  • There are lots of little jobs we can do to get ready for cooler weather! Thanks to STA-BIL for sponsoring this video. If you want to check out the products I used to prepare my homestead for winter, here's the link - bit.ly/34h3eox
    Preparing the farm for winter is a big task, we spend the spring and summer growing and preserving a harvest that will get us through the winter, chopping and putting up firewood, and getting all the animals set up to thrive in colder winter. We also use our farm equipment a lot less during the winter, so it's important to winterize our small engines like chainsaws, string trimmers and lawn mowers. Proper winter chainsaw and mower maintenance is crucial to a long life for the engine.

    I live in a different climate than you, but buckwheat works well as a green manure. Germinates and grows quickly, great coverage for weed suppression, and works down well in the spring. Less risk of disease spreading (aka moulds and mildews) and as a bonus buckwheat honey is delish!

    Hi Anna
    Nearly all our cows were milked by machine but occasionally we would have to strip a cow of milk by hand. It seemed as girls my sister and I got this job, very hard on the hands. I really liked the calves poor little innocent things. We also had plenty of horses which i loved and rode almost every day.
    Thanks so much for your reply.

    Hi Anne I grew up on a farm my father was a dairy farmer. Where I live in south east Victoria it is cold through our winter (no snow though) as a girl I loved the farm and all the animals. We milked about 500 dairy cows. Although I have lived all my married life in a town your video reminds me so much of my farm life as a girl growing up on the farm. Well done.

    Hi Anne, It is great to see all the effort you put into your property and livestock, obviously you will take your livestock with you to the new location, but it must be hard to leave all those fruit trees behind just as they start to show signs of giving you a harvest. You have put so much work into making your land and fields work properly and drain well that I hope you find the right buyer who is going to look after all your hard work. I hope you get the location you want and continue to produce videos of the same high standard as we have become accustomed to.

    Once the fuel systems are treated, its most helpful to run the engines or drain the fuel out of carbs.

    Anne, the best thing to do on small engines like chain saw and the like is to start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to warm up then simply drain the tank and restart the engine and let it run until it stops by itself using all the gas in the carb and lines. Add Sabil to the gas can like you say. I have been doing this for years. Add your gas in the Spring, prime a little and she starts right up

      Michael Ford any worry of seals being dried out from running it dry and letting it sit?

    • @TeamProsperity
      @TeamProsperity 4 года назад

      Well I don’t think so. I’ve never had any issues of seals drying out. I did a little research and you seem to be right. It’s not a good idea to run it dry. A senior engineer says it could damage the engine so I’ll agree with Anne to add stabilizer so I’ll do that this year, thanks 😊

    • @TheInvisibleOne1026
      @TheInvisibleOne1026 4 года назад

      Michael Ford stabilizer is ok, but problem I see common is people add to much and it turns to gel in the carburetor, then I have to tear the carb apart. Just an fyi for anyone that cares. Nice talking with you Mike.

Fixing the soil makes much more pest and disease resistant trees.

      Stan Ervin when I sold my first house (with greenhouse) people thought I was crazy because I was still planting and tending things in the greenhouse as the sale was proceeding. It was bittersweet, knowing that I wouldn’t benefit from the work, but it served two purposes for me. A.) it was like therapy during the craziest up-rooting time in my life, to get away from the chaos of packing up our lives inside and be in tune with the rhythms of nature & getting my hands dirty. And b.) it was a kindness to the people who were buying my home because once they moved it it was going to be past the planting season and if I hadn’t planted a few things for them they would have had to wait another year to utilize that space the way we built it to be used.
      Sorry for the lengthy answer (in addition to Anne’s) but I hope it adds to the understanding of why.
