- The tornado that ripped through Taylorville, IL Saturday evening, 12 1 2018. This is more realistic but the video quality suffers. This was shot, facing ssw at Esther st and Rt 48.
This footage is truly terrifying. Born and raised in this area. I’m so thankful my family and friends are alive and well.
It was even more surreal in person. Taylorville was prepared so they didnt lose anyone.
It looks like a war zone.
Jesus. Sounds like a jet aircraft. Might be some of the best tornado audio I've heard on video. All the tornadoes seemed to have a loud roar on saturday.
Theres a grain storage place off camera to the right..it was hard to see if the dryer was on or if it was wind coming in from se..i could hear the torn over it but not sure if what we hear on the video is only that..prob a mix..
Made for some cool ambience
Yeah that was definitely a violent tornado. Had a similar roar up north with the tornado near Easton but it didnt hit anything substantial thankfully.....incredible video man. Just mind blowing.
Thanks
2018 didn't have any violent tornadoes in the US but damn the tornadoes looked good
Our buildings in town might not have survived this night but these ppl are tough. We will get through it and everything will be rebuilt w tons of help.
And no one died.
That sound is eerie. Good capture.
Thanks
Kevin, thank you for taking this video and sharing it. That was when it was right over my elderly moms house and we rode it out huddled together in her bath tub. Absolutely terrifying. I didn't realize how long it took for it to get past us...watching your video makes it seem like it moved in slow motion. I had to stop the video several times and walk away because I couldn't take hearing that sound again. But thank you again and I'm glad you're safe.
Glad you all took the sirens seriously..its remarkable how no one was killed..that early warning saved a few..
from Fulton county....I Say I'm glad you're safe. One about us where i live and we got lucky.
The roar of the tornado, along with the sirens fading in and out and the booming thunder.. this footage is amazing.
Thanks. I was in a good spot for videoing.
Wow I can not believe this went through Taylorville! It’s amazing that everyone survived! Thank you for sharing this video!
Youre welcome
People did die I was in that tornado ya no
Wait what the death toll
@@-MinnieMouse- no one died as a result of the December 1st tornado. Verified with our EMA.
This is so scary 😧 I grew up here and never once was caught in a tornado, mom and grandma used to tell me taylorville was in a ditch so we would be safe... Looks like this wasn't the case that night thank god all of my friends are okay and that no lives were taken! God bless.
You guys usually dont get tornados, much like here in Dewitt co..seems like Sw of you is more prone to getting them..glad u all cancelled your xmas parade and they activated sirens twice..that saved lives.
The T-128 sirens sound epic! Also the whooshing of the tornado really shows you the power of it, and gives you a cool light show by basically evaporating the electrical equipment
Yea, it was overwhelming.
Wow this footage has me awestruck. You can feel the power of this tornado. Hope no one was hurt or worse. Prayers...…..
No one died..very fortunate.
the roar is just amazing.
Some of that is the ADM plant but the torn was about equally as loud and same sound, which was really strange.
Damn, that thing is huge. I was watching this tornado on radar and the rotation was very very strong. I been trying to find a video of this twister but couldnt find one untill now. Thank you for risking your life to film this monster, even tho u didnt have to do that
Thanks
The best video of a tornado that I have seen.
Thanks
My dad's childhood home (Shumway & 613 West Second St.) was destroyed in this tornado. What a miracle that there were no fatalities! Impressive that the house survived 95 years before this.
OMG I still can't believe I survived this in a truck!!! Parked parrell to some shops at the last minute on corner of spresser and cheney facing West. I thought the worse Im 34 and I have never faced death or felt that scared in my life! My kids (4,6,and 13) were braver than me (although maybe they were in shock).
I can only imagine
Yep...If it was 1/2 mile wide it was on both of us at the same time. I was on W Rich st. It ripped some siding off and the wooden frames around the windows but the house stayed up. Neighbors had porches in our yard. It’s weird how it almost skips some houses then pulverizes the next one.
@@rad1965
What time was it when it touched down
@@jasminewashington6728 it was approx 5:20 pm.
@@rad1965
Ok thanks
I was a schwan's man in that area for several years, I was in that area that day, I was fortunate that a very nice family allowed me to seek shelter in their basement with them. That whole area is full of just the nicest people you'll ever meet.
Man dude that has to be one of the best roars ever caught on film. Plus with the enchanment you can see some horizontal vorticies, multiple vorticies, and upward rolling of the tornado itself. Reminds me of Tuscaloosa.
It was amazing that there were no fatalities..as i approached from the northeast, there was a lot of traffic headed out of town..glad it didnt go right up rt 48.
Thanks
This is an epic video! Loved it! And! Omg your car lights are so bright and beautifully adjusted man! Our car headlamps have really poor quality light. Plus your cam is so good for catching everything in dark
Thanks. Its hard to get video at night. I had my brights on and the tornado was being lit by the city lights just enough to be able to see it really well. Video quality suffered but thats what it looked like if you were there. It was a serious overload to the senses. Luckily no one was killed. Taylorville sounded the sirens 40 mins before it hit and again as it got close to town. Thanks for the awesome comment.
This night view of a tornado is really impressive! Nice video!!
Thanks!
Jeeesus. Reminds me of a demonic version of the Close Encounters mothership with that structure and the flickering powerflashes.
Yea, it was pretty wild looking..overloaded the senses.
Just wondering why you say "Jesus" and not Budda or Mohammed or some other religious person. Never understood this and where it began.
@@joyfuloneforever4061 Because I grew up in Jesusland where it's the cultural norm. Every culture has their own way of swearing or exclaiming. I get references to all kinds of religious characters on my own tornado videos from people around the world that leave comments.
@@skiptalbot jesusland.lol
I was thinking the exact same thing Skip holy shit.
This video is, by far, one of the best nocturnal tornado videos I have seen; very good work. I've never seen power flashes more frequent than lightning strikes, keeping the vortex very well illuminated internally. It would have been better had the storm not happened at all, but excellent position and tracking nonetheless.
Thanks, sure got lucky, as far as video..it traveled through the northern part of the city and had the lights on it all the way.
You're welcome. I'm from central Oklahoma and work in meteorology, so I've seen my share of large tornadoes, but we don't get that many at night around here so I can imagine the added difficulty of tracking (and avoiding) them without daylight.
The problem i had was after the tornado passed, there was almost no lightning and my gps was not placing me near my location...hate when that happens.
Thanks again.
Steady shot, no hollering or cursing.
i remember this; i dont live in taylorville myself, but pretty close to it, and i remember back in 2018 going down to my grandparents basement (as me and my family lived there at the time). it was incredibly scary and i remember going there a month or so afterwards and the damage could still be seen.
Night time tornadoes are the worst
I hate nocturnal tornadoes/potentially tornadic storms.
Justin Nunnally yes they are and it is very unsafe to be in it
Wedge tornadoes are fare more
Epic, I think it does allow one to see it more clearly. The tornado was rated EF3
Thats what was thinking..either 2 or 3
Thanks
@@rad1965 You're welcome. Yes I was sure it'd get a rating above the preliminary EF2
@FreakShow91 Oh yeah, I'm waiting for them to get everything finalized.
@FreakShow91 Actually yes it was officially determined to be an EF3 :(
The fact u can see a nighttime tornado this well is amazing!
I just happened to be in a good spot with it coming into city light. It was pretty surreal to see and hear.
This is why nws strongly discourages people not to drive in the dark when tornadic storms are predicted.
Only time you can see the tornado is from LIGHTNING flashes or power flashes at night.
If neither flashes are occurring, you could end up driving straight into the path of the tornado and not realize it.
I agree...unless they have a good radar app and know how to read velocity scans.
was there to the left of this video on that side of town. well outside it actually. insane to see and feel/hear the sounds. my first tornado
I believe I was towards the outer eastern edge of the Tornado in South Hewitville as my damage was not as bad as it was just a couple hundred yards away where the center came through. In that area homes were completely destroyed. As far as the sound, yes somewhat like a train at the start when it was off in the distance, but to me being a former jet mech in the Navy, it sounded like a jet that just had an engine swap and was being tested. It was a slow but smooth and steady rise from idle (far off) to full throttle (above us), no cu-chugging like a diesel engine or the clacking of the tracks. Definitely a rush!
Being in the Northwoods, during high winds and tornadoes, because there tons and tons of trees, it sounds more like a rushing torrent of water. But yeah, I also hear the jet. And I live by railroad tracks, and it does not sound like a train. Think most people just say it is, just because it's a stereotype as to how it sounds.
Flippin scary! What a beast of a tornado!
Yea, especially for December, with atmospherical conditions not perfect.
Crazy how all that happened to us was the fence getting destroyed, but only a block or two away an entire house was almost flattened
Its those individual vottices rotating around the tornado that can do that. You guys got really lucky.
Man, just listen to that sound!
I saw and recorded this tornado too but I was by Palmer when it first touched down and it wasn't near this strong. Nice footage!
Thanks..how was the viewing down that way? Ill go watch yours..
Kevin Radley it was a little smaller. I watched it track right to left. I could have gotten closer but I decided to keep my distance since I’ve only been chasing storms for a few years.
Yea, it was hard to see with minimum lightning once it was in open areas..I followed it ne to nw of Stonington but my gps wasnt working correctly and I lost it..saw it touch down by Stonington.
I lost data once I got into Taylorville to see the damage. Wasn't a smart idea because roads were getting closed for down power lines, trees, or gas leaks. It took me about thirty minutes to figure out how to get back on that main highway.
Im glad i was north of town.
That's my hometown💔 it's still really bad
How close to the damage path were you?
We lost some power still haven't go it fully back we didnt get touched but mang others did😭
Same
Lived & living right through it's path. I was lucky. My Son, My neighbors, not so lucky.
It's amazing that no one was killed. Hard to believe it's been 3 years ago today.
When filming at night, turn off your headlight and leave just your parking lights on for safety. It will help the camera focus on the subject better.
Wow, this is incredible!
It suffers a little, but I think the overall effect is beneficial. Nice work!
Yea, this camera isnt great in low light but i wanted to show what i was seeing..it actually was even lighter in person...thanks
@Gloria Garcia thank you. I cant believe its coming up on 1 year since this event happened. Still amazed that no one was killed.
@Gloria Garcia lol he was just agreeing with me. I had to edit it to make it more life like. It was actually a bit more visible in real life but the video gets grainy as i lightened it. Thanks :))
incredible footage! how rare is it to catch a terrible nighttime twister lighted from below (by electricity that’s somehow still on despite the countless power flashes)?! i’ve never seen another video like it.
Thanks..i think it was because the main damage was being caused by smaller vortices rotating around the main tornado vortex..probably didnt lose all power..it was really a sensory overload for sure.
That was one of the creepiest tornadoes I have ever seen. The vortices reaching down were like demonic tentacles from some nightmarish creature bent on destruction and carnage. Terrifying for sure!
Towards the end, when i get into the car, there is inflow pulling into another area to camera left, that eventually dropped a brief tornado a few miles to my ene near Stonington.
OMG THIS TORNADO IS SO BIG AN THE LIGHNING IST SO SCARED!!!
Those are power lines and transformers blowing up. It wasnt lightning. Whole town was blacked out. Live lines were all over the ground. Made it hard to go outside and help ppl.
Good video Kevin! Could you add where you were parked and what direction you were facing to the video information? Appreciate you sharing the video with everyone. I grew up in Taylorville and was an advanced storm spotter for Coles County EDSA for almost 20 years.
Thanks..ill update it
Thanks so much Kevin!! I thought it might be out by ADM.
@@firebosspb7225 youre welcome..
What area was this taken at? I was stuck outside at the intersection by Mitty's pub the hail and temperature change was surreal truly terrifying. Once the power lines started lighting it up just kinda pulled over by don Bragg's and prayed it didnt shift. Half a mile from a half a mile sized F-3 was to close for comfort I never want to experience again.
I was right there as u come into taylorville on 48
I've been always trying to find a great place in illinois to get some intense tornadoes do you know any places?
Usually south of I 72, north of I 74 :)
@@rad1965 thanks
Really cool vid man, wish I could have chased Saturday.
Thanks Josh
Audio on this is like nothing I’ve ever heard. Unbelievable that something like this hit in December
It worked out good for a video and audio enviornment .barely any wind, no rain, no traffic, and city light.
Hard to believe it's been two years now since it's happened
Was just thinking that..crazy how time flies by.
My grandma is Raymond had a close call with this one, I heard there wasn't too much damage there but i'm not sure.
Yea most of the damage was in and sw Taylorville
That same cell hit just to the east of Le Roy with an EF 1 tornado.
And it all started by Staunton, IL
We literally got home from Springfield right before it hit. it was probably around 4:30 or so, and the tornado went over around 5:15
The flashing was power flashes, I assume
There was a couple of lightning flashes too.
where about where you setting and filming this please
About 50 yds nw of rt 48 and esther st
I thought it was rain wrapped...until I realized it wasn't.
Looked like it didnt it? Got big right there just as it got into Taylorville.
@@rad1965 It looked like raid curtains, but as it got closer, you could definitely tell that was all vortex and debris. Praying for recovery for everyone involved.
What video camera did you use for this video?
I had some sweet footage of this... until fb deleted my account in May. Still waiting on the reason why.
I was in tallorville Illinois when this happened
So scary at night!
I live right by Taylorville
I was in that tornado my roof came off and I nearly almost died....😥😥😥 rip to the ones that lost there homes and died........😥😥😥
No one died, but there were a few injuries
@@elijahberger5722 26 to be exact
Yeah I almost died the tornado 🌪 was in my backyard and ripped back door off and threw my garage.
On the news the cold is it possible tornado in rest in peace whoever died into the tornado
Wow and they call it a Stove Top Cloud...I call it an F3
Looks like at least a half mile wedge to me
The official report was an EF3. Winds 155. Multiple vortices. 1/2 mile wide at its strongest.
brad kirchhoff I figured that it would get at least an EF3, based on the text of the tornado emergency, which called it “extremely destructive,” I believe, and also, it said that the damage threat was “catastrophic.”
I helped with donations after
i was in the tornado it went over are houes
Did it damage your house?
Went over us too. We had siding ripped off. Window frames ripped off and a tree fell on our vehicle. We were lucky though bc we were on the SW part of Tville. 2 houses from the corner of Rich and Cheney. We could feel the house moving. Walls shook like an earthquake.
omg
3:00 i can see tornado looks like a ef1 tornado
Ef3. Winds were 15 mph less than the EF4 limit
@@btnhstillfire Very close. Last EF-4 in Illinois was the Fairdale tornado in 2015. That tornado wiped out the entire town.
Nevertheless, it looks like it's a big wedge that's an EF3+!
It did look like a wedge there for a minute or so. It was rated EF3
I like how people thought this was so fuckn cool. I must of missed the cool part in all this I and lots of others missed cuz we was to busy hiding from this so called cool thing. If tornado chasing is fun to you people then feel free to come chase down the path from it and ask the the town folk how much they enjoyed the storm and while ur at how much excitement it is to have no home now. Just as Ridiculous as the money hungry asshole contractors that try to bank off the people affected from all this.
I was in this tornado. The storm chasers are how we get info relayed to news agencies and are able to help warn ppl of bad weather. Without these storm chasers nobody can prepare. Without these chasers we never wouldve developed data to predict when they might hit. Youre an idiot.
