Dont forget nintendo online emulation has cause switchs to start over heating, the button mapping is bad, the emulation is almost 20 years behind what other n64 emulations have done, the n64 on switch lacks texture filtering / anti aliasing , and has other issues like no save pack emulation , the audio engine is bugged , 2d sprites look blurry, and the issues go one XD
@ I know, I can't believe Nintendo didn't optimize the service better. They should at least give out a tweet about future updates to the service. Nintendo is known for good quality control in their games, but they keep tripping when it comes to online.

@@CristianLopez-xi4rt Did you notice if you have the nes, snes, and n64 emulators from the eshop installed. Your switch starts over heating . Besides that and Nintendo price jumping each nes- snes game from $0.20-$0.50 which is there valued digital price. Here's what Nintendo doesn't tell you 31/50 snes games are not good or what people wanted , 51/74 nes games are awful / not what people wanted , 18/74 nes games are blatent rom easy hacks called sp . Meaning the games people wanted are very small. An based on the price I gave you. The nintendo online would be $20-21 which seems to fit nintendo's pricing . However the N64 games value around $0.70-1.20 per game. An the Sega classics based on the steam sega collection for $28.49 each rom is worth $0.0568 per game . So, in no way is the nintendo online price correctly. An the emulators nintendo has serious issues hardware wise that can damage switch systems . So, the money there asking for is just not worth the content or system damages from poor optimization as you said . An yeah I spent time getting a rough estimation of the roms price based on nintendo's past eshops vs the devalued game prices over time . If you look at retro indie games. A snes- gb game can charge around $0.50-3.00 depending on the sprites made and how long it is. So, the pricing I gave for each rom should be pretty accurate .
For those defending the service: Yes, the bugs and lag and host of other graphical issues may be “minor”, and $50 a year may be cheap, but considering most of these are all first party Nintendo games that they have the source code for, they need to run as good or better than emulators found online created by some guy in his basement. If you’re gonna charge money, then the games should run PROPERLY, not just PASSABLE.

In fact a hacked switch running RetroArch is way more accurate with 3 point texture support and proper distance fog support.
@@lulzingrofl Nintendo didn't have 15 years to make one. Even with documentation, it would still take quite a long time. They also moved from game-specific emulators, which were used for the Gamecube and Wii, to an all-around emulator. This means that theoretically they could dump eveey n64 game on it and they should all run about the same. Admitedly, this conflicts with their claim that they work on each hame individually and that's why they are released the way they are. Nintendo also hasn't had years of bug fixing and tweaking with this emulator. Thry have other priorities. Looks like Nintendo's jealousy is starting to show lol. They cant emulate their own shit properely so they take out their anger on rom sites because they are scared to admit that the community can do alot more in less time than Nintendo can do in years to come.
@@toonzelda3353 Actually, it's all about money. Minimum effort for maximum profit. Classic cash grab tactic because they know there are so many people who have nostalgic memories of their old games and willing to shell out their hard earned cash just to play it on modern consoles. Nintendo could pay programmers to make the games decently and in timely manner but they rather just half ass it with bare minimum and sell the product as soon as possible. Gotta love corporate capitalism.
Digital Foundry & Modern Vintage Gamer have explained this before. the reason Nintendo 64 emulation is so garbage now is because since the Wii U era, Nintendo has been using a 'one size fits all' approach to N64 emulation, where prior to that on the Wii, the emulators were more akin to Xbox backward compatibility where each game has its own version of the emulator running with its own unique settings specific to each game.
Ocarina of Time deserves a full blown remaster that brings it up to modern graphics at least I want to see it. I have seen those Unreal Engine samples and I really want to play it using the Unreal Engine.
I appreciate a deeper look on what was the task at hand for Nintendo when they set out to make this service. All things considered, they still acted incompetently. If they wouldva succeded and made the service top notch this would just be the cherry on the top of their genius, now its just an excuse.
The controls on Super Mario 64 make me wanna cry. The jump (so weak) button should be B not A (in position of N64) the crouch button is SO sensitive i cant even do alot of the jumps.
i'm surprised one key element was left outside the whole review. what about the controls? is it fine on the default joycon? is it fine on the pro controller? is there even a configurator for the controls? or does nintendo "encourage" players to buy the additional controllers?
I’m not excited at all to be honest. Unless they remaster and give these titles a whole new skin I could care less. Even for ZOT it looked that good on the 3DS….
Lol 3ds emulation took a long time to get working right. You actually think nintendo will give two shits about that? That would require an investment of capital and they dont need to do that because shills will buy anything they release

I'm not convinced the problem is down to the Switch being too weak. Didn't the Wii VC have better emulation than this? Aren't people with modded Swtiches already running emulators that perform better than this? The treatment of OoT in particular is inexcusable, did they not bug test it at all? it is immediately obvious that, for example, the Dark Link fight looks horrible.
It's not just the Dark Link fight room in the Water Temple that's been dissed, the Haunted Wasteland also got hit by graphical errors. the sandstorm is so thick you need to spam the song of storms just to see which way to go and get to the halfway point.
I'm glad you mention that most people won't notice these little issues. I'm one of them, despite owning an N64 back in the day. I haven't owned one or played these games in years, so missing fog and such don't bother me in the slightest. Loving OoT, MK, and Starfox just fine.
I honestly dont have issues at all, especially the fog missing doesn't bother me. And like he said the fog was definitely very hard to do,but the fog had to purpose to improve performance on the n64.
@@DeityLink69 Yep exactly. Fog was used in so many games back then because the hardware couldn't render draw distances well. Silent Hill artistically worked it into the story and gameplay, but the games on NSO look great with sharper visuals.

The greed only gets bigger while the quality tends to go down.
Apart from they weren’t even 720p on a Wii because the console physically wasn’t capable. So they will visually be a lot better on Switch. Only people complaining about fog can say otherwise, which 90% of the casual market won’t even notice.
Oh yeah no, I wasn't sarcastic. N64 games looks either bloated or diminish the original intended look on a higher resolution. Sure the low framerate sucks, but look-wise on a CRT? It just isn't the same on an HD TV/Monitor.
I feel like IGN got payed to try and save face for Nintendo. The excuse is oh the added resolution + the emulation... yeah my ass. The switch is supposed to be more powerful than the PlayStation 3/360. And both those consoles had remasters with improved textures and frame rates from more powerful consoles to emulate. Look at final fantasy x HD which is on the switch. You’re telling me Nintendo couldent do a similar job? No way.
Its shocking to see how incredibly low res the N64 versions look next to the Switch versions. The lmage is so much sharper. If only they fixed the input lag and allow us to map the buttons.
It’s then in turn shocking how good those lower resolutions look next to the Switch version when viewed on a crt with an s-video cable. Just take these visual comparisons here with a nice dose of salt.
@@Awnos Mapping within the application itself is what’s needed. If you remap at the system level, parts of the N64 mapping improve while others fall apart. Case in point being the ZR + (ABXY) shortcut for C-buttons, if you swap around any of the face buttons, the shortcut would be all messed up. It’s also the case that the N64 and each game’s mappings are so oddball that one system mapping would probably not satisfy all titles making for more tedium, confusion in moving it all around. With app level mapping, you could select your preference and then have it correctly display in the suspend menu when you need to properly remind yourself. This is a “premium” experience for decades old software that should be reflective of preservation, accessibility and/or improvement. Not a reflection of the minimum acceptability for play.
The fog very much was a limitation. It’s just MANY games were designed around that limitation in a very artistic manner. When you tear out the limitations without accounting for the artistic aspect of said game, you end up with another Silent Hill Remake, which was also ripped by critics for ignoring the artistic aspect of the game’s fog. It’s almost very much an identical situation where Disney made ALL the Simpson’s episodes widescreen without accounting for the fact those earlier episodes were designed around the fact they weren’t originally widescreen, and when Disney chopped off the tops and bottoms of those earlier episodes, MANY episodes lost visual jokes and gags that were tied to those sections of the screen.
@@Salomon_Andrade Fair comparison, I see your point I guess I'm just not that bothered by it because I have other ways to play the games it's just really convenient to have them on Switch too. Honestly if I really want to dig in to Ocarina again I'll play the 3ds version anyway.
Finally someone who discusses it at a hardware level and uses logic to see the reasons things have been done a certain way. It’s also nice to show people in America what us Europeans had to put up with for so long on PAL hardware. 😂 But overall, as I would have predicted, more than good enough for 90% of the consumer base. The online minority need to realise they’re not the majority I feel. So when gamecube running n64 emulation (2004-2008) is better than 2021 switch n64 emulation . When the switch has alot more power than a gamecube. Meanwhile, my computer a 2013 model running about the same specs as the switch is outputting better visual, effects, and a better fps performance (60 fps instead of 24 fps on the switch) with 128 mb ram vs the switch ram. The switch online n64 emulation is awful. The emulation also has a risk of causing your system to start over heating when not in use . Don't kid yourself. Great review. Unfortunately, I'd also included the fact that games crashed or even have not been totally polished to be playable on Switch. E.g Mario Kart 64 and ghosts or even the short release library. Those relevant aspects (not only the tecnicall ones) made this increase price laughable.
I dont think they are the worst emulation to man kind but they didn't give us any options. this video is really bad... you are wrong about resolution. it's 960x720. and the fog would not be taxing for the switch hardware. there is retroarch on any modded switch console and games like Mario 64 or ocarina of time run in 1080p 60fps 16:9 on them... with no missing fog, reflections, input lag etc. and even the option for enhanced textures and online multiplayer. it's on the same system so it's just nintendo that screwed up and has nothing to do with the limitations of the switch hardware. Even on wii vc the fog was rendered correctly.. 😅
@@NXGamer i can clearly see the borders. 1280x720p would be 16:9 but it's 4:3, so it's 960x720. Digital foundry and other tech sites came to the same conclusion.
@@HermesderWetterbote This is pixel density. The image being rendered with the borders is 1280x720 so aligns with a 4k screen. Ratio is 4:3 and unchanged.
@@NXGameryeah, okay, it's 1280x720p including the black borders xD But the emulation itself is not upscaling the borders. the game itself is still only displayed in 960x720 and then a black border of 320x720 is added on top to fill a 16:9 screen. increasing the horizontal resolution 4 times instead of 3 would not make the image wider.
@@HermesderWetterbote correct, I could have explained that cleaner listening back. Simply the screen is still to 16:9 ratio as a frame buffer, just the game itself is 3x on each axis but 4x on width to keep pixel parity to source and target (screen).

Nintendo has to realize this service is competing with massive backlogs of new games, as well as other streaming services. In that context, only giving the option for a year-long subscription is so egregious, especially when the starting offer is only 9 N64 games.

I'm a Mario 64 1 Star Speedrunner as well, the internet is ganging up on this and I honestly find it ridiculous. yes, it's worse than the wii u now. But you realize the wii u emulator was updated several times right? the wii u emulator is far superior now compared to when it released and also isn't as bad as it used to be. Most people who are mad about this service weren't going to get it in the first place anyways. I'm happy to be able to lie down on my couch, power up my console with a wireless controller and play Mario Kart 64 with people from a different state. In which I don't experience the lagg issues because I don't play with people from Europe.
Do I think Nintendo should improve the service, yes. Sure! they definitely should. But everyone is treating $50 a year like it's the most expensive thing in the world. when $4 a month is cheaper than anything else out there. $4 a month and people are all complaining. go get a job you lazy pricks. thats nothing. You all realize an n64 is $200 right now and the games sell for $50 to $120 right now on ebay or at pawn shops right? You guys realize that in 1994 games were being sold for $50 when they were new. RIGHT?
this service isn't perfect. But there are no other services that allow you to easily invite friends to a game on the n64. Netplay is trash, and to say its better than the n64 online service is a lie. that thing is an absolute mess.
I'll take 60ms extra delay with online support and a continuous library of games with a wireless controller connected to my TV. over emulation with a bunch of strangers on the internet who are hacking the game, complete console inconsistencies from the people you are playing with and a setup to use it every single time.
tldr; you are all complaining about literally nothing. What nintendo is offering at the price falls face flat compared to the other consoles. I think the biggest issue people have with this emulator is the fact that nintendo has at a point made a emulator that was better than this.
weren't CRT tv's 480p?.... the right image looks a bit too blurry I think.... I don't recall the game looking THAT blurry....

Im a Nintendo fan, but ngl, paying for a shitty emulator with bugs and unstable when you can get one for free with a computer a internet connection is just..... stupid
I would pay for it if the emulator runned well and/or even better than a normal emulator.
Could they not just put the 3DS version on instead minus the 3D function ?
They could have, but that requires a lot of effort. NSO emulates the original N64 games; while the 3DS remakes were full ports, meaning they were re-created for that specific hardware.
@@wilfredynunez5263 ahhhh I see!
@@wilfredynunez5263 But they wouldn't be re-creating anything. Ocarina has already been remade for the 3DS, so they all would have to do is port that over to Switch, not fully remake it. I'd expect a company with the resources of Nintendo's to be able to accomplish that, regardless of how much "effort" it would take.
@@RalphNaderInc You're expecting too much from Nintendo lol, they do have the ability to do so, but it's a matter of they want to. Porting from 3DS to Switch still means re writing the code, and also creating higher resolution models because the 3DS screen was 240p and the Switch 720p. It's Obviously not impossible, but it's not just as simple as pressing a button and all the work will all magically be done.

Great review. Unfortunately, I'd also included the fact that games crashed or even have not been totally polished to be playable on Switch. E.g Mario Kart 64 and ghosts or even the short release library. Those relevant aspects (not only the tecnicall ones) made this increase price laughable.
None of the games crash lol
Crash? What? They never crashed. Also, the ghost thing was also a problem on the Wii U and Wii, maybe there's a deeper reason on why it dosen't work.
@@ricln5464 it’s because they have the rumble feature added, as well as Nintendo being lazy and wanting us to depend on save states for that

Its a ok emulator, but its a shitty deal for 50 dllrs
If game fun and works that's all that matters
But the fact we had better emulation in the wii era just doesn't sit well with me.
But it doesn't work?
I dont think they are the worst emulation to man kind but they didn't give us any options. Options to buy games, map controls, scanlines, 4:3 stretch etc. They add this people will gladly pay the 50 a year. I did see some screen tear and some lag here and there plus the fog was removed for some odd reason. Like I said maybe give us the option how much fog we get? Nintendo dropped the ball on this however if you can get used of the controls (since you can't map it) then its not that bad overall 6 outta 10 should've been a slam dunk by Nintendo. Someone get MVG to Nintendo!!!
Thanks for the deeper analysis, I don't think people typically understand how much effort all of this takes and how hard it is to achieve. They can still improve the emulator, it's not set in stone. For my personal tastes, it's overall pretty good, the games look the best I've ever seen them on an HD TV, event better than upscaling from the 64 which makes these games easier for me to play today. I hope they continue to improve it but I'm having a good time.

Oof Nintendo 64 emulation has been basically flawless for like over 10 years now and Nintendo can't even emulate their own system
Wonder why he didn’t deep dive into all the bugs that have been reported???
Regardless, it's shocking that we have ANY extra latency on these titles.
Not really. When you take wireless controls and control conversion into account there’ll always be latency/lag in emulation because the original games were never written to understand them.

this video is really bad... you are wrong about resolution. it's 960x720. and the fog would not be taxing for the switch hardware. there is retroarch on any modded switch console and games like Mario 64 or ocarina of time run in 1080p 60fps 16:9 on them... with no missing fog, reflections, input lag etc. and even the option for enhanced textures and online multiplayer. it's on the same system so it's just nintendo that screwed up and has nothing to do with the limitations of the switch hardware. Even on wii vc the fog was rendered correctly.. 😅
No it is not, resolution is correct.
