Most of the people I know who own an iPhone, already have their screens cracked, the general cause being that they dropped it on a pavement/sidewalk. I've had that think for 2 years and that was the first Crack in the screen

Looove the Galaxy S3. True, it takes some know-how and a custom ROM to push it to it's full potential, but it is quite a good candidate to compare with the iPhone 5. I'm a guy so I don't mind having a large device, I'm not weak and I have large hands so I got an extended battery. A custom ROM later and over clocked CPU, it beats the stock S4 in performance to provide zero latency. I seriously recommend trying out the s3 with a custom ROM (it's not that hard) before you totally blow it off. IPhone 5 is a sexy phone though, with comparable specs.

It depends on how it lands look at Android Authority's drop test on the iPhone 5 vs HtC one drop test and the iPhone cracks on the first drop. PhoneBuff is a way more accurate drop tester because of the machine to do it. And he did drop the s3 on the chest drop on the screen on purpose.

I've dropped my S3 20+ times, I have no display damage and only a few visable scuffs and scratches. Mine is not special, and I have no case. In fact, I have dropped my phone from above waist height many times, and it's landed on its front many times, absolutely no damage.
I'd like to note, since it's what you hate the most - that whilst he mentioned that the GS3's screen assembly costs around $300 for replacement (try replacing just the glass, it's really bad news bears, bubbles, gaps, adhesive shmoots); whilst the iPhone 5's screen costs $80 to replace.

The extent of damage depends on how your phone is dropped and the point of impact. Corner drops tend to do more damage than a drop on the back. This is why bumper cases are so effective. iPhone 5 (and now 5s and) are Well built better than the S3. The metal has more give than plastic.
You can´t be that smart if you call this test realistic... I dont like the IPhone but neither the S3, I´ll go for Sony, but this test just tells you nothing. I´ve seen more Iphones with a broken Display than with a healthy one. But i´´ve seen also many broken Samsung devices... But it all depends on the way its dropped on the ground, if both would fall the exact same way, from the exact same height and with the same Speed, than you could compare both drop tests. A more realistic test to show which display holds more would be not to drop the phones, but dropping wheight on the phones, the phone that needs more wheight to be cracked would be the winner ;)
I dropped my iPhone 5 many times and its been through hell yet not even one crack it has a minor scratch on the screen that you can only see at certain times and there are some tiny spots where the paint is coming off but its still looks good, solid as hell

Looks like a tie to me. The gs3 cracked because it hit different than the iPhone. However, the iPhone might be slightly more durable to drops because it is a lighter phone. The gs3 is heavier so it will hit the ground with more energy... A simple bumper would have saved the day

On the final drop you didn't even drop the iPhone in its screen, you can tell it hit the back because it flips over and the back is facing up.

The extra drop for the iPhone from 5'9" face first was impressive, of course, Android is the OS and Samsung is the physical hardware.
On the second one he dropped the galexy from a higher distance and on the last one he was being more gentle with the iPhone 5 because it is more money! He did that with all the drops!
Life in 2012 was simply better..

If he's 5'9 fr then dropping it from the height of his ear means it's 5'8 not 6 ffs
I've dropped my S3 20+ times, I have no display damage and only a few visable scuffs and scratches. Mine is not special, and I have no case.
In fact, I have dropped my phone from above waist height many times, and it's landed on its front many times, absolutely no damage.
Cuz I bet UR dropping it in UR house not outside on the cement...

I'd like to note, since it's what you hate the most - that whilst he mentioned that the GS3's screen assembly costs around $300 for replacement (try replacing just the glass, it's really bad news bears, bubbles, gaps, adhesive shmoots); whilst the iPhone 5's screen costs $80 to replace.

You should do three drops from each height. One on the sides, one on the screens, and one of the bottom (Coz charging ports can be broken easily)

He dropped the S3 differently the 3rd time. I have had my S3 and have dropped it many times, I'm 6'3. I have MINOR cracks that are hardly noticeable. The extent of damage depends on how your phone is dropped and the point of impact. Corner drops tend to do more damage than a drop on the back. This is why bumper cases are so effective. iPhone 5 (and now 5s and) are Well built better than the S3. The metal has more give than plastic.
You can´t be that smart if you call this test realistic...
I dont like the IPhone but neither the S3, I´ll go for Sony, but this test just tells you nothing.
I´ve seen more Iphones with a broken Display than with a healthy one. But i´´ve seen also many broken Samsung devices...
But it all depends on the way its dropped on the ground, if both would fall the exact same way, from the exact same height and with the same Speed, than you could compare both drop tests.
A more realistic test to show which display holds more would be not to drop the phones, but dropping wheight on the phones, the phone that needs more wheight to be cracked would be the winner ;)
Why is this in my reccomended 6 years later
I dropped my iPhone 5 many times and its been through hell yet not even one crack it has a minor scratch on the screen that you can only see at certain times and there are some tiny spots where the paint is coming off but its still looks good, solid as hell

Wow! Hard to believe it’s been 7 year’s. The only place that theses phone are sold now is ebay. The current versions these companies have put now are apple’s iPhone 11 Pro and Samsung‘s Galaxy S10 and coming soon the Galaxy S20
My SIII dropped from a moving bus at 80 kmph and only the screen cracked. Everything other than that was fine, but My iPhone 5s dropped from a table and it shattered...
Looks like a tie to me. The gs3 cracked because it hit different than the iPhone.
However, the iPhone might be slightly more durable to drops because it is a lighter phone. The gs3 is heavier so it will hit the ground with more energy...
A simple bumper would have saved the day
