the modius has been my goto comparrsion to other dacs on great recordings it shine shines
I own the Schiit modi multibit, and don't really like the sound. I do like the mani phono amp. And i mean really, really like. Anyway, i may like the modius from what I'm hearing!
I have never tried the modi multibit , i had one subscriber who said he loved his but its all about how the dac reacts to your particular system , schiit had a two week test trial but if you dont like its s 15 percent restock fee

Great review of the Modius. I only wish Schiit had used a standard USB input. I am eagerly awaiting your review of the Aune X8 DAC and comparison to the Modius. The ability to use op amps in the Aune might be a game changer for only $100 more.
