Also it's implied that at the end of the musical they are back on the ride to keep circling around on it, showing how their deaths really are a never ending carnival
I think Noel didn't want a happy life, he just wanted to feel something. Although this doesn't sound appeasing to most people, it does to Noel because he's been apathetic about his whole boring life, so he'd rather have a tragic life than a lifeless one. EDIT- this was not supposed to be relatable

An interesting thing I find about this song is it always reiterates how Monique was alone. She didn’t have anyone. She died alone as well. The root meaning of the name Monique is “alone”. Either that’s one hell of a coincidence or a genius move and I think it’s the latter-
Not fully correct for the name. The root origin is unknown, but it is connected with monos in Greek meaning alone, though it most likely does not come from Greek because of where St. Monica lived (Carthage and Numidia). I do hope the name choice was intentional though since it does fit really well.
@@Simmer12341Yeah, Monique's surname, Gibeau, is the name of a Canadian fast food place called the "Gibeau Orange Julep" Which is ironic when you realize that he worked at, and hated, a fast food place.

Kholby Wardell is amazing. Period. I feel fortunate to have seen him in the original production all those many years ago when this was just a Fringe Festival entry...
Every time it gets to the part about Claude the pimp I think about my friend Claude who's actually the one who got me into Ride the Cyclone in the first place
For anyone wondering what the background vocals are saying at 4:35, it repeats: “Broken heart, a flask of gin, tattooed with a safety pin, teeth all stained with nicotine, running nylons, shattered dreams, Super crusty, holy terror, wild eyes and black mascara”
Its literally Upbeat but ends depressed(Fall fair and Uranium) Upbeat!(What the world needs) Depressed(Noel's Lament) Upbeat!(This song is awesome) Depressed(Talia) Horny(YK) Depressed(Jane Doe) Upbeat(sugar cloud) Depressed but also upbeat?(It's not a game/It's just a ride)

Hey!
I kind of interpret that this song is about how he dreamed of being the center of attention in the sense of being desired, even (what he feels) is the most negative way possible. He said the line about how he’s the only gay kid and I think it’s implied he didn’t really have any friends for that on top of him being eccentric yk?
I think it could also be something like “Tragedy over apathy.” He works a boring job he hates, he doesn’t have people to talk to or spend time with. He is alone. Pain, emotional or physical, become more appealing than nothing at all. eg. using the pain of cigarette burns to prove he’s still alive, “I’d rather burn out than fade away.” go out painfully than submit to an apathetic void. I think tragedy over apathy also supports wanting to be paid attention to, for people to interact with him, even if in a negative way, just for some sort of human interaction, for his pain to feel real.
I personally thinks it touches on many things that adds a lot of depth to his character. I have heard theories about this song is also about Noel's internalised homophobia that he experienced along with the majority of things you guys mentioned and, honestly, I agree with that theory, which sort of states that he feels as though he feels he would only experience the kind of love he longed for if he were in the place of a woman as even a 'fucked up girl' is more desired than he is to another man as we've seen in many of the movies Noel seems to adore. I do believe that the complex nature of Noel's character is really overlooked by the fandom in all honesty as this song has so many layers and can be interpreted in so many ways that it doesn't just have one meaning to it, which is something I think this show does so well. The songs are as well structured and well rounded as though they were their own character and I don't think I've heard a musical that has ever successfully done that like 'Ride The Cyclone.'
I listened to this using some half-broken earphones and I could only hear the instruments well and the person who was singing sounded like they were in a cave it was such a fucking cool experience I am actually glad
somebody said noel would've loved will wood and now i can't stop expecting him to say "POPS PLACEBOS FOR LIBIDOS SCREAMING BLESS THE TORPEDOS" over the "SUPER CRUSTY HOLY TERROR WILD EYES BLACK MARCARA" part instead of his vocal riff
I know absolutely nothing about this musical and this is the only song that I have heard from it, but I want to inject this song straight into my veins and go ham
I love it, I watched the performance at Arena Stage Theatre and at 2:47 (in this song specifically) it looks like it ends, and everyone started to clap- the acTOR THO LEGIT DID A " ☝🤨 Wait wait we're not done yet hold on there's more ✋🤨" It was never said, but the expression and hand signals said everything he needed to convey.
Broken heart, a flask of gin Tattooed with a safety pin Teeth all stained with nicotine Running nylons, shattered dreams Super crusty, holy terror Wild eyes and black mascara Broken heart, a flask of gin Tattooed with a safety pin Teeth all stained with nicotine Running nylons, shattered dreams Super crusty, holy terror Wild eyes and black mascara
my college is doing ride the cyclone rn, and this song was SO fun to do during callbacks. didn’t end up getting the role, but still a 10/10 experience, would recommend
The fact it said specifically _CHARCOAL_ rather than coal is most likely a detail put there on purpose. Charcoal is the result of burning wood. Coal is natural. If it said coal, it would mean a naturally emotionless/hard shelled person that burns brightly when hit with fire. Charcoal would mean someone who was open and social and most likely got their heart broken or ‘burned’ and made it charcoal. To add to this some more, charcoal also burns well until it becomes ash, so it means that said person can still love, but if burnt again it’s all over.
I clicked on this out of curiosity and when it started up I was like oh nice it's gonna be set in like 1920s or something the I get hit with "I worked at taco Bell" 😂
same, when i first heard it it was without the beginning part explaining, so i assumed all the stuff he talks about was actually happening and not just a fantasy, and let's just say i did not expect the plot of this musical to be about a bunch of kids dying on a rollercoaster lmao
I feel like the final minute is just him pleading to live. That if he could do it again he would live a life of sorrow and indulge in the lows of life. That he would rather live a life of sadness and adventure then comfortably and stability. He overall rather burn out then be dead. He’s arguing he should get to live because he never got too.
In that part where the man asks "do u have any final words to the lord you'd like to say" their answer is golden. those are going to be my final words when I die! "Tell him that like him I choose to BURN OUT rather than fade away~" it's beautiful!
Ok why is no one talking about the part where Noel says “Oui. Tell Him that, like Him, I choose to burn out rather than fade away!” Like yeeeeeesssss I live for it😍😍😍😍
tip for everybody who wants to sing this but feel like they can't - sing this whenever you're alone. I'm not much of a singer but I love this song to the point I sing it in the shower and when I get home from work and today, I managed to finally match the ending riff note for note. Not very well, mind you! But the elation I felt after hitting those notes? I'm gonna keep chasing that and improving

Whenever I listen to this song, I feel like my brain is picturing an actress, who slowly becomes her role: A serial killer, who was becoming more and more insane each time she played said role, until it consumed her mind. Becoming more and more brutal with each kill she does, but never leaving any evidence behind to trace her back to the crime. What was once a young actress, a woman who had become her role and going each night to find new victims to live for the thrill she gains each time.

For anyone wondering what the background vocals are saying at 4:35, it repeats:
“Broken heart, a flask of gin,
tattooed with a safety pin,
teeth all stained with nicotine, running nylons, shattered dreams,
Super crusty, holy terror,
wild eyes and black mascara”
I literally practiced so much just to say those lines really fast and I finally mastered it 😭

Lyrics:
In my life, I was Noel Gruber who worked at Taco Bell in Uranium City, Saskatchewan
But, in my dreams, I played a different role
I was Monique Gibeau in post-war France
A hooker with a heart of black charcoal
I write poems to burn by firelight
Drink champagne and guzzle gin
Good girls call me "the town bicycle"
Don't knock it 'til you've tried my life of sin
Oh, Claude, my pimp, knows never mess with me
Last prick did that faded quick to black
I have no idea where to find him, officers
But if you do, please mention that I'd like to have returned
The pretty knife
That I stuck ten times in his back
For I sing songs until the break of dawn
I embrace a new man every night
My life's one never-ending carnival
A world of boozy-floozy flashing light
I want to be that fucked-up girl
He said, "I think I am in love with you"
I've heard that lie a million times before
Oh, tonight I give in to the fantasy
Take love when you can, when you're a whore
For I sing songs until the break of dawn
I embrace a new man every night
My life's one never-ending carnival
A world of boozy-floozy flashing light
I want to be that fucked-up girl
So now I sell my love for opium
In some rat-infested Chinese dive
At night I burn myself with cigarettes
Just to somehow prove I'm still alive
Eight months later, I catch typhoid flu
Kicked out, I see the ugly light of day
Dying in an alley, a priest kneels down to me
"My child, do you have any final words to the Lord you'd like to say?"
"Oui. Tell him that, like him, I choose to burn out rather than fade away"
For I sing songs until the break of dawn
I embrace a new man every night
My life's one never-ending carnival
A world of boozy-floozy flashing light
For I sing songs until the break of dawn
I embrace a new man every night
My life's one never ending carnival
A world of boozy-floozy flashing light
I want to be that fucked-up girl
I wanna be that fucked-up (girl)

This voice sounds just right to my ears. The way the "ah" sounds are pronounced and the "i" sounds, like song and dawn, and alive, etc. So satisfying.

Noel jumpscare
😂
The various references in this song make me laugh every time because this song is so good and NOEL PLEASE
I listened to this using some half-broken earphones and I could only hear the instruments well and the person who was singing sounded like they were in a cave it was such a fucking cool experience I am actually glad

Its so nice to finally hear the songs I love so much in an official cast recording
To add to this some more, charcoal also burns well until it becomes ash, so it means that said person can still love, but if burnt again it’s all over.
it’s probably because they needed the extra syllable
This is the song. This is MY song.

I clicked on this out of curiosity and when it started up I was like oh nice it's gonna be set in like 1920s or something the I get hit with "I worked at taco Bell" 😂
did u still enjoy this song tho
same, when i first heard it it was without the beginning part explaining, so i assumed all the stuff he talks about was actually happening and not just a fantasy, and let's just say i did not expect the plot of this musical to be about a bunch of kids dying on a rollercoaster lmao
"Tell him that like him I choose to BURN OUT rather than fade away~"
it's beautiful!

tip for everybody who wants to sing this but feel like they can't - sing this whenever you're alone.
